As you go through the reading complete the table
What is the pH range
KEY VOCABULARY
AcidA material that acts as if it were the opposite of a base in a reaction. Acids taste sour and are usually very corrosive (destructive to metal or flesh). A strong acid has a pH below 1 on the pH scale.
BaseA substance that acts in an opposite way to an acid in a reaction. Bases taste bitter and are usually corrosive. Bases have a pH higher than 7.
ConcentratedA high amount of solute per unit of solution, undiluted.
CorrosiveA substance that may dissolve metals, ruin clothing, or burn skin. Strong acids and bases are corrosive.
DiluteTo add more solvent to a solution so that there is proportionally more solvent than solute present than before.
Copy Key Vocabulary into your science notebook
IndicatorA substance that can be used to demonstrate whether or not another substance is present. For example, pH paper.
NeutralA solution that has a pH of 7. It is neither an acid or a base.
pH A way of describing the acidic or basic strength of a solution. The pH value of a solution is a number on a scale from 0 to 14.
pH scaleA scale that measures the pH (how much acid or how much base) of a solution.
Solute The substance that is being dissolved when a solution is formed. For example, in a salt-in-water solution, the salt is the solute.
Solvent The liquid in which a substance is dissolved when a solution is formed. For example, water is the solvent in a salt in water solution.
