the
VirusThe United States has built a society where people have the freedom to live, workand make a prosperous life. This freedom depends on people obeying laws andrespecting the rights of others. People that do not respect the laws or the individualvalue of each person challenges our society and our freedoms. This challenge growsand spreads like a virus that gains strength as more and more people come intocontact with it. In order to fight the corrupting virus, some communities pass morelaws. Their goal is to punish lawbreakers and hopefully prevent others frombreaking the law. But many times we hear people, even good people, say, "Lawswere meant to be broken" or "If they don't catch me, what's the problem?" Theiractions, the choices they make, the laws they ignore speak louder than words.
The virus of corruption spreads several ways. We may go to school or work withpeople who have the virus and we come into direct contact with it. Sometimes we justsee people in the community or on the nightly news breaking laws and takingadvantage of innocent people - this indirect contact is still contagious and impactsmany people's lives. We may be infected and not even realize it. Perhaps we have notrecognized the early symptoms, or perhaps the virus has not shown itself yet. Someviruses, like HIV/AIDS can live in our body for many years before we become sick.
This book will help you find out if you have been infected with the virus ofcorruption. It will also help you discover the treatment and the anti-virus to protectyourself against further infection.
< 2 >
We are seeing a lack of respect for the law. The success of a
democracy depends on people obeying laws whether the police are
present or not. “WE” are the government.
We have lost our basic moral values and we do not have the same
understanding of what is right and wrong. Moral behavior is no longer
believed to be an absolute, (something that does not change).
Instead, we think morality depends on the situation or the
circumstances. When situations are difficult or emotional, we base
our actions on whatever is necessary to get ahead rather than
morality.
We are strongly influenced by our friends and social groups. Whether
we have one friend at school or two hundred, acceptance by other
people often motivates us to disobey parents, disrespect teachers
and violate morals.

Important Definitions:
virus
Webster states that a virus is a corrupting influence on morals or the intellect.
It is a type of poison, which is contagious.
ePidemic
A virus out of control becomes an epidemic. Many people within a society are
exposed to the virus of corruption. Those without protection become infected
and they will suffer the consequences as well as continue to spread it.
PrinciPles
A system of absolutes and norms that will shape one’s behavior. Principles
are absolutes developed within you to help you know, in your mind, what is
right. Principles get stronger in your life each time you follow them.
values
A system of beliefs we develop as we grow up. Our family and friends
influence what we beileve is important in life. All the things we value (a home,
car, family, etc ...) become part of our belief system.

a great civilization is not conquered from
without until it has destroyed itself from within.
~ ariel Durant
Each person only looks out for his/her own benefit and we do not
think of ourselves as part of a community or accept responsibilty
to protect our community.
Rights and freedom do not come without responsibilities. Every
time someone does something wrong to us, we defend ourselves,
but when dealing with our parents, teachers and classmates we
mock, ignore or disobey them. We are only interested in our own
rights and no one else’s.
We have become very self-centered and think everything should
revolve around us. If we cannot see how things directly affect our
lives, then we are not interested.
The main purpose of our relationships is self-serving - we want to
receive and not give. We think only in terms of getting our wants
and needs met with no concern for others.
We are a generation without vision and specific goals. We do not
weigh the consequences of our actions even when they bring pain
and suffering to others.
Impact of Leadership
< 5 >
n o T e s :
When people infected with the virus become leaders everyone
eventually suffers. Instead of being concerned with the needs
of the students or the community, leaders infected with the virus
are only concerned about themselves. They seek fame,
popularity and awards that look good on future applications.
The needs of the school or community go unmet and the
infected leader becomes a model that many follow.
Have you had the opportunity to be a leader?
What do you expect from others? And from yourself?
At school there are many opportunities for leaders to have a
good influence. These are just a few:
Help the students show respect towards each other
Focus attention on a social issue that affects the community.
Help create a sense of community within the student body.
Good leaders are principled in their behavior. This means they
have already decided to do what is right before they hear the
details of a situation. They have pure motives, and are not
concerned with fame, fortune or power. Good leaders want
what is right and they always think about the effect their actions
have on others. Good leaders become an anti-virus!
“use power to help people because we have been
given power, not to achieve our own goals or to show
ourselves to the world and obtain a famous name.
the only purpose for power is to serve the people.”

The virus of corruption is highly contagious. Many of us live in
the midst of an outbreak. If we do not intentionally choose to
live life with intergrity, the virus will not only infect us, but our

have you ever thought about what you would like to become?

if you were successful, what would your life be like?
It is not easy to accept challenges and it is not easy to maintain
what we achieve. In order to achieve something good, there is
always a cost.
Many times we neglect things that we should do because we are busy
doing other things that do not bring good results in our life. In order to
achieve your goals you must take advantage of the resources
available to you and not allow obstacles to get in the way. Take a
moment to list some obstacles that are preventing you from reaching
your goals:
Successful people think and act according to principles
everyone can learn. The way you think determines how
successful you will be!
How it works:
Our thoughts reflect our attitude and we adopt those attitudes when
facing life’s situations. When situations come up, good or bad, we act
out those attitudes. If we repeat our actions, our actions become
habits that lead us to results showing our success or failure.
Success depends on your thoughts!

mentor of ambition
thomas alVa edison
(February 11th, 1847 – October 18th, 1931) was an American Inventor and
businessman who developed many devices that greatly influenced life around the
world, including the phonograph and a long lasting light bulb. Dubbed "The Wizard
of Menlo Park" by a newspaper reporter, he was one of the first inventors to apply
the principles of mass production to the process of invention, and therefore is often
credited with the creation of the first industrial research laboratory.
Edison is considered one of the most prolific inventors in history, holding 1,093
U.S. patents in his name, as well as many patents in the United Kingdom, France
and Germany.
Along with his successes he had many failures. He only went to school three
months, his teacher called him “addled.” His inventions and ideas did not always
work out either. The idea of building with cement, putting sound into motion
pictures and coming up with a practical way to mine iron ore were just a few of
these failures. Even the light bulb took him over thirteen months of failure to
achieve success.
“everything comes to him who hustles while he waits.”
“i have not failed. i've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.”
“our greatest weakness lies in giving up. the most certain way to succeed is
always to try just one more time.”
thomas a. edison
Thomas Edison was an incredible inventor that literally gave us light. He failed,
failed and failed again. Only his ambition to succeed carried him through all his
failures. As you can see in his quotes above he was a man of determination and
for that he is our hero of ambition.
< 16 >
1“A wise youth seizes the day,
but what a shame to see a
young person who sleeps away
his hour of opportunity.”
Ambition
< 17 >
An obvious character trait of a successful person is their endless ambition.
They are usually known as hard workers, always concerned about getting
things done. Ambition helps them see many opportunities that less ambitious
people miss. They know life may not always go their way, but they always take
advantage of opportunities that come up.
Ambition and greed are not the same thing. Ambition is a desire to be
productive creating a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction when the
work is done. Greed is a desire for personal gain with no concern for the
impact of your actions on the welfare of others.
Ambitious people start their day with a good attitude and think, “It is a good
day and I will make it a productive one.” They do not procrastinate.
There are three ways to develop ambition:
1. Look for opportunities to bring solutions to situations or to meet a need within
your family and friends. Once you find an opportunity, act on it.
2. Consider your skills and interests. As you develop your strengths, you will be
empowered to make a positive impact.
3. Make a plan for what you want to accomplish. As you work your plan, keep
your finished results in mind. Visualize how you will feel when you have met
your goal. This will increase your motivation to keep going.
Facts about Ambition•Opportunities do not necessarily come to us, the diligent person creates
them.
• Opportunities follow the hard working, ambitious and responsible people that
have positive attitudes.
• Ambition does not come from just desiring great things; it is produced when
we have a vision and a purpose.
“a Wise youth seizes the day, but What a
shame to see a young Person Who sleePs
aWay his hour of oPPortunity.”
Ambition

