    International Wine Competition, Ensenada, Tierra del Vino (CIETVO)

    2015 Application

    Definitions The XXII International Wine Competition, Ensenada, Tierra del Vino, organized by the Universidad Autnoma de Baja California, and held at the Escuela de Enologa y Gastronoma, will take place from the 19th to the 21th of June 2015. The International Wine Competition, Ensenada, Tierra del Vino (CIETVO) is an international event where wine products will be evaluated by a specialized group of judges, in order to deliver an award based on the definitions of the international code of oenological practices. Mission of the CIETVO The International Wine Competition, Ensenada, Tierra del Vino is one of the outlets through which the Universidad Autnoma de Baja California promotes wine culture, as well as Mexicos regional and national wine production. It is through the use of information and communication technologies that UABC both evaluates the contesting wines and fosters their internationalization. Vision of the CIETVO Because of the institutional and transparent values of the Universidad Autnoma de Baja Californias Escuela de Enologa y Gastronoma, its International Wine Competition, Ensenada, Tierra del Vino becomes a beacon of worldwide promotion of wine culture and Mexican wines, especially those produced in the Baja California region. Objective of the CIETVO The objective of the International Wine Competition, Ensenada, Tierra del Vino is to promote wine culture, as well as Mexicos regional and national wine production on an international level, within an institutional, academic and absolutely transparent atmosphere. Article 1: Products able to participate Red-grape and white-grape wine products will be able to participate in the following categories: White wines (still, Petillants and Sparkling wines ) Ros wines (still, Petillants and Sparkling wines ) Red wines (still, Petillants and Sparkling wines ) Wines must be made according to the definitions in the international code of oenological practices, and may be presented by commercializing companies and national and international producers. Producers are those who transform grapes or must into wine, or make wine to obtain the characteristics established by its country of origin.

    Article 2: Exclusions Wines that have won an award in previous editions of the CIETVO wont be able to participate unless theyre of a different variety, year and characteristics. Wines presented by producers that have been accused of fraud or adulterations wont be able to participate.

    Article 3: Application and delivery of samples

    1. Applicants must register online at: http://concursodelvino.ens.uabc.mx 2. Samples will be received at the Escuela de Enologa y Gastronoma only if theyre accompanied

    by their proof of online registration. 3. International samples with their corresponding proof of online registration will be received at

    the following address:

    4. Samples must have their corresponding certificates of analysis, specifying the name of the participating company and wine, as well as the following data:

    a. Alcoholic strength by volume at content at 20 Centigrade (vol %) b. Residual Sugar (g/l) c. Total acidity (g/l) d. Sulphur dioxide (SO2) total (mg/l) e. Volatile Acidity (g/l) f. To petillants and sparkling wines, pressure bottle (atm)

    The CIETVOs organizing committee reserves the right to run tests on participating samples when necessary, in order to insure that the information provided on the certificates of analysis matches the characteristics of its samples. If discrepancies are found, the organizing committee will nullify the obtained grade and award.

    5. Fees a. Registration of samples (labels) will have a fee of:

    i. 1 to 3 samples 60.00USD ea. ii. 4 to 10 samples 50.00 USD ea. iii. More of 10 samples 40.00 USD ea.

    b. Samples sent with postage charge will be rejected.

    6. Each sample will be made up of four (4) .750-liter bottles; these must be perfectly packaged, labeled and delivered in one (1) parcel to the Escuela de Enologa y Gastronoma of the Universidad Autnoma de Baja California, according to the following schemes:

    Article 4: Sample conservation a. From their reception to their tasting, the organizing committee will safeguard the

    samples. b. To guarantee sample anonymity, a random identification code will be assigned to each

    one. c. A Main Judge will be named by the organizing committee; he will be responsible for the

    coordination of the CIETVOs distinct stages. Article 5: Naming of the judges The organoleptic appreciation of samples will be done by national and international judges, chosen by the organizing committee. Chosen judges will be knowledgeable about tasting techniques and will prove to be experienced in the field of wine tasting.

    Once the judges have been named, they will be summoned to training sessions where they will be taught how to use the CIETVOs computerized system, used during the identification of organoleptic data. As well, grading criteria for samples will be discussed, explained and fine-tuned during these sessions.

    Article 6: Organization of the tasting session

    a. Wines will be evaluated by the judges on a session-by-session basis, following the order established by the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV): Tasting will be

    organized in a successive, homogeneous series of samples, based on the following categories and criteria: Geographic Origin; Variety; Vintage; Sugar Content; wood. These series will be examined in a rational order, according to the categories established in the Article 1 of this application.

    b. The Main Judge will be responsible for the integration of the tasting panels their number will be defined according to the quantity and nature of the presented wines. Tasting panels will be put together intuitu personae, which means members can only be replaced by the Main Judge.

    c. Absolute anonymity is a fundamental principle of the CIETVO, which is why the judges wont know the identity of the tasted wines throughout the competitions course.

    d. Judges will convene in a tasting room with proper lighting and a neutral atmosphere, free of sensory pollution. Access to the tasting room will be restricted; only authorized personnel with proper identification will be allowed inside. The rooms temperature will be kept at 20-24 degrees Celsius. Judges wont be able to use cellphones during the evaluation of participating wines.

    e. A sample room will be set up next to the tasting room, as well as out of the judges sight, in order to open bottles and prepare samples under the same criteria of neutrality observed in the tasting room.

    f. A random code will be assigned to each bottle; they will then be covered up to the neck, allowing anonymity and proper serving of the wine.

    Wine presentation: Each wine will be presented individually, not comparatively.

    Article 7: Naming of winners Samples of each category will win awards according to the following table:

    The total number of medals, given to the samples with the highest scores, wont surpass 40% of the total number of participating samples.

    Results will be given at the end of the CIETVO and will be published on UABCs official website, as well as major newspapers, two days later. Results of awarded wines will be published in specialized magazines this will take no longer than one month after the CIETVOs conclusion.

    Article 8: Responsibilities of the organizers Organizers decline any responsibility for: Samples not arriving in time because of delivery delays; total or partial loss of samples during delivery; chemical or physical alterations of samples because of thermal excursions; ruptures or other anomalies suffered during delivery. This will not give the company the right to recuperate its registration fee which is why delivery is made by the company at its own risk and peril. Rejected samples wont be returned. The Universidad Autnoma de Baja California and the Escuela de Enologa y Gastronoma decline any responsibility for what winners decide to do with their awards especially using them as a resource for false advertising of their products.
