“When the Fire Fell” Scripture: Acts 2:1-2:13

Summary: What happened on the day of Pentecost.

Understanding of why the Holy Spirit came.

1) The Holy Spirit came in fulfillment of a Promise. - Luke 24:49. 2) The Holy Spirit came to fulfill Prophecy. –Acts 2:1

There are in fact three fulfilled prophecies,

1. The feast of the Passover.

2. Offering of First Fruits. John 12: 24, 1 Corinthians 15:20

3. Pentecost – Feast of the Harvest. Fifty days after the feast of the first fruits (thus the name Pentecost meaning fifty) came the feast of the Harvest.

3) The Holy Spirit came to provide Power. Acts 1:8 and Luke 24:49

Three (3) things about the Holy Spirits Coming,

I. THE EVIDENCE OF HIS COMING 2:2-4

1. The Wind – A Miracle of Sound (v. 2)

2. The Fire - A Miracle of Sight (v. 3) 3. The Tongues – A Miracle of Speech (v. 4)

II. THE EFFECTS OF THE SPIRIT’S COMING vv. 5-11

The central feature of the experience was that the Spirit of God came upon the apostles in a new and dynamic way.

III. THE EXPLANATION OF HIS COMING vv. 12-13

Conclusion

a) Pentecost is a once-for-all event unique in redemptive history. b) The experience of the Filling of the Holy Spirit is in the NT a repeatable or a perpetual "state or condition" enjoyed by believers, and is always linked in Scripture

to the missionary enterprise, the Holy Spirit enabling Christians to bear witnesses of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the end of the Earth.