< 19 >
• In sports, you hear, “The ball didn’t bounce my way.” Ambitious people go
after the ball and make sure the ball comes their way. They create
opportunities by pursuing the ball. Some may claim they are lucky, but
ambitious people do not believe in luck. They only believe in preparation and
opportunity.
Benefits Ambitious people are known by the following characteristics:
• Their positive way of thinking and diligence. This will helps them discover new
opportunities. In order to take advantage of their opportunities they have
made the decision to:
-Plan their work.
-Use time wisely.
-Re-evaluate their performance and their goals on a regular
basis.
-They get a lot done.
• They increase their skills with each successful project.
• They know the truth of the old saying, “If it’s important, we will find the time!”
• They set goals because they see opportunities. They do the work because
they see the need. They plan because they know without a guideline, nothing
will get done.
Steps to Follow 1. Keep yourself motivated by pursuing your dreams and setting goals that
measure your achievements. If you do this, you will find more opportunities
along the way.
2. Go after the ball in the game of life and make opportunities come your way.
3. Be the person that people want to ask to get things done because you are
successful and productive.

mentor of responsibility
abraham lincolnAbraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809 in a small town in Kentucky. He
was the sixteenth president of the United States, serving from March 4, 1861 until his
assassination on April 15, 1865. As an outspoken opponent of the expansion of slavery in
the United States, Lincoln won the Republican Party nomination in 1860 and was elected
president later that year. During his term, he helped preserve the United States by leading
the defeat of the Secessionist Confederate States of America in the Civil War. He
introduced measures that resulted in the abolition of slavery, issuing his Emancipation
Proclamation in 1863 and promoting the passage of the thirteenth amendment to the
Constitution in 1865.
Historians have concluded that he handled the factions of the Republican Party
responsibly, bringing leaders of each faction into his cabinet and forcing them to cooperate.
Lincoln successfully defused a war scare with the United Kingdom in 1861. Additionally, he
managed his own re-election in the 1864 presidential elections.
Opponents of the war (also known as “Copperheads”) criticized him for refusing to
compromise on the slavery issue. Conversely, the Radical Republicans, an abolitionist
faction of the Republican Party, also criticized him for moving too slowly in abolishing
slavery. Even with these roadblocks, Lincoln successfully rallied the public opinion through
his rhetoric and speeches.
He failed as a businessman - a storekeeper.
He failed as a farmer - he despised this work.
He failed in his first attempt to obtain political office.
Abraham Lincoln had his successes, but he had many more failures. It was his responsible
attitude during these failures that led him to become one of the greatest historical figures
the world has ever seen.
"leave nothing for tomorrow which can be done today."
abraham lincoln
If Abraham Lincoln irresponsibly had given up or quit, our country would be much different
today. He led America through one of the darkest times she has ever seen and for that he
is our hero of responsibility.

Responsibility
< 23>
The ability to think and the freedom to choose our behavior
is what makes a person independent and capable to be
responsible for their actions. To be responsible means that
you accept the consequences, good or bad, for your
thoughts as well as your actions. A responsible person is one
you can trust. Responsible people are hard to find, but when
you find them you can that see their motivation is different
compared to the rest of the world.
A responsible person wants others to trust in them. They are
willing to prove themselves dependable and stand firm in what
they know is right. They know if they do not follow through on what
they promised, others will be disappointed. Standing behind their
word is more important than personal gain, popularity and
sometimes friendships.
Responsibility motivates us to use our talents and skills to achieve
a better life. For example, a millionaire could kick back and have
a life of leisure with friends and family, but instead he keeps
pressing on to make a difference in life. He does not quit once he
makes millions, he keeps looking for ways to achieve. Some
people may think he is motivated by greed, but it is possible he
simply enjoys the thrill that comes with each success and finding
success where others have failed.
it is easy to dodge our resPonsibilities, but We
cannot avoid the consequences for dodging our
resPonsibilities.

Responsibility
< 24 >
n o T e s :
BenefitsOthers will identify you as a person of value.
You enjoy doing what is right even when you do not have to do it.
You will gain trust of others because you are dependable. You cannot
ask people to automatically trust you. you earn trust gradually as you
fulfill your commitments. Solid relationships can only be built with
people who are trustworthy.
Ways to show Responsibility:
1. Give your best effort.
2. Do what is right because it is right, not for personal gain.
3. Do not make excuses when you fail to meet expectations and never
blame someone else for your mistakes.
4. Study, learn and grow as a person to be the best person you can be.
5. Plan ahead, be prepared for things that might go wrong or come up
unexpectedly.
6. Once you commit to a project, see it through to the end.
Responsible people frequently go beyond what is asked of them.
They enjoy the rewards and achievements for their responsibility.
They avoid getting involved with what is wrong and destructive.
Responsible people do not struggle with making bad choices
because they are disciplined in choosing what is right.
Responsible people are careful with choosing friends to hang
around with. Keep in mind, people with bad character may
corrupt your good character. Be smart!
Steps to follow:1. Take control over your own life. Be responsible for your character.
2. Become a person that people can trust.
3. Be a solution to problems.
4. Be disciplined. Take care of your health, your time and your money.
5. Be rational. Do not react out of anger or fear.
< 25 >
n o T e s :
Reflect and Respond
Think of a time when you demonstrated responsibility.
Describe the situation and how you felt afterwards.1.
RememberRemember
thoughts become actions. actions become
habits. habit becomes our destiny.
6. Be a good example for your friends and community.
7. Always base your thinking and actions on good ethics and
principles.
Responsibility is one of the most important characteristics in a
person. It is not about how educated you are or how much money
you have in the bank. If you want to succeed in your life, you
must be responsible.
< 26 >
n o T e s :
With a partner, write down six situations that fit into one of the
two categories: Accepting Responsibility (or) Not Accepting
Responsibility. Have your classmates decide which category
most accurately fits the situation.
Here are two examples:
1. You leave young siblings home alone while you go to a
party with friends.
2. Your mother told to empty the trash but a friend drops by
and wants you to go to the mall. You don't want to miss
out on a fun afternoon, so you leave without emptying the
trash figuring it will be there when you return.
3.
4.
5.
6.
Accepting Responsibility Not Accepting Responsibility
For each situation that you put in the Not Accepting
Responsibility category, find a way to change the behavior to
meet the description of the principle of Responsibility.

