Sentinel–1: C-band SAR mission
Data continuity of ERS and ENVISAT missions
Copernicus radar imaging mission for ocean, land, emergency
 Applications:
• monitoring sea ice zones and the arctic environment
• surveillance of marine environment (e.g. oil spill monitoring)
• maritime security (e.g. ship detection)
• wind, wave, current monitoring
• monitoring of land surface motion (subsidence, landslide, tectonics, volcanoes, etc.)
• support to emergency / risk management (e.g. flooding, etc.) and humanitarian aid in crisis situations
• mapping of land surfaces: agriculture, forest, water and soil, etc.
SENTINEL-1 Mission Profile
C-band Radar instrument Sun-synchronous orbit 12-day repeat cycle at Equator
(6 days with 2 satellites) 4 exclusive SAR modes
4
• BLUE: European coverage EEA-39
Acquisitions in IW mode, VV+VH
polarisation (5m x20m), every cycle,
ascending and descending
• BLACK: Acquisitions in IW mode, VV+VH
polarisation, every 12 days either
ascending or descending.• Repeat over parts of SE-Asia IW VV+VH
currently every 24 days, plus
complementary acquisitions in IW VV
• North Andes and Tanzania covered with
lower frequency (dedicated campaigns
for forestry monitoring)
• Agriculture outside Europe: mainly
based on requirements from
international initiatives (e.g. GEOGLAM)
• Forestry outside Europe: mainly based
on requirements from• GFOI
• regions with high risk for illegal logging
• Mostly cloudy tropical rainforests

Example of Land Cover application
UK map of crop classification 2015 based on Sentinel-1 data
« … coverage frequency compensates resolution… »
• Sentinel-1 has already proved to be a very relevant source of data
for agriculture monitoring, providing a very good accuracy for crop
classification (~ 90%, or better for certain classes)
• Sentinel-1A already routinely provides a full mapping of Europe
(EU/ESA/EEA-39):• Every 12 days both in ascending and descending orbits, in dual
polarisation VV+VH
• In practise, depending on latitudes / swath overlaps, more frequent
coverage is ensured in Europe
• Sentinel-1B will allow to increase this European coverage by a factor 2,
ie the S1 constellation will provide a full coverage at least every 6 days,
both in ascending and descending
• Relevant agriculture areas are regularly covered worldwide
• Global land coverage frequency will be increased in full operations
capacity, early 2017

The Sentinel-2 Color “Vision”
sentinels.copernicus.eu/web/sentinel/missions/sentinel-1/observation-scenario
• 13 spectral bands in the Visible
(VIS), Near Infrared (NIR), Short
Wave Infrared (SWIR)
• Ground pixel resolution of 10m,
20m, 60m (for atmospheric
correction) across a 290 km swathSPOT-5 117 km
Landsat-8 180 kmSentinel-2 290 km
Sentinel-2 Observation Scenario
Regularly published online in KML format at: https://sentinels.copernicus.eu/web/sentinel/missions/sentinel-2/acquisition-plans
Full capacity: 10-day revisit at the equator with one satellite, 5 days with two satellites (2-3 days at
mid-latitudes) Systematically all land surfaces (56° South latitude - 84° North latitude),
Current capacity: Europe, Africa & Greenland systematically on every orbit Rest of the world currently within 20 days, will be progressively reduced over the coming
months to reach 10 days.

Sentinel-2 mission outlook
1. Continued increase of data acquisition: 10 days revisit on all land masses is the goal before end 2016, using EDRS-A & 4th X-band station
2. Ease data access: MOVE TO SINGLE TILES concept (and other measures); possibility to download only a True Colour Image (RGB) ~summer 2016
3. Reprocessing of Commissioning Phase data by ~ Q3/2016
4. Feasibility study on surface reflectance (L2A) processing ->pre-operational pilot planned for summer 2016
5. Complete the constellation:…Sentinel-2B launch early 2017
ESA Data Hub provides an OPEN SOURCE Web interface
Users can set own scripts to automatically retrieve, filter
and download products
Sentinel Toolbox available as open source
software https://github.com/senbox-org
• All Sentinels acquired data are systematically downlinked and processed to generate the core products (For S1: L0, L1 GRD and L1 SLC and S2: L1C)
• ESA CSC data access is ensuring that all Sentinels core products are accessible to all usersonline
• Any user can self-register at https://scihub.copernicus.eu
• ESA delivers all Sentinel data on 24/7 basis as Near Real Time products (3 hours fromsensing) as well as Non Time Critical products (24 hours from sensing)
