Celebrate the holidays with your neighbors When? 4:30 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 12 How? Purchase luminary kits from the CCA, then set them up in front of your house and light them for everyone to see. (Purchase your kits with the order form on page 7.) Where? Place the luminaries along the side-walk, on the edge nearest the street.

Who? Everyone! The more neighbors who participate, the more amazing the night will be. What else? Please make every effort to keep your cars off the streets so the tours can get a great view of the luminaries. This date falls between the two leaf pick-up dates, as well, so please be careful not to place your luminaries near piles of leaves.

Light up Coopertown at Luminary Night On Saturday night, December 12, the neighborhood will glow with candlelight. Take it all in with our neighborhood car-riage ride tours, a Coopertown tradition. Tours will leave from Coopertown School every 20 min-utes from 4:30 to 8 p.m. While you wait for your ride, you can enjoy entertainment and a neighborhood holiday potluck. Please bring a dish to share, whether it’s an appetizer, entrée or dessert — we’ll supply the hot chocolate. economy is pinching eve-ryone’s budgets, including the CCA’s, but we want to make sure we give a gen-erous tip so they will re-turn next year! Please avoid parking in the parking lot section closest to the cafeteria door, so that we can be as efficient as possible when loading and unload-ing the vehicles. If the weather looks

Halloween Party 4 issues of the Scoop Carriage rides during Luminary Night In addition, our funds also go to much, much more, such as the development and upkeep of the CCA Web site, our e-mail capabilities, this year's landscaping in the new roundabout on Deer and Stockton, as well as giving back to the surrounding community just outside our streets. Just this year we have donated $150 to the Oakmont Volunteer Fire Department, which relies solely on the contributions of the surrounding community each year to survive. We also donated $250 to the Freedom Playground that we will all be able to enjoy at the Haverford Reserve. Coopertown is a community where neighbors help neighbors, and this is no more transparent than at our events that the volunteers make come to life! I hope you all see and feel that your contributions are being used ap-propriately and ask that if you all have ANY questions or suggestions, please feel free to come by our monthly CCA meetings or send me an e-mail with your ideas. With your help and financial support, let's make 2010 bigger, better and even more fun! Tom Doherty Treasurer

Treasurer's Corner: Where does your money go? It’s almost November, which means the holidays are fast approaching. I wanted to take a moment to reflect on what the CCA has done and give perspective to all the wonderful things our dues pay for throughout the year. I feel it is very important for the members of any commu-nity to have a better understanding of where their contri-butions go and why it's important to contribute each year. In line with this past year's economic downturn, we did see a drop in CCA dues, bringing in only $4,500, which was far below the over $6,700 in contributions we re-ceived just two years ago. I know you all know the won-derful events we put on for the community each year, but to show the laundry list really brings home the value of your relatively small contribution. CCA NEWS

CCA News The CCA thanks Elizabeth Durso for her dedicated ser-vice in maintaining our Web page. As she steps down, we’re pleased to welcome Biff Sturla of Clemson Road as our new Webmaster. Biff has professional experience de-signing Web pages and we know he’ll do a great job with ours. If you have any ideas for the CCA page, please con-tact Biff at [email protected]. The CCA is offering yet another way to stay connected and stay informed: Facebook! Sign on to Facebook, then search for "Coopertown Civic Association" and click to join the group. We'll keep a list of events and anything else that seems useful (suggestions welcome). Contact Pat Biswanger at [email protected] with ideas. Please help us keep the neighborhood looking nice. If an event has already passed, please remove any remaining signs you see. Thanks! Roundabout Update: The roundabout at Stockton and Deer roads has been completed, and the CCA has installed and will maintain its landscaping. The roundabout at Lee

& Gaynor will be completed as early in the spring of 2010 as possible, says Township Manager Larry Gentile. This one has been delayed by AQUA improvements and the upcom-ing leaf collection program, which will occupy all of the public works staff this fall. Chris and Christine Emmert want to convey their deep appreciation to CCA members for your generous fundrais-ing efforts for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation over the past year. Their daughter, Julia, has CF. She’s pictured here sporting her favorite CCA T-shirt, one of the fundraisers for the CFF this year. If you’d like to buy a shirt, contact [email protected].