mentor of attitude
albert einstein
(March 14th, 1879 – April 18, 1955) was a German-born physicist. He is best
known for his theory of relativity and specifically mass energy equivalence, E = mc2.
Einstein received the 1921 Nobel Prize in physics "for his services to Theoretical
Physics, and especially for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect."
Einstein's many contributions to physics include his special theory of relativity, which
reconciled mechanics with electromagnetism, and his general theory of relativity,
which extended the principle of relativity to non-uniform motion, creating a new
theory of gravitation. His other contributions include relativistic cosmology, capillary
actions, critical opalescence, classical problems of statistical mechanics and their
application to quantum theory, an explanation of the Brownian movement of
molecules, atomic transition probabilities, the quantum theory of a monatomic gas,
thermal properties of light with low radiation density (which laid the foundation for
the photon theory), a theory of radiation including stimulated emission, the
conception of a unified field theory, and the geometrization of physics.
Works by Albert Einstein include more than fifty scientific papers and also non-
scientific books. Einstein is revered by the physics community and in 1999 Time
magazine named him the "Person of the Century.” In wider culture the name
"Einstein" has become synonymous with genius.
“a person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.”
“i have no special talent. i am only passionately curious.”
“it's not that i'm so smart, it's just that i stay with problems longer.”
albert einstein
Einstein is hardly a name associated with failure, yet he dropped out of high school
and failed his college entrance exam. We know he was a genius that shaped the
way our world thinks. Only his attitude about problems pushed him to succeed.
Whether he knew it or not, his attitude made him successful and that is why he is
our hero of attitude.
< 28 >
< 30 >
The dictionary defines attitude as a state of mind or a feeling
towards a person or subject. Your attitude determines how you will
learn, serve, listen and make changes throughout your life.
Some believe that happy people are that way because they keep
the right frame of mind. They view life and the world in a positive
manner. They believe this is their secret to remaining stable,
healthy, optimistic and thoughtful.
The right attitude requires we take charge of our mind. Being
positive is more than lip service, it takes action.
A positive attitude is the end result of disciplined thinking. Positive
thinkers do not ignore their fears, but they refuse to dwell on them.
People with a positive attitude look for solutions to problems
instead of looking for someone to blame. Keeping a positive
attitude demands courage and persistence. This state-of-mind
allows us to see life differently. It views problems as growth
opportunities. Sometimes the learning experience becomes even
more valuable than the outcome.
If we understand the outcome, our experience will be valuable,
and then our attitude towards people and circumstances will
change. Our attitude becomes positive, even though not
everything will always happen the way we are expecting. The truth
is that it is very unrealistic to believe things always have to be the
way we expect them to be. Bad things happen to everyone, those
with a good attitude find ways to turn bad situations into good
ones.
“attitude is a little thing, Which makes a big
difference.”Winston churchill
n o T e s :
Attitude
< 31 >
BenefitsIf you develop a positive attitude, you minimize fear before you
face problems, because problems will have a purpose. If you have
a positive attitude you will:
1. Discipline your mind.
2. Define your destiny with a clear vision.
3. Know what to do and how to reach your goals.
4. Face each day with hope rather than dread.
5. Spread it to others. A positive attitude is contagious.
Maturity and success comes when you overcome attitudes of self-
pity, selfishness and other negative ways of thinking.
Steps to Follow Build a positive mental attitude by:
1. Producing a clear vision of purpose for your life. Focus and give
direction to your behavior. Look towards the future. Learn to be a
visionary, to see specifics in situations that are bringing you
closer to reaching your goals.
2. Being aware of negativity. Negativity will keep you from growing.
3. Applying the phrase, “Yes, I can do it.” Do what is right. Do not
focus on obstacles in front of you; just believe you will find a way
to overcome obstacles.
4. Bringing hope to your friends and family. Hope moves and
stimulates you and others towards action. Hope gives you the
energy to solve problems. Your positive attitude does not dwell in
the past. It brings hope for the future.
With every goal, there must be the right reason. With every
dream, there must be the right purpose. The foundation for
success is having a positive attitude.

David "Dave" Thomas (July 2nd, 1932 – January 8th, 2002) was an American restaurateur and
philanthropist. Thomas was the founder and chief executive officer of Wendy’s Old-Fashioned
Hamburgers, a fast food restaurant chain specializing in hamburgers. He is also known for
appearing in more than 800 commercial advertisements for the chain from 1989 to 2002–more
than any other person in television history.
Dave developed a great hard working attitude at a very young age. At the age of fifteen, Dave
got a job as a busboy at the Hobby House restaurant in Fort Wayne, Indiana. When his family
wanted to move out of the area, Dave dropped out of high school, moved in with the owners
and helped develop the business.
After Dave’s honorable discharge from the Army, he was offered a chance to turn around a
failing KFC restaurant. He helped save the restaurant and revolutionize the fast food industry
by simplifying the menu. At the time, there were tens of items on the menu, possibly more than
one-hundred. Thomas changed this by stripping it down to just the basic fried chicken and
salads. Working with KFC founder Col. Harland Sanders, he quit soon after being hired to
pursue further dreams.
Thomas sold his KFC franchises and opened his first Wendy’s in Columbus, OH, in 1969. In
1982, Thomas resigned from his day-to-day operations at Wendy’s. However, business
mistakes would soon bring about problems and hurt sales, causing the company’s new
president to urge Thomas back into a more active role with Wendy's. Thomas began to visit
franchises and promote his hardworking, so-called “mop-bucket attitude.” Today, 23% of
American’s say Wendy’s is their favorite fast-food restaurant, well ahead of the others (poll by
Zogby International).
“i think the harder you work, the more luck you have.”
“there's no one to stop you but yourself.”
Dave thomas.
Dave Thomas admitted making a mistake by dropping out of high school, but he did not make
a mistake by developing an attitude of hard work. Dave really lived out the American dream
and because of his hard work we have Wendy’s. Thanks Dave, you are our hero of hard work.

We should always finish what we begin. It is valuable to be known as a person
who gets results. The mind of a good hard worker concentrates on a goal he
has set for himself and always strives to finish the job with excellence. In order
to feel good ourselves we must make progress towards our goals and be
proud of what we are achieving.
BenefitsThere are benefits of being a hard worker.
1. Security—We can achieve a secure position in life when we have earned
that through hard work. We can enjoy a position of influence. We can
relate with others who are in leadership. They will recognize us as good
workers and will value us.
2. Wealth— If we keep increasing our value and continue growing our
income, we will be on the road to developing true wealth.
3. Satisfaction—Since we experience personal pride through the fruit of our
work, we will receive personal satisfaction and earn a reputation of being
a hard worker.
Elements of Hard Work To become a hard worker we must develop some of these qualities:
1. Be diligent. Take advantage of opportunities to do things. Launch yourself
into various efforts and focus on completion. Do not let procrastination or
negative emotions get in the way. Concentrate on doing what has to be
done. Doing it with a smile and a good attitude will take you far.
2. Be the best. Do not be satisfied with the first result if it is not high quality
work. Go beyond what you have done before. Demand excellence of
yourself. Use the best of your strengths.
3. Be smart. Let your conscience be your guide and make principled
decisions.
you Will be reWarded for your good Works.

