I'm JoAnne Lenart-Weary and for over 40 years, I have had the

pleasure of creating beautiful rooms in

29 states and 4 countries. In 1999, I

founded The Decorating and Staging

Academy, which has trained thousands

of new, aspiring, and established

decorating and staging professionals.

Although I am no longer the Director of

The-DSA, I continue to play an active role.

Color is not only the most important aspect of a room but also

where most mistakes are made. Whether it is paint, textiles, art or

other, you need a group of colors that play well together to

maximize visual and emotional appeal. Also, remember those power or aspiration words you jotted down?

Saturation is the element of color that impacts emotion. Notice

how the 4 palettes below feel equal with the rest of their group or

complete one another.

Now imagine if you took a color from Palette A and placed it with

Palette D. Can you see how they would compete with one another?

The brighter colors would command the attention.

Take a moment and decide which palette would feel most

appealing to you. Think about those power words again, do they

seem to suit the palette you selected?

In my over 40 years as a decorating and staging

professional, I knew I hit it out of the ballpark, when my

client said, "I never would have thought of that.” Think the same way for your own home. How can you add

a twist to what you use or do to give your space a special

look and not a "Rooms to Go" look?

Simple ideas might include: 1. Pay special attention to the fifth wall of the room, the

ceiling. Paint it a dark color or wallpaper for instant style. 2. Cut foam core to size for the back of your bookcase.

Paint or cover with fabric for a great backdrop and interest. 3. Update old furniture by stapling the skirt up and

expose the leg. 4.Customize a lampshade with fabric for a unique touch

5.Use furniture in unexpected ways, the antique dresser

as a sofa table or the dining table cut down to coffee

table height.

room needs

most is YOU!!


I learned a long time ago...it's not about me. It is about the people

who live in the house. Use your home in the way that best suits your

personal lifestyle. Let it reflect who you are and what you love. Your

decorating style can help visitors gain insight and those that matter

most to you. A few ways to show your personality are: 1. Create a family gallery wall. In a world where every moment

involves technology, we sometimes need to be reminded of who

matters. A family wall of happy memories and other generations can

add interest and tell your story. Select some favorites to have

printed and framed. Use the same frame and mat color for a more

on-trend look. Keep your center line at about 54” from the floor and

the photos about 4-6” apart, vertically and horizontally. 2. Gather collections. Unless it is Beanie Babies, most things you

have collected over the years deserve some attention and a place of

honor. Make sure it doesn't become a museum but a lovely room

showcasing things that tell your story. 3. The best rooms are ones that look evolved so tell your family story

by gathering from the generations. Showcase Grandma's old quilt or

chair with your children's art, framed and hung.
