Buyers guide
In the last decades, due to the growing use of electronic devices for the management and control of the most common energetic processes and productive in the different sectors of electrical user, the sensitivity of these to the 'noise' of the power supply has increased significantly. The disturbance of electricity supply include both electrical transient events that stationary widespread such as: short and long breaks, microinterruptions and voltage holes, overvoltage and overcurrent impulsive, harmonics and imbalances of current and voltage, flicker, etc. The effects of these disturbances may also affect significantly, in severe cases, the correct operation of the plant components to temporarily impair the normal process of energy or production process concerned. The sensitive sectors to these problems are many: in the IT sector (Data Centers, Server, Telecommunication Systems) to the tertiary sector (cash register of a supermarket and lighting systems) to the industrial users (production units, automated systems or security systems). The simplest and efficient system for way to counteract disturbances in the electricity network is to install an uninterruptible power supply (UPS, from the english Uninterruptible Power Supply). Interface between the power source and the load, the UPS guarantees the continuity and quality of the electricity supplied to the
Uninterruptible power supplies
Voltage drop:A voltage drop is a decrease of voltage amplitude for a time rang-ing from 10ms to 1s. The voltage variation is expressed in per-centage of the nominal voltage between 10 and 100%. A voltage drop of 100% that lasts more than 1 second is called black-out and is typically produced by network problems at high voltage; the voltage drops that last less than 1s are called micro-interrup-tions and may be caused by transient faults.
Consequences: The microinterruptions are sufficient to cause blocking of loads with loss of data and possible failure of the year in the case of complex systems. In industrial applications events may instead cause loss of synchronism of the motors, opening of contactors or switching off the discharge lamps with consequent aging of the same and ignition only after several minutes.
Peaks and transients: Transient phenomenon are constituted by overvoltages very high and fast up to 20 kV. These transients are mainly due to lightning or faults on the high voltage grid, or the switching of loads highly capacitive or inductive.
Consequences: These perturbations are the most dangerous be-cause they cause the destruction of all the equipment not sufficiently protected (melting of wires, perforation of isolation, tripping of protective devices).
Overvoltage: An overvoltage is a voltage increase for a time greater than 10 ms. Power surges can be induced by the disconnection of heavy loads (interruption of production processes of industries) decrease in speed of the electric motors or by natural events such as lightning.
Consequences: These perturbations are among the most dan-gerous because it can cause permanent damage to all electrical/electronic equipment: damage to power supplies, computer/server lighting systems

Buyers guide
To cope with these situations of danger resulting from the perturbation of the electrical network the most reliable solution consists in the use of uninterruptible static groups which in turn be divided into two categories with increasing degree of protection: Line Intercative (VI) and On -Line Double Conversion (VFI).
Types of static groups
The Line-Interactive groups, in the normal operation mode supplying the load from the network through a stabilizing circuit AVR (Auto Voltage Regulator). This device corrects variations of the network within its regula-tory capacity. When disruption of the network beyond the limits of stabilization of the AVR the load is supplied via inverter that uses the energy stored in batteries. The transition from network stabilized to in-verter supply occurs within 5-10 ms with possible problems for critical loads that require interruptions void.

Rectier Inverter
The uninterruptible On-line Double Conversion Groups feeding in a continuous way the load via the inverter and the input stage Rec-tifier / PFC which ensures sinusoidal absorption PF 1. When the power comes from the values tolerated by the PFC stage the group will switch to battery operation, with the last from power inverter to power the loads connected. The operat-ing time for battery operation is instantaneous (0 ms) ensuring maximum protection for any type of load.
In case of failure of the stage Rectifier or the stage Inverter or even in event of overload the unit goes into operation from By-pass excluding electronics and ensuring uninterrupted power to the connected loads. The operation by the bypass may also be forced manually to make interventions of ordinary and extraordinary maintenance on the battery pack or on the electronic circuits of conversion.

Recommended security
An important aspect for the operation of a static group involves the correct dimensioning of the electric system upstream and down-stream of the same in order to ensure the protection according to the safety rules and the right operational conditions. Below is the rec-ommended for sizing circuit breakers and cable cross-sections of input and output from different models of UPS the following warnings: • Circuit breakers located upstream of the plant must be of type A or B with a delay of more than 0.1 seconds and the current differ-ential greater than or equal to 300 mA.• All models SOLO and TRIO UPS are NEUTRAL THROUGH and MUST HAVE THE REFERENCE OF NEUTRAL INPUT