< 37 >
4. Be creative. Always ask yourself how can I do things better, faster, and
wiser. When you seek to be creative, you will begin to do more things.
5. Develop your strengths and your character. See the big picture and how
you can affect it. If you generate ideas and serve others, you will be
successful.
Steps to Follow Hard workers motivate themselves by seeing challenges as new
opportunities. They increase their abilities and learn new ways of doing things.
They work not just for a salary but for their future. The quality and quantity of
their work does not depend on what they receive as a salary. As a hard
worker, they are aware that those who work only for money will never be
completely satisfied. There are two attitudes that we need to avoid:
1. Laziness—Laziness has the same nature as a buzzard, it doesn’t kill or
earn its own food, and it lives on what is left over from the work of others.
If we accept laziness in our lives, it will close doors and opportunities.
2. Desire for easy money—This includes anything that is a scheme to get
rich quick. The desire or love for money can become obsessive. It leads
people down the wrong path.
Anything that cannot be used is either fixed or thrown away. Likewise, if we do
not work or will not take responsibilities, we will be set aside. We will not be
valued and we will not be needed. So, if we are a good hard worker, we will
be valued and appreciated.
Hard work is a personal quality. It impacts our community and our nation.
Keep in mind, hard work has a direct relationship to intelligence, quality and
success.

walter elias disney
(December 5th, 1901-December 15th, 1966) was a multiple Academy Award-winning
American film producer, director, screenwriter, voice actor, animator, entrepreneur and
philanthropist. Disney is noted as one of the most influential and innovative figures in the
field of entertainment during the twentieth century. As the co-founder (with his brother Roy
O. Disney) of Walt Disney Productions, Disney became one of the best-known motion
picture producers in the world. The corporation he co-founded, now known as The Walt
Disney Company, today has annual revenues of approximately $35 billion.
Disney is particularly remembered for being a film producer and a popular showman, as
well as an innovator in animation and theme park design. He received fifty-nine Academy
Award nominations and won twenty-six Oscars, including a record four in one year. He
holds the record for an individual with the most awards and the most nominations. He won
seven Emmy Awards. Disney and his staff created a number of the world's most famous
fictional characters, including the one many consider Disney's alter ego, Mickey Mouse.
Mickey is the namesake for Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resort theme parks in the
United States, France, Japan and China.
Disney died of lung cancer on December 15th, 1966, a few years prior to the opening of his
Walt Disney World dream project in Orlando, Florida.
“a man should never neglect his family for business.”
“all our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.”
“laughter is america's most important export.”
“We believed in our idea - a family park where parents and children could have fun-
together.”
walt Disney
Everyone knows Walt Disney. His innovations have shaped our world. He was a good
thinker. He was a proper thinker. He wanted to bring joy to parents and children all over
the world. He valued family. Not many people think like Walt Disney and that is the reason
he is our hero of proper thinking.

< 42 >
Our mind is an amazing gift, and no one fully understands it, but we do
know two things it does: it reasons and it imagines.
Reasoning is more like calculating, which leads us to concepts, opinions
or considerations, while imagination leads us to ideas or possibilities.
Although, they both work within our mind, most of us operate more
predominately in one of the two.
We may reason well and be full of common sense; however, we may be
weak in creative thinking. Our weak creative thinking may be linked to a
bad experience or failure, which has influenced our mind to behave a
certain way. As the old proverb above states, “As a man thinks, so he is.”
This means we may determine our future by being aware of our thinking.
What we think about today is what we will become tomorrow.
Thoughts always precede actions. A person is what he thinks about, not
always what he does. Our society is the product of an environment we
create coming from our beliefs. Let’s remember this pattern: our thoughts
will produce actions, actions will form habits, habits become our character
and our character determines our destiny. Knowing this, we should
become very conscientious about what we read, what we see, what we
hear, and who we associate with.
Benefits If you do this, you will receive the following benefits:
1. You will enjoy life. As a human, you are able to choose how you will
live by the values and principles you select.
2. You will have self-control. When you take control over your thoughts
you are taking control of your decisions and their outcomes!
3. You will not have to deal with the consequences of poor choices. Your
thinking will be based on sound logic.
as a man thinks, so he is!
n o T e s :
Proper Thinking
So, if you want a positive future ...
•You must desire and choose to have a positive future and re-evaluate
your present state of mind. Ask yourself. “Am I becoming who I want to
be?
•You must select good and positive media. What we have been thinking
has brought us to where we are, so to get somewhere else, we must
choose different input. There is a huge difference between reality and
fantasy.
•You must consider the outcome of what you put in your mind. What
good will it bring? Your mind is like a computer and will be programmed
based on your choices.
•You must remember that your destiny is in your hands. You become
what you think about and you create your environment by the values you
promote and choose.
Change will come if you: 1. Get tired of living the way you are living and the results you are
getting.
2. Recognize it is your responsibility to change. The way you think is
your choice.
3. Seek a wise person who can mentor you, someone wit hgood morals.
Your thinking can help you make wise choices.
4. Receive help and align your behavior with thoughts well grounded in
good morals based on principles. That is aligning yourself with
absolute, life principles.
Steps to Follow 1. Make decisions based on good morals and principles. Determine to do
what is right!
2. Envision what you want to have and become in life. Control your
thoughts by focusing on your destiny and say to yourself, “If I continue
like this I will end up like this.”
3. Develop your mind with a good selection of reading, TV programs and
other media. Violent and aggressive behavior comes from the mass
media polluting your mind to create higher ratings at the expense of
moral decay. The media shapes what we believe, but in reality it is just
drama.
4. Select good quality friends.
5. Remember to develop your character following these guidelines:
Create the habit of controlling your thoughts because your character
depends on it!

