CHIEF EXECUTIVE OF NATION TO ESTABLISH OFFICES IN SUPERIOR

The date when President Coolidge will come to Wisconsin is still undecided but it will probably be soon after June 11, it was said at the white house.

President Calvin Coolidge will spend his summer vacation on the Cedar Is-land lodge home of Henry Clay Pierce,

it was stated Thursday by the Associated Press.

Information that the president would come to the Brule for his vacation and would undoubtedly establish his offices in Superior came like a bombshell to Upper Wisconsin and Superior. There was abso-lutely no inkling that Coolidge was even considering the Brule this year, although he did consider it last year and decided to summer at the Black Hills.

The estate surrounding the summer white house comprises several thousand acres mostly wooded but the actual living quar-ters of the president will be situated on a small island little more than an acre in area reached from the mainland by a narrow footbridge.

The living quarters on the island con-sist of a one-story bungalow of white birch bark and comprising eight bedrooms. The dining room kitchen and servants’ quar-ters are in a corresponding bungalow on the mainland at the opposite end of the footbridge.

Altitude 1,000 Feet. The estate is at an approximate alti-

tude of 1,000 feet. It commended itself to Mr. Coolidge, it is understood, for the good fishing that is reported in the Brule river. In addition, the temperature is cool, thus meeting another of the require-ments for a summer presidential residence.

The summer white house will be situated in Douglas County and therefore near the Canadian border. Its selection was unex-

pected here because the impression pre-vailed that Mr. Coolidge desired this summer to go to New England.

A survey of residences offered him, however, showed Cedar Island lodge to be the one to offer the greatest oppor-tunities for amusement and change from Mr. Coolidge’s capital activities. His pleasant experiences last summer in the Black Hills of South Dakota were under-stood to have influenced him to make a trip Westward.

Superior Headquarters. The daily routine of President

Coolidge at Cedar Island lodge promises to be very similar to that followed all last summer in South Dakota. Superior will take the place of Rapid City to which Mr. Coolidge will have to motor whenever any business is to be trans-acted.

Wonderful StreamFish abound in the Brule river, which

is called one of the best trout streams in Wisconsin. The president will have many opportunties to fish either in the stream or in the nearby lakes. Brook trout, speckled trout, rainbows and steelheads are found in the Brule and to catch 10-pound rainbows or steel-heads is not uncommon.

The estate has a private station on the line of the Duluth, South Shore and Atlantic Railway. The president may get to the twin ports in slightly more than an hour over 34 miles of good roads.

The following story is reprinted in part, with permission from the Superior Evening Telegram, (now the Superior Telegram) dated Thursday May 31 1928. It has been reproduced authentically in content and style, including puctuations and capitalizations.