OUR COMMUNITY

It’s time again for leaf recycling. Haverford Township will pick up leaves in our area of the Fifth Ward according to the following schedule: November 12 December 9 December 16 Please have your leaves ready for pickup on the earliest date dedicated for your area. The schedule is subject to change due to inclement weather. Signs will be posted the day before the pick up and the day of the pick up. Please do not put any leaves onto the roads. Leaves on the roads make the road slippery, clog storm sewers and could make for dangerous situations. If you are elderly or disabled and you need help with your leaves – or if you know someone who does – please contact Jeff Heilmann at [email protected] or 215-356-9737 (cell).

Neighborhood News & Notes Yael and Evan Foster of Rodney Circle welcomed a baby girl into the world on August 31. Leah Naomi Foster weighed 8 lbs., 3 oz.

Going Green by Monica Whitcomb I’m just as concerned about the environment as the next guy. (Okay, maybe just a tad bit more.) I truly believe that with very little effort, we can work together to help reverse the damage we have done to this earth and our environ-ment. I am by no means an expert on the topic of global warming, air pollution, ozone depletion, etc. But I do my re-search and certainly practice what I preach. In every issue of the SCOOP I am going to offer simple techniques to help us, the residents of Coopertown, go a little greener. How to go Green: Your Car & You About 20% of all greenhouse gases come from cars and light trucks, contributing to climate change, pollution and dis-ease. The good news is that there are many things you can do to make your driving life greener. If buying a hybrid isn’t in your future, try these techniques for simple solutions: -Increase your MPG by practicing green driving. This means avoiding sudden starts and stops and going the speed limit. Not only does speeding and herky-jerky driving kill your MPG, it’s dangerous. Try to "smooth" your driving by coasting when possible and accelerating and decelerating gradually. -Take it easy on the AC and heat. Park your car in a sunny spot during the colder months and in the shade during warmer months. This means it takes less to cool it off/heat it up when you get back in the car. -Turn off your engine and stop idling. If you don't, you'll just be wasting gas and polluting the environment. And if you're used to starting up your car and letting it idle five or 10 minutes before driving off in the morning, you can forget about that too. The fact is, cars these days don't need to be warmed up. Except in below-zero conditions, you can just start the engine and drive off. -Walk (or bike) – don’t drive! With little cost, leaving your car at home can pay huge dividends in bettering your health and reducing traffic. Can’t find a safe route without the car? Lobby the local government to increase spending on side-walks and bike lanes.

Serve a Little Love is lucky to have two Girl Scout troops volunteering for meal assembly on Friday, November 20. That means all we need from you is food! Please con-tribute entrees, side dishes, dinner rolls and dessert for the trays. In this difficult economy, it’s harder than ever for sen-iors in our community to make ends meet. Help us pro-vide healthy meals at this annual event. Please bring food to the Coopertown School cafeteria at 6 p.m. Call Jan Baffa at 610-717-7215 if you’d like to arrange earlier drop-off. Build up your appetite at Turkey Trot

Join your Coopertown neighbors on Thanksgiving morning for a fun 5K run. The Turkey Trot begins at the Coopertown School play-ground at 8:30 a.m. and will end back at the school with coffee, doughnuts and hot chocolate. We hope to see you there! For more information, call Anne Reilly at (610) 519-

Give holiday wishes and a helping hand Since the 1970s, Coopertown residents have enjoyed giving back to members of the neighborhood community through the Holiday Card program. The Coopertown Civic Association donates the pro-ceeds from the program to one or two families who are experiencing financial need this holiday season. Recipi-ents are kept confidential. The Holiday Card program makes it easy for you to send holiday wishes to everyone in the community. We’ll