mentor of Pressure
henry louis "hank" aaron
(February 5, 1934) nicknamed "Hammer", "Hammerin' Hank” or "Bad Henry”, was a retired
American baseball player whose Major League Baseball (MLB) career spanned from 1954
through 1976. Aaron started his Major League Baseball career in 1954. He played 21
seasons with the Atlanta Braves in the National League, and his last two years (1975-
1976) with the Milwaukee Brewers in the American League. Throughout his career, Aaron
had many accomplishments and records. His most notable achievement was setting the
MLB record for most career home runs with 755, which he held for 33 years until being
surpassed by San Francisco Giants outfielder Barry Bonds on August 7, 2007.
Although Aaron himself downplayed the "chase" to surpass Babe Ruth’s homerun record,
baseball enthusiasts and the national media grew increasingly excited as he closed in.
At the age of 39, Aaron managed to slug 40 home runs in 392 at-bats, ending the season
one home run short of the record. He hit home run number 713 on September 29th, 1973,
and with one day remaining in the season, many expected him to tie the record. But in his
final game that year, playing against the Houston Astros (led by manager Leo Durocher,
who had once roomed with Babe Ruth), he was unable to hit one out of the park. After the
game, Aaron stated that his only fear was that he might not live to see the 1974 season.
Over the winter, Aaron was the recipient of death threats and a large assortment of hate
mail from people who did not want to see a black man break Ruth's nearly sacrosanct home
run record. The threats extended to those providing positive press coverage of Aaron.
Lewis Grizzard, then editor of the Atlanta Journal, reported receiving numerous phone calls
calling them "nigger lovers" for covering Aaron's chase. While preparing the massive
coverage of the home run record, he quietly had an obituary written, scared that Aaron
might be murdered.
As you can see, Hank Aaron endured a tremendous amount of pressure as he closed in on
Babe Ruth’s record. If he hit a homerun, he would die. Despite the threats Hank Aaron rose
above the pressure and hit number 715. Therefore, Hank Aaron is our hero for pressure.

We all should live under pressure, but that should not be confused with
living under stress. There are two types of people: proactive and
reactive. Proactive people look ahead to anticipate what is coming next.
They put themselves and others under pressure to achieve goals and
to avoid problems. Reactive people respond after the problems are
created, which in turn brings stress in life. As we live life we must
remember there is a clear difference between pressure and stress.
Pressure is a decision we make on our own. It stretches and challenges
us. It will take us to a higher level. In sports, we push ourselves to our
limit to win. In teams, we coordinate efforts and resources to succeed.
Pressure motivates us to get something done. Stress, however,
demands from us and leaves us feeling stuck, trapped and overloaded.
For example, if you choose not to study for a major exam, you will feel
stressed when taking the test. Stress will often lead to less than
average results or total failure. Stress is hard on your body and
counterproductive. It can produce health issues, trouble sleeping,
negative thoughts and leaves you completely exhausted.
Benefits:People under pressure will expereince these benefits:
1.You will achieve your purpose.
2.You will enjoy the passion of following your dreams by overcoming
obstacles and reaching goals.
3. You will learn to turn your desires and ideas into projects.
Without Pressure, there Won’t be any
Progress.
n o T e s :
Pressure
< 49 >
Characteristics of Self-Applied Pressure:• You will not need motivation from others. You will act out of the
pressure you put on yourself.
• You will plan because you know that dreams and purposes in life
require organization.
• You will have your eyes set on your objective. You are determined to
complete your mission.
• You love challenges! You will always look for them and you will find
them.
• You desire to achieve. This is a characteristic found in all of us. The
feeling of achievement strengthens your self-esteem.
It is very important to live under self-imposed pressure and not personal
stress. At times, you will have some stress; however, if you fine-tune
your goals you can manage it. Knowing your limits will help you make
the right changes to your goals.
Steps to Follow1.Be proactive, not reactive. Choose and learn to face life under
pressure and not under stress. Look ahead and be alert to what may
come. Learn to prevent last minute requests. To maintain high
standards, you have to plan.
2.Aim to excel. Do not settle for average. People that make a difference
are proactive. Make things happen and believe the pressure will pay
off.
3.See things as they could be and not as they are. If you are looking for
opportunity, you will find it. You are a creative person. Keep your mind
awake by looking for possibilities. Enjoy the rush that comes with
bigger challenges.
4. Stop being a spectator and get off your seat. Enjoy the challenges and
know that without pressure there will not be any progress.
5. Do not close your mind to the future. Without dreams and motivations
there is no initiative. Your mind will be activated through exploring,
dreaming and looking ahead. When you attain the things your mind
has explored, dreamed and projected, it will encourage you to
continue. It is a self- sustaining cycle.

mentor of emotions
dr. martin luther king
(January 15th, 1929 - April 4th, 1968) was one of the most pivotal leaders of the
American Civil Rights Movement. King was a Baptist minister, which was one of the few
leadership roles available to black men at the time. He became a civil rights activist early
in his career. He led the Montgomery Bus Boycott (1955–1956) and helped found the
Southern Christian Leadership Conference (1957), serving as its first president. His
efforts led to the 1963 March on Washington, where King delivered his “I Have a Dream”
speech. Here he raised public consciousness of the civil rights movement and
established himself as one of the greatest orators in U.S. history. In 1964, King became
the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to end segregation
and racial discrimination through civil disobedience and other non-violent means.
King was assassinated on April 4th, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee. He was awarded the
Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Jimmy Carter in 1977. Martin Luther King
Jr. Day was established as a national holiday in the United States in 1986. In 2004, King
was posthumously awarded a Congressional Gold Medal.
“a man who won't die for something is not fit to live.”
“nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and
conscientious stupidity.”
“our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”
martin luther King Jr.
Martin Luther King Jr. was a man on a mission. His personal beliefs were the driving
force of that mission, but not once did he lose his cool or seem out of control. His
passionate emotions guided him peacefully through one of the biggest social
movements the world has ever seen. He used his positive emotions to better our world
today and for that he is our hero of emotions.
< 52 >
< 54 >
Emotions are like gasoline – they can both be dangerous and destructive but
extremely powerful when used properly. By directing our emotional energy,
we can become more productive. It is proven when we are angry or in an
emergency situation our bodies can produce enough adrenaline to make us
twice as strong and have long stretches of endurance.
So, it is clear that our behavior is directly affected by our emotions. In order
to rule our behavior, we must control our reactions. We view reality through
our senses but we define it through our minds. Everything we hear, see,
smell, taste or touch is captured by our minds. Each situation is analyzed by
our mind and it chooses a response.
In order to activate our dreams, we must be responsible to manage our
behavior, emotions and reactions. A person who can fulfill their dreams while
being responsible and governing their emotions demonstrates true character.
Uncontrolled emotions can be very powerful and destructive.
Relationships are affected by our emotions. When we are under stress and
when our emotions get in the way of clear decision making, we will ruin good
relationships and waste opportunities. When these behaviors are frequent, we
may become branded as unreasonable and be rejected or isolated. If we learn
to calm our emotions we will be in control of situations, rather than situations
controlling us. We should remember to think before we act.
BenefitsIf you govern your emotions, you will:
1. Have clear thinking and you will not be controlled by your emotional
impulses.
2. Be viewed as a mature person and you will create a good reputation.
he Who rules his emotions is greater than
he that takes a city.
n o T e s :
Emotions
< 55 >
3. Attract others to you.
4. Be able to identify problems and find solutions.
Actions and non-verbal body language are almost always much more
powerful than words. The way we dress, walk and behave all transmit a
message. Our expressions and our actions communicate much more than
words by themselves.
People who handle their emotions can be recognized by these traits:
1. They are consistent with their moods and attitudes. They communicate with
their behavior and example, and then use words if necessary.
2. They have good judgement about people because they hold them up to an
objective standard.
Steps to FollowIn order to control your emotions:
1. Program your mind to master your emotions. The only way you can control
your mind is if you think on good values and sound principles. This will help
your mind advise you properly. The mind is primarily a processor and will
recommend responses based on how it has been programmed.
2. Remind yourself of the danger or cost of extreme emotional stress. The
better you control your emotions, the healthier you will be.
3. Learn to recognize your emotions and govern their energy. Ask yourself why
you sometimes have such quick reactions. Give yourself some time before
reacting. Ask yourself if this situation is worth your reaction and if it is, give it
your full attention and energy … choose your battles wisely.
4. Eliminate moodiness. Know yourself well enough to recognize what situations
can set-off your emotions. Moody and unstable behavior can bring as much
harm to you as to others. This instability may be the result of internal hurts
that need resolved.
5. Learn to be more tolerant and do not judge others so quickly. Do not expect
perfection from yourself or from other people around you. Just remember no
one likes to be judged!
Emotions are good and necessary to our daily life. They energize our
convictions and actions. Once we know what is right we need to give it all of
our energy. Apply them to what you know you should do: be kind to others,
respect your teachers, family and friends and be honest with yourself.

