#GrantInAction The Foundation’s Educational Grant Program is supporting the district’s STEM initiatives with grants awarded to elementary and secondary classrooms. In the past two years the Foundation has provided funds for 59 science and technology grants ranging from forensics to chemistry to hydroponic gardens as well as 37 math grants. Kit and Patti McKee have lived in Allen since 1993. Their careers spanned more than 30 years with plenty of community involvement along the way, including Kit’s service on the Foundation board. “As soon as I became involved with the Foundation I knew that I wanted to provide a scholarship. I like that we can have a very direct impact on a student and hopefully help them achieve their goals without a huge amount of student debt.” The McKee Family Scholarship has been awarded for two years in the amount of $5,000. “Our scholarship is a way for Patti and I to give back to a community that has done so much for us and our children.”

New for the AHS Class of 2019, Matt Bruno created this $1,500 scholarship for a student who has an outstanding work ethic and a dedication to their academics, and has given time to volunteer service at school or in their community.

Created by the wife and daughters of Fred Hansen, this scholarship was awarded for the first time in 2019 to a female student who plans to study in the areas of science, technology, engineering or math. “My father valued hard work and education,” said Tracy Henderson. “He encouraged all five of us to get our college degrees. We are so happy to give this scholarship – he’d be pleased!”

YOU can fund a scholarship for an Allen High School graduate! Scholarships can be given in the name of a company, a family, a school or PTA, alumni groups, a civic group, or in memory/honor of an individual. The Foundation works with each donor to identify their focus and priorities. Students apply online and follow a rigorous interview process with selection made by the Foundation scholarship committee. Options for funding a scholarship include annual funding, establishing an endowment fund, or building an endowment fund while also awarding a yearly scholarship. Donors meet their students each spring at the Scholarship Reception and are recognized in a variety of ways by the Foundation.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS Once again the Allen Eagle Run brought out runners, walkers, strollers and lots of friends and family to celebrate community, health, fitness and education. The run included a 1-Mile Fun Run, 5K Run, a visit from the AHS Eagles football team, and lots of activities provided by Allen area businesses and organizations. Proceeds help fund student scholarships, campus programs, PTA projects and teacher scholarships. Total Eagle Run dollars going directly back into schools: $64,500!

Karen Hunnicutt believes that she “has the best job in the world. I get up every day and look forward to what I have to do.” In a time with so much negative publicity and rancor regarding public education, it is remarkable to listen to this 22+ year veteran teacher speak with such deep joy for her career.

“My job is a gift every day.” Karen has taught World History, U.S. History, English, AP/IB Psychology and IB Theory of Knowledge. For several years, Karen applied for and received a grant from the Foundation For Allen Schools to cover the cost of taking her Allen High School psychology students to visit Terrell State Hospital in Terrell. “It meant so much to me as a teacher to have something like the Foundation to work with me, to provide the additional funds for the bus transportation that we would not have otherwise.” “The thing that always impressed me the most from our field trips to the Terrell State Hospital was the student reaction. On their own, the kids decided they would gather gifts and supplies for those at Terrell State Hospital – clothes, shoes, books and all kinds of items that they need or would enjoy. Because the

students got them athletic shoes many of the residents are now able to participate in gym activities. This was all a student lead effort.” Karen is constantly amazed at the ways students find to serve others. Several years ago Karen began making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the homeless in Dallas; she worked with The Stew Pot to distribute the food. When a few of her students learned what she was doing, they jumped

in and helped. Now a large group of students, service clubs, other AHS teachers and community members make sandwiches every Friday afternoon and take them to The Stew Pot. Karen is known as the teacher who gets to bring her dog to school. In 2014 Karen and her husband Eric officially became “Puppy Raisers” for Patriot Paws, a nonprofit organization that provides service dogs for disabled American veterans. “I love working with Patriot Paws, and with The Stew

Pot. These organizations make our community better. I also really love working with the Foundation. The Foundation has done so much to support what we can do for our students and what they can learn outside of the classroom walls. The Foundation makes what I do as a teacher better.”
