MakingacallPressandholdthePTTbuttononthesideofthehandheldmictotransmit.Whiletransmitting,speakapproximately3-5cm(1-2inches)fromthemicrophone.WhenyoureleasethePTTyourtransceiverwillgobacktoitsreceivemode.
ChannelselectionTherearetwomodesofoperation:Frequency(VFO)mode,andChannelorMemory(MR)mode.Foreverydayuse,Channel(MR)modeisgoingtobeawholelotmorepracticalthanFrequency(VFO)mode.However,Frequency(VFO)modeisveryhandyforexperimentationoutinthefield.Frequency(VFO)modeisalsousedforprogrammingchannelsintomemory.FordetailsonhowtoprogramyourtransceiverseeChapter4,Programming.Ultimatelywhichmodeyouendupusingwilldependentirelyonyourusecase.

Youcanalsoinputfrequenciesdirectlyonyournumerickeypadwithkilohertzaccuracy.However,theradiowillfloortothenearestfrequencythatcorrespondstoyourfrequencystep,inotherwords,whenyouinputfrequencieswithgreaterthan1kHzresolution(suchas145.6875MHzintheexamplebelow),alwaysroundyourinputup.
Justbecauseyoucanprograminachanneldoesnotmeanyou'reautomaticallyauthorizedtousethatfrequency.Transmittingonfrequenciesyou'renotauthorizedtooperateonisillegal,andinmostjurisdictionsaseriousoffence.Ifyougetcaughttransmittingwithoutalicenseyoucanandwillgetfined,andinworstcasesenttojail.However,itislegalinmostjurisdictionstolisten.Contactyourlocalregulatorybodyforfurtherinformationonwhatlaws,rulesandregulationsapplytoyourarea.

MonitorBothVFO&MRModesYoucantogglefromVFOandMR(MemoryRecall)modebyeitherpressingtheV/Mbuttononthefrontofyourradio,oryoucantogglemodesfromtheHandheldMicbyalongpressofthe‘Menu’button.TheVFO/MRmodewillonlytoggleonthecurrentselectedA/B/C/Dline–whiletheotherchannellineswillremainonchannelormemorymodeastheywereselected.Thisallowsyoutomonitorchannelandfrequencymodesimultaneously