mentor of restraint
Viktor Frankl, m.d., ph.d(March 26, 1905 - September 2, 1997) was a Jewish, Austrian neurologist, psychiatrist and
a Holocaust survivor. He studied medicine and specialized in neurology and psychiatry,
concentrating on the topics of depression and suicide. Frankl’s book, Man's Search for
Meaning, was first published in 1946. The book explains his horrible experiences as a
concentration camp inmate and describes his search to find a reason to continue living.
Frankl concluded that you can overcome life by developing your own values and self-
meaning.
Frankl studied medicine at the University of Vienna. Frankl specialized in helping people
with major emotional and life-threatening troubles. He was very successful at his practice.
In 1938, Frankl was prohibited from treating patients due to his Jewish ethnicity. In 1940,
he started practicing as a brain surgeon. The hospital he worked at was the only one in
Vienna admitting Jews. Several times, his medical opinions saved patients from being
killed by the Nazis rule.
In the Autumn of 1942, he, his wife, and his parents were deported to the ghetto of
Theresienstadt, which was a concentration camp. Although he was assigned to be a
general practitioner, Frankl tried to help mentally distraught prisoners and prevent suicides.
This treatment was forbidden by the Nazis, so in October of 1944, he was transported to a
Nazi death camp. Meanwhile, his wife had been transferred to another camp, where she
died. Frankl’s father and mother had been sent to Auschwitz and they died there, as well.
In April of 1945, Frankl was liberated by the Americans. Among his immediate relatives, the
only survivor was his sister, who had escaped by immigrating to Australia. In 1955, he was
awarded a professorship at University of Vienna, and was a visiting professor at Harvard
University.
“there are only two kinds of races: corrupt and non-corrupt.”
viktor frankl
It was due to Frankl and other Jews suffering that he came to his conclusion that even in
the most awful, painful and dehumanized situations, life has meaning. Frankl restrained
from believing that he was nothing. He developed his own will to live and he refused to die
for the sake of anger. For this reason, Viktor Frankl is our hero of restraint.

< 60 >
Many times, a wound in the body can take years of healing but
wounds to our soul can last a lifetime. We need to recognize the
power of words. Words can bury dreams, demolish self-esteem, and
destroy potential. This can happen daily in many homes and
schools. It is easy to see faults and bad habits of people but
sometimes we fail to recognize their talents and potential. This
discourages people and brings them down. Remember that
everything we say will come back to us. Words can either bring
solutions or problems. It is ironic we will think twice before we would
punch someone but many times we will not think twice before we
speak out in anger with cruel and insulting words.
Words have a direct relationship to the law of sowing and reaping.
Sometimes we may say wrong things about others. This is a form of
gossip. After we think about it, sometimes we may even try to repair
the damage by blaming others or by justifying our actions. This
begins a vicious circle that is never ending. Sometimes it takes years
to recover from hurtful words that were so quickly spoken.
Remember, we do not have to say everything we think. Words can
be quick and instant. That is why it is important to filter the words we
choose and the attitude we have when delivering them. The principle
of Restraint means to hold back our words, learning to keep our
mouths shut so that we will not become embarrassed or hurt others.
Once you say something you can’t take it back but you can control
unspoken words.
a quick resPonse can ruin
everything.
n o T e s :
Restraint
< 61 >
Benefits: 1.When we are slow to speak we avoid the consequences of
saying something negative.
2.We will learn to express our minds in an encouraging way.
3.We will become wise and learn that words have life.
Basics:People with restraint have three major attributes:
1.Wisdom. Restraint helps us grow in our ability to analyze. We will
learn to hold something inside our mind and not allow it to spill
out of our mouth. This will make us good listeners and we will
gain good insight into people and situations.
2.Integrity. Because we restrain our thoughts and words, we will be
consistent. Many times our integrity falls short because there is
no unity in our thoughts or words. The person who has integrity
has a unity of thought, word and action. They recognize that what
they believe is in their words.
3.Humility. A very common answer of wise people is simply, “I don’t
know.” That may be a good answer. Many people are reluctant to
admit that they don’t know. They always want to give an answer.
There is nothing wrong with saying, “I don’t know.”
Steps to FollowRestraint is a discipline that is achieved through steady and diligent
practice. This is how to start:
1.Understand the power of your words. You have the ability to do
good or bad through the power of your words. Your future is
affected by your words.
2.Practice being kind. Congratulate others and encourage them,
this will build them up. Recognize the lasting effect of inspiration.
On many occasions, this could transform lives, circumstances
and destiny.
3.Recognize the long-term effects of your words. Words are very
important because they remain in the minds of people. When in a
conflict, it is better to write down what we want to say because
we can look over it and find a better way to say it. Our words are
forever remembered.
n o T e s :
Remember
< 62 >
Reflect and Respond

Have you ever hurt someone because you did not
practice restraint?
Why is it hard to restrain yourself and filter your words

tiger woods
Eldrick "Tiger" Woods is an American professional golfer whose achievements to date
rank him among the most successful golfers of all time. Currently the World’s No. 1,
Woods was the highest-paid professional athlete in 2006, having earned an estimated
$100 million from winnings and endorsements. Golf Digest predicts Woods will become
the world's first billionaire athlete in 2010.
Woods has won thirteen professional major golf championships, the second highest of
any male player, and 64 PGA Tour events, tied for third all time. He has more career
major wins and career PGA tour wins than any other active golfer. He is the youngest
player to achieve the career Grand Slam and the youngest and fastest to win 50
tournaments on Tour. Woods has held the number one position in the world rankings for
the most consecutive weeks and for the greatest total number of weeks. He has been
awarded PGA player of the year a record nine times, the Byron Nelson Award for lowest
adjusted scoring average a record eight times, and has tied Jack Nicklaus’s record of
leading the money list in eight different seasons. He has been named Associated Press
male athlete of the year four times, a record he shares with Lance Armstrong.
“i want to be what i've always wanted to be: dominant.”
“you can always become better.”

