also augur an interest ratehike by the Federal Reserve. “I

can’t say when, and I don’t thinkthere will be multiple rate hikes,”he says. His current recommen-dation for income investors: Fi-delity Strategic Dividend andIncome (FSDIX), which keepsabout half its assets in dividend-paying stocks, with the rest in real

estate investment trusts, conver-tible bonds and preferred stocks.“It’s able to get a lot of strategicmaneuverability,” he says. Thefund currently yields 2.66%, ac-cording to Morningstar.

His favorite Fidelity fund for2015: Fidelity Event-Driven Op-portunities (FARNX), a small (forFidelity) $165 million fund.“What I love is that the manager,Arvind Navaratnam, is focused onthings like reorganizations, man-agement changes and companiesdeleted from their indexes for noother reason than the index com-mittee thought it was a goodidea,” Lowell says. “He huntsaround the edges of indexes, which is a good playing field foractive managers.” The fund hasgained 9.23% the past 12 months,vs. 7.8% for the average midcapblend fund.

Wiener, editor of The Indepen-dent Adviser for Vanguard Inves-tors, is also optimistic about 2015.“The economy has moved fromrecovery to expansion,” Wienersays. Employment is growing, butnot as fast as normal — and inpart, that’s because of technology.“We should have snapped backharder than we did, but in thenew economy we’re in, we don’tneed as many people to do asmany things,” he says.

Wiener says that when you buyan actively managed fund, you’rebuying management, and the bestmanagers at Vanguard run thePrimecap funds. Those, unfortu-nately, are closed to new inves-tors. But you can buy thePrimecap Odyssey Stock fund(POSKX) and the Primecap Od-yssey Growth fund (POGRX) di-rectly from Primecap. Both havehandily beaten the S&P 500 thepast decade.

Like Lowell, Wiener likeshealth care, and thinks VanguardHealth Care (VGHCX) is a strongbuy for long-term investors. “I

Wondering which mutualfunds to buy in 2015? USA TO-DAY asked two longtime fundpickers exactly that question. JimLowell, editor of Fidelity Investor, has been following the fund behe-moth for decades. Dan Wiener, editor of The Independent Adviserfor Vanguard Investors, is theleading expert on the ValleyForge, Pa.-based fund giant.

Lowell thinks the stockmarket has prospects forreasonable gains — 7% to12%, provided the U.S. con-sumer remains healthy.“Wage growth is going to bethe litmus test for the eco-nomic recovery,” he says. Ris-ing wages will give a boost toconsumer confidence and theeconomy.

Currently, his model portfoliosare overweighted in technology, because he thinks businesses willstart spending on technologyagain, the first major splurgesince 2007. He’s boosting techthrough his position in FidelityBlue Chip Growth (FBGRX),which has 33% of its assets intech.

His portfolio is also overweightin health care — “Even thoughI’m not unaware that it’s had aspectacular couple of years.” Forhealth care exposure, he’s usingFidelity Select Health Care(FSPHX).

An improving economy would

don’t care that it had a great yearlast year,” Wiener says. “If youbuy it now you’ll thank your luckystars in 10 years.”

His final pick for 2015: Van-guard Dividend Growth(VDIGX). The fund doesn’t lookfor stocks of companies that payhigh dividends, but ones with agood record of raising dividends.A company that raises its divi-dend is confident that it will be

able to pay that dividend in thefuture, since cutting dividends issheer poison on Wall Street. Oneof its main attractions: It tends tooutperform in bear markets. “Ifyou look at its record since (man-ager) Donald Kilbride took over,it has decimated Vanguard TotalStock Index,” Wiener says. Van-guard Total Stock is the largestfund in Vanguard’s considerablearsenal.

Paging Dr. House. Backstrom is not the first —

and won’t be the last — TV seriesto embrace the template thatgave Fox a hit in House: The arro-gant, irascible, self-and-other-loathing, personally flawed butprofessionally brilliant protago-

nist. In House he wasa doctor; in theshort-lived Rake hewas a lawyer; and inBackstrom he’s a detective — butthey’re all variations

on the same theme. In terms of the initial impres-

sion it creates, Backstrom is notHouse, but that’s not the crucialissue. The problem is that RainnWilson is not Hugh Laurie.

To be fair, this series fromBones’ Hart Hanson, adaptedfrom a series of Swedish myster-ies, is asking a lot of Wilson.Backstrom has all of House’s

flaws without any of his wound-ed-warrior saving graces: He’s aconceited, misanthropic, homo-phobic, racist, rude, overweight, alcoholic slob. Laurie brought aboyish charm to House and a sex-ual magnetism that helped ex-plain why people would at leastinitially choose to be around himdespite his problems; Backstromis just one o-putting character-istic on top of another.

Unfortunately, rather thandraw us in to the character, Wil-son pushes us away. The perfor-mance isn’t just charmless; it’soverly defined and over-emphat-ic. There are many momentswhen you feel you’re watching anactor make choices rather thanwatching a character simply be.

And to make matters worse, early on, anyway, he’s saddledwith this intuitive “I’m you” ap-proach to crime solving in whichhe puts himself in someone else’splace. It’s intriguing once, but it

soon begins to feel like a lazy wayaround the hard work of plantingand discovering clues.

We don’t have to like a maincharacter. But we do have to beinterested enough to invest our

weekly time in him or her, andodds are that only Wilson’s devot-ed fans will survive that make-or-break point.

The shame is that Hanson hasotherwise given Fox the samekind of solid entertainment hehas provided in Bones. The struc-ture is flexible enough to handle avariety of cases, and the support-ing characters are distinctive andwell-cast enough to handle theirown stories. Any show with Den-nis Haysbert as a preacher andon-the-side detective starts outon the plus side in my TV ledger, and this one adds good work fromGenevieve Angelson, KristoerPolaha and, as Backstrom’s gayroommate, Thomas Dekker.

They might be worth watchingif the show sheds a few gimmicks. And Wilson might be worthwatching in another show, if hisstyle works for you. But togetherin Backstrom? Sorry, but no.