Operating mode
As required by the standard CEI 50171 the supply systems should be able to work in different ways prescribed in the design phase as follows:
Supply system for lighting systemne
1. Method without interruption (SA)In this type of the load operation it is continuously fed from the system through an inverter, both in the presence and in the absenceof network. This method allows to feed all types of loads ensuring a zero interruption time (also called the SA mode Always Powered).
2. Method with switchingThe second typology is that of the way with switching. In this case, the load is continuously and directly powered from the mains and,in case of its absence, it has a battery from feeding through a switching device said ATSD (automatic switching device). This may even create discontinuities of some milliseconds. This operating method offers the advantage of higher yield, since in normaloperation (therefore in the presence network) part of the electronics (the inverter) is not powered. The disadvantage is that theswitching time in the moment of power failure. This condition is not always compatible with the loads to be powered.
3. Method with switching and additional device operating for the central load transferA third type is the way with switching and supplementary device operating for the central load transfer. In this case a device is providedwhich allows the power to the load only in emergency conditions (also called SE, Emergency Only). The maneuver takes place throughone or more devices called SCD (Switch Control Device), of switching devices. To it is given the the task of connecting the load tobypass by supplying energy in the presence of failures or inverters in case of power failure.
4. Method only Emergency (SE)A fourth type, very similar to the third way is the only Emergency. In this case a device is provided which allows the power of the loadonly in mains failure conditions (too 'it is called SE, Emergency Only). The maneuver takes place through one or more devices calledCSD (Control Switch Device), switching devices and the load is powered by an inverter using the energy stored in the batteries.
5. Method with switching and additional device operating for the partial load transfer (SA+SE)The fifth operating mode is the one with switching and additional operating device for the partial load transfer. The CSS provides twooutputs, one always powered through the network and one powered only in the absence of the latter (the classic SA+SE). he systemis recommended for the power supply of loads that need to continuously dispose of ordinary power supply (such as, for example, thecomputer equipment or sensitive loads) and loads that must be fed only in the absence of the network, for example, alerts for theescape routes.

Applications
Flexibility and total control over digital products has allowed Ram-Batt line to develop in the same sizes of the UPS lines a range of electronic stabilizersand static converters mono-phase UNIVAR or Three-phase TRIVAR in power rating from 3.000 to 40.000 VA with superior performance forparticular applications in test laboratories / approval and using aerospace or naval.
Electronic Voltage StabilizersDerived from static UPS, were developed electronic stabilizers SOLO and TRIO availables in sizes from 3.000 and 40.000 VA in mono-phase version220/230 V or three-phase 380/400 V. The working logic is robust and simple and provides accurate and effective adjustment in double conversion modeor Economy mode without the use of batteries, but only to a DC voltage buffer. The stabilization speed is immediate and the acceptance range is wide: 180-276 V single-phase and three-phase 315-470 V with solutions very light, compact and reliable since no moving parts to wear out.
Frequency convertersA typical application is the use of these converters to take advantage of the possibility to modulate the output frequency with high precision from 45 to400 Hz in order to aim in steps of Hz and with high accuracy (100 ppm) using a quartz oscillator and digital control using DSP.An important characteristic of these products is the multiplicity of control instruments for the frequency setting that can be managed from control panel, through analog signal 0-10 V or with a special software used with most common operating systems. The digital control system also offers the possibility to have high power converters in the same compact dimensions and weights of the UPS reducedthanks to the non-use of a transformer.
Voltage RegulatorsWith the same philosophy of frequency converters are available voltage regulators with range of 24-250 Vac phase voltage in steps of 1 V and 1%accuracy. With internal autotransformer are also realized regulators with output voltage greater than 240 Vac of phase per test of magnetics componentsor engine tests that guarantee high starting current. Thanks to this wide versatility of operation it is possible to use the converters as interface betweenAmerican network (110 V - 60 Hz) and European network (230V - 50 Hz) or as a simple current static stabilizers in combination with generator sets forloads that require a high power quality.
AutomationThe range of frequency and voltage converters can be controlled and managed through custom software for the most common operating systems, it canbe inserted into a control network through an SNMP agent or managed with LABVIEW libraries to create an automated system.

Communication and control
A UPS, alone, is not able to guarantee the total protection of computer systems that feeds due to several factors, including:
• The batteries in its possession do not have an unlimited autonomy.• Accidental connections such as heaters and vacuum cleaners can cause an overload, ifthere is no power, invalidate the protection provided by the UPS.• The installation in unattended areas such as data centers, or the h24 operation, may makeit difficult or impossible to receiving the alarms that, consequently, puts at risk the safetyof critical equipment.
The Ram-Batt products have been designed to communicate efficiently with monitoringsystems in order to protect from such drawbacks. There are basically two connection modes:locally through a monitoring software or remotely using Ethernet interface to supervisemultiple locations simultaneously.
Local monitoringTo protect a single computer (server or workstation) and its peripheral devices simply usean RS232 connection or USB and install the software on the system to be protected. Inthis case you can view using special software the electrical quantities of realtime operation(voltages, currents, load percentages and batteries) and a historian of the key statisticaldata (working time, blackout events, anomalies, average percentage of load, etc ...).Through the same software you can then set the main system operating parameters, as wellas prepare for shut-down procedures programmed for all common operating environments. Also from local using the AS400 communication cards dry contacts will be possible tointerface with systems equipped with such standard or otherwise reset the alarms orabnormal operation to a monitoring center using the relay dry contacts.
Remot monitoringFor the most complete protection or multiple systems simultaneously, you can use adedicated network interface through SNMP agent by connecting directly to the LAN 10/100network. In this method of control they are still available graphical interfaces for real-timeoperating control regarding voltage, current, percentage of load and battery status. Withnetwork interface, however, it is available also a number of network services which monitorH24 remote systems and to be promptly informed in case of alarm or malfunction betweenEmail services or Pop services. In this way it is also possible if you have a remote access tothe network to check the status of the machines in real time, set programmed actions (suchas switching on or switching off) and download the main histories of the various machinesoperating.