You would think Tiger has reached all his goals. Nope! He is currently developing his
own golf course in Dubai. He is never satisfied and is continually working on his game.
He is a goal-setter and a goal-achiever. Tiger, you are our hero for goals.

“A journey of 1000 miles starts with one step.” One way to measure is
to establish clear goals for short, medium and long range plans. Once
we know where we want to end up, we can then chart our journey to
get there. Long-term goals may take several years to accomplish and
will undoubtly include obstacles that must be overcome. The highest
mountains on earth have been climbed one step at a time.
Whatever you do in life should be done based on your goals. First, you
have to decide what you want to be or achieve. Then you can
determine short-term strategies and establish a plan. This plan lays out
step-by-step what needs to be done in order to arrive at the end. You
may need to learn new skills or perfect ones you already know. Goals
should be challenging but reachable. Once you experience some
success you can re-evaluate your goal. Things don’t just happen. You
can dream of many possibilities and have desires but you won’t reach
them without a plan.
Benefits Establishing goals will give you many important things such as:
• A way to measure progress towards your goals.
• Increased personal value and confidence.
• More control of your life, because you are firmly holding on to your
dreams and future.
• A sense of accomplishment as you overcome difficulties.
• Purpose and direction for your life.
When goals are not established, you feel like life is full of random

situations and constant drama. Keep in mind, when you shoot at
nothing, you will be sure to hit it! If you do not have a target, you have
no way to measure your progress.
Characteristics of Goal-setters: 1. They keep records in writing. They define certain duties attached to
specific time frames.
2. They concentrate on their goals.
3. They review their progress on a consistent basis.
4. Their plans are flexible. They review their goals and make
adjustments as needed.
5. They achieve their goals and experience success!
Steps to Follow There are seven basic steps to apply to be successful:
1. Write your dreams down! Dreams become goals when you find a
way to make them happen.
2. Write down how much it is going to cost. If you are going to
achieve it, you must find out and examine the cost, the resources
and the time required.
3. Understand there is a price to pay to see dreams come true.
Sometimes the price and the sacrifice to make dreams come true
are higher than expected. Adjusting goals may be necessary for
your life to progress.
4. Pace yourself! When you write down and specify what you are
going to do in a week, a month and in a year, be realistic in how
much can be acheived.
5. Keep focused on your goals. Review your goals frequently and pay
attention to your progress.
6. Create your own strategy. Just remember that when you properly
set goals and the right sequence for them, they will take you to your
desired destiny.
7. Always follow ethical principles to develop your character.
The fulfillment of a goal is only assured when wemake a commitment to do it.

mentor of savings
samuel walton(March 29th, 1918 – April 5th, 1992) Samuel Moore Walton, was an American
businessman and entrepreneur born in Kingfisher, Oklahoma, who founded two
American retailers: Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club. He was the patriarch of the Walton
Family, one of the richest families in the world.
In 1945, after leaving the military, Walton decided he wanted to own a department store
but would settle for a variety store. With some help from his father-in-law with a loan of
$20,000, plus $5000 he had saved from his time in the Army, Walton purchased a Ben
Franklin variety store in Newport, Arkansas. The store was a franchise of the Butler
Brothers chain.
It was here that Walton pioneered many concepts that would prove to be crucial to his
success. Walton made sure the shelves were consistently stocked with a wide range of
goods at low prices. His store also stayed open later than most other stores, especially
during the Christmas season. He also pioneered the practice of discount merchandising
by buying wholesale goods from the lowest priced supplier. This allowed him to pass
on savings to his customers, which drove up his sales volume. Higher volumes allowed
him to negotiate even lower purchase prices with the wholesaler on subsequent
purchases. Walton's store led in sales and profits in the Butler Brothers' six-state
region.
Walton's first large discount store was opened under the Wal-Mart name in 1962 in
Rogers, Arkansas. It had only 25 employees and was less than one-fifth the size of
modern Wal-Mart stores. Wal-Mart is now the world's largest retailer, with more than
4,100 stores in the United States and 3,100 more overseas.
“capital isn't scarce; vision is.”
Sam walton
Sam Walton not only saved money himself but he also saved his customers money, and
that legacy has influenced our nation to this day. Sam was a master of savings, he was
a good steward and for that reason he is our hero of savings.

Savings 10
< 72 >
Years ago, people were judged by their ability to save and protect their
personal belongings. It did not matter whether these belongings were
small or valuable, they would take care of them. These people
understood the importance of saving for the future. People were used
to spending only the money remaining after bills were paid. There was
no option of having a credit card and a popular saying was, “A penny
saved is a penny earned.” Wasting money was shameful. They saved
for their annual expenses and always kept a reserve for life
emergencies. Many parents tried to have money saved to leave to their
children as an inheritance.
Today, it is the opposite. We no longer live by the principle of savings.
It has become acceptable to be greedy with our money or to waste all
we have, but these extremes are unhealthy. We need to be balanced
with a solid budget. So, before spending money we need to earn it.
Our media is full of advertisements that try to make us desire more
things. Commercials trap us into thinking that if we have a certain style
and the latest brands we will be popular, happy or sexy.
Our financial system has made it easy to get loans and use credit
cards. Every day we are bombarded with pre-approved credit cards and
sneaky schemes advertising no interest for six months. You may be
thinking this does not apply to you right now but you need to know
young adults are one of the biggest targets for credit cards. These
schemes trick us into thinking we are making a deal but in reality they
set us up for financial disaster. Impulsive spending will rob you of your
freedom and become a barrier to achieving your goals. Many young
people in the world spend years trying to recover from these schemes
and the financial stresses are known to cause health and family issues.

Savings

Benefits1. Savings develops an attitude of value. When you patiently save to buy
something, you understand what something is worth. Our thoughts will
be on preserving things, making things last longer, keeping things
repaired, and getting more mileage out of the things we already own.
2. The value of saving will create an attitude of appreciation for what you
have vs. what can you buy.
3. You will be able to restrain yourself from impulsive buying. Your
attitude toward savings eliminates waste.
Characteristics of Savers: • They manage their credit wisely.
• They invest for their future.
• When the economy gets tough, they do not sweat because they are
financially secure.
• They have managed their money in a right way, which helps them avoid
financial stress.
Steps to FollowBefore buying something we should ask ourselves these questions:
1. Do I need it?
2. Can I afford it?
3. Why do I want it?
4. When should I have it?
We have developed a throw-away, self-serving society, and we are
programmed to think, “If I want it, I’ll get it. I deserve it now. I’ll charge
it and make those easy monthly payments.” So, we spend, spend, and
spend, trying to satisfy ourselves and keep up with everyone else. We
foolishly spend not only what we have, but what we do not have as well.

