Interfaith Caregivers of Polk County Coordinating volunteers to help seniors and

adults with disabilities maintain their independence

Spring 2019Spring 2019Spring 2019Spring 2019

Jerry Amundson Jerry Amundson Jerry Amundson Jerry Amundson lives in

Scandia, MN. He was

looking for a way to be

of service when he found

Interfaith Caregivers.

Jerry was the main

caregiver for his wife

until she passed a few

years ago. He continues his role as a caregiver

with the 4 regular clients that he drives for

Interfaith. He describes them all as being so

different, so interesting. He enjoys really getting

to know people and relishes the experiences he

has with each one.

Jerry grew up in Wisconsin, east of Amery. He

earned an engineering degree at the University of

Wisconsin. For many years, he worked as a

Shopping Center developer for Dayton's. His

favorite project was one that took him to Hawaii.

He talked about his bucket list, and two things

that he has already accomplished. “I wanted to

read the entire bible,” he admitted. “I learned so

much!” He also got to jump from an airplane last

year. He found the experience “exhilarating.”

Thank you, Jerry, for your time and miles spent “in

service” to the lucky people of Polk County.

Lyle Hopkins Lyle Hopkins Lyle Hopkins Lyle Hopkins has been a

farmer since retiring

from Northwest Electric.

He raises beef cows and

some corn and soybeans.

He farms the same land

that he grew up on out of

Milltown. One of his sons

“does most of the work” now, so Lyle started

looking for something else to do.

He started volunteering with Interfaith

Caregivers because he wanted to do something

for his community. He wanted to help people. “I

have more time than I do money,” he laughs.

I asked him if farmers ever really retire. “Yes!” he

joked. “When they end up next door at Rowe’s,”

referring to the Crematorium next door to us!

He has enjoyed an interesting cross-section of

personalities as a volunteer driver. He recalls one

client who is years younger than himself. The

man had multiple medical problems, one of them

being the need for dialysis three times a week.

“He was always so pleasant. And really thankful

for the help I gave him. It really puts my little

problems in perspective.”

Thanks, Lyle, for choosing Interfaith as your way

to help your community.

Thank you for giving 4,537 Rides!

*Don Getschel was a dedicated volunteer with

Interfaith Caregivers. He loved driving seniors and

the disabled. We created this award in his memory.

Our volunteer drivers drove more than 111,000 miles

in 2018. Thanks, in part, to Jerry and Lyle who have

been chosen as the recipients for our

2018 Don Getschel Volunteer Driver’s Award* !

Harold & Jean have been faithful

supporters of Interfaith

Caregivers since 2006. As

devoted volunteers, they have

done so much for Polk County

residents!

Volunteering is in their blood!

Before they moved back to

Wisconsin, they were volunteers

for a St. Paul neighborhood

organization that helped seniors with rides.

We can always count on Harold to drive folks

around Osceola. He used to drive people

further towards the cities, but nowadays he

stays a little closer to home. We can’t be exactly

sure of a total, but since 2012, Harold has

driven 4,164 miles for Interfaith. He’s given

554.5 hours of his time helping seniors and

disabled adults in and around

Osceola.

Jean, on the other hand, has

been an of;ice staple for us.

Early on she volunteered to help

with “anything but answering

phones.” She is really good with

numbers and data. She has

steadfastly worked on compiling

a list of potential donors in Polk

County. Since 2012, she’s given 4,542 hours of

her time to this project.

Jean has also been a member of the board off

and on for many years. She is threatening to

retire in April. (We’ll believe it when we see it!)

We can’t thank Harold and Jean enough for all

the hours and miles they’ve contributed to the

success of Interfaith Caregivers!
