PREMIERES THURSDAY, AUGUST 24 AT 9PM
F orget swimsuit season and all the diets that go along with it. August is busting out all over with cookies, cakes, pies, puddings, and delectable desserts when The Great British Baking Show returns for a fourth season on WLIW21.
Known as much for its perfect “scrummy” patisseries as for its “soggy bottom” failures, the baking competition show—enormously popular both in England and the U.S.—serves up 10 mouthwatering episodes Fridays at 8 p.m., beginning August 4. The series follows 12 amateur bakers from diverse backgrounds in their quest to be named Britain’s best.
In each episode, contestants compete in a Signature Bake, which tests their creative flair and baking ability; a Technical Bake, in which challengers receive basic recipes with ingredient lists and minimal instruction; and the Showstopper Bake, designed to display depth of skill and talent.
Contestants will again be judged by Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood, two icons of British baking. Comedy duo Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc, the series hosts, bring humor, support, naughtiness, and baking puns galore to the iconic white tent where the contestants work their culinary miracles—and sometimes failures—as they whisk, knead, ice, roll, beat, and bake creations including Yorkshire pudding, flower-themed cakes, and Tudor-inspired masterpieces.
In the heat of the competition—and the heat of the kitchen—anything can happen. Mary Berry sums it up perfectly.
“Twelve new bakers,” she says. “I’m expecting the unexpected.”
The Farthest—Voyager in Space tells the captivating tales of the people and events behind one of humanity’s greatest achievements in exploration: NASA’s Voyager mission, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this month. The twin spacecraft—each with less computing power than a cell phone—used slingshot trajectories to visit Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. They sent back unprecedented images and data that revolutionized our understanding of the outer planets and their many moons.
Still going strong four decades after launch, each spacecraft carries an iconic golden record with greetings, music and images from Earth; a gift for any aliens that might one day find it, a literal record of our existence that may outlive us all.