Was an American botany researcher and agronomy educator who worked in agricultural
expansion at the Tuskegee Institute, in Tuskegee, Alabama, teaching former slaves
farming techniques for self-sufficiency. His exact birth day and year are unknown, yet he
knew it was some time before slavery was abolished in Missouri in January, 1865. To
commemorate his life, George Washington Carver Recognition Day is celebrated every
January 5th, on the day Carver died.
To bring education to farmers, Carver designed a mobile school, called a Jesup Wagon
after the New York financier, Morris Ketchum Jesup, who provided funding. In 1921,
Carver spoke in favor of a peanut tariff before the Ways and Means Committee of the
United States House of Representatives. Given the racial discrimination of the time, it
was unusual for a black person to be called as an expert. Carver's well received
testimony earned him national attention, and he became an unofficial spokesman for the
peanut industry. Carver wrote 44 practical agricultural bulletins for farmers.
In the Reconstruction South, an agricultural monoculture of cotton depleted the soil;
and, in the early 20th century, the boll weevil destroyed much of the cotton crop. Much
of Carver's fame was based on his research and promotion of alternative crops to
cotton, such as peanuts and sweet potatoes. He wanted poor farmers to grow
alternative crops as both a source of their own food and a cash crop. His most popular
bulletin contained 105 existing food recipes that used peanuts. His most famous method
of promoting the peanut involved his creation of about 100 existing industrial products
from peanuts, including cosmetics, dyes, paints, plastics, gasoline and nitroglycerin. His
industrial products from peanuts excited the public imagination but none was a
successful commercial product.
“When you do the common things in life in an uncommon way, you will
command the attention of the world.”
george washington Carver
George Washington Carver was educated but not over-educated. It was his ability to
reason and see common problems that others could not see that enabled him to
practically change the world around him. Carver used his brains and his practical
reasoning and that is the reason he is our hero of common sense.

< 78 >
Common sense is sound logic, practical sense and good reasoning. It
is searching for simple, but very useful ways of getting things done to
solve problems or complete projects. We are all born with the ability to
think, create and solve problems. Whenever we combine this thinking
with the resources around us we use common sense.
Common sense is not old-fashioned or opposed to technological
changes. We adapt our thinking to the current situation and take
advantage of tools, knowledge and whatever other resources might be
available to us. When we lack common sense we make decisons based
on emotions rather than logic.
Benefits When we practice common sense we:
1. Are better prepared to adapt to change in the way we do things.
2. Stay alert to the changes in the world.
3. Will detect gimmicks or when someone is over representing their
products.
4. Will not be easily fooled because we value transparency and
honesty.
People that use common sense in life teach us: a. The value of a practical mind
b. To have an open mind
We must remember we were born with our eyes closed and our mouths

open. It takes a lifetime to reverse it.
Steps to Follow 1. Always be open to changes or adjustments. This does not mean all
change is good but you can discover things as you move along.
Common sense will speak to your heart. It is sometimes called the
gut feeling. It is a commonly accepted fact that no family, company
or nation can survive without being part of a plan, but this shouldn’t
be so rigid that we close our minds to listening to the heart when it
suggests using common sense.
2. Keep contact with reality. If we lose common sense, we lost contact
with reality. Common sense helps us to keep balance. Think twice
before you act. This gives your common sense an opportunity to
speak.
3. Do what you know is right. The opposite of common sense is
foolishness. There is a saying that states, “The person without
common sense may wind up dead.”
5. Avoid remaining in a situation that may have the tendency to cause
you to be mediocre or corrupt. Learn to be transparent with your
thoughts and actions. Break any barriers you may feel by using
common sense.
Life was not intended to be complicated. If we separate ourselves from
common sense, simplicity may disappear and then we may get lost in
confusion. There are moments in life in which we lose balance because
of the different arenas of our lives. It might be because our minds are
under a lot of pressure. In these moments, stop and ask yourself, “What
is the right thing to do?” Common sense will make some
recommendations.

mentor of generosity
mother teresa(August 26th, 1910 – September 5th 1997) Mother Teresa was an Albanian Roman
Catholic Nun who founded the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta, India in 1950. For
over forty years she ministered to the poor, sick, orphaned, and dying, while guiding the
Missionaries of Charity's expansion, first throughout India and then in other countries.
By the 1970’s she had become internationally famed as a humanitarian and advocate
for the poor and helpless, due in part to a documentary and book, Something Beautiful
for God by Malcolm Muggeridge. She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for her
humanitarian work. Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity continued to expand and at
the time of her death it was operating 610 missions in 123 countries, including hospices
and homes for people with HIV/AIDS, leprosy and tuberculosis, soup kitchens,
children's and family counseling programs, orphanages and schools.
Following her death she was beatified by Pope John Paul the II and given the title
Blessed Teresa of Calcutta.
“Good works are links that form a chain of love.”
“if you can't feed a hundred people, then feed just one.”
“one of the greatest diseases is to be nobody to anybody.”
mother theresa
Mother Theresa did not have a lot of money and material resources, yet she was one
of the most generous people of our time. She realized that she could make a difference
just by being generous with her time and her heart. She accomplished great feats and
was generous to everyone she came in contact with and for that reason she is our hero
of generosity.
< 82 >
< 84 >
Generosity means to be willing to help others graciously and unselfishly. It is
giving of our time, talent and resourses to help others. Many people think
generosity is just giving money or giving things we do not use anymore. True
generosity is much more. It means we give because of who we are.
If we are only interested in our own needs, we will neglect the needs of others.
Giving of ourselves is the highest form of generosity. We were not born just to
serve ourselves.
Generous people look for opportunities to give and even derive a sense of
satisfaction from the act of giving. In giving to others we “invest” in them and
affirm their value as human beings. Generous people always see potential in the
people and organizations they support.
When society closes its eyes to the needy, or has an indifferent attitude towards
the poor, it leads to increased poverty and moral decay. Communities that
practice true generosity can greatly reduce poverty in their city. As more people
find ways to help others then more people become successful and work their
way toward prosperity.
Benefits:1. When we are generous, we actually create a reward system for ourselves.
2. It is always better to be a small portion of something big, than to be all of
something small.
3. Being generous helps your community.
Basics:1. It is important we develop generosity in ourselves and others. When we look at
the poor we should see them as people with potential. It is important we do not
look at poverty as a permanent condition.

2. If we understand generosity, we understand it is not just giving people what
they need, it is teaching them how to get it for themselves. A generous
person looks ahead for long-term solutions.
3. If a person is greedy they do not invest in others. They hold onto their
resources instead of releasing them. Therefore, they do not share in the
prosperity and success of others.
Steps to FollowPractice these qualities, if you want to be a generous person:
1. Look for the potential in others. Recognize what they can become.
Concentrate on the best aspects of others.
2. Be sensitive to other people’s needs. Try understanding people’s needs and
administer hope to elevate them.
3. Share your knowledge, ideas and experience. Talk to your family, friends and
peers. Make yourself available.
