CONVERGENCE AND SYNERGYAPPLIED TO FILM
CONVERGENCE: ATTACK THE BLOCK
CGI + LIVE ACTION
Attack the block has the perfect mixture of live action and CGI monsters. Using a combination of techniques makes the film a lot more flexible to produce. Creating a whole film with CGI alone can be very expensive, also if the quality of the CGI is not great it can give off an amateur impression.
SYNERGY: ATTACK THE BLOCK
ADVERTISEMENTS/PUBLICITY
- A “hub” of online media advertisements including Facebook advertisements encouraging people to “defend their blocks”.
- Worked with magazines such as “Live magazine” which is an urban London magazine, this is perfect for the target audience.
- Worked with radio stations to build a tone for the movie.
CONVERGENCE: SUPER 8
- Super 8 used a combination of professional cameras and old film cameras, this gives the film a very realistic effect
- A mixture of CGI and models were used for effects
SYNERGY: SUPER 8
ADVERTISEMENTS/PUBLICITY
- TV
- Online hub of advertisements (youtube/facebook)
- CINEMA
- Product placement
A COMPARISON
The biggest difference between the two films is budget, this can effect everything. Attack the block is a low budget British film so it had less money to advertise on multiple platforms, whereas Super 8 is a high budget film that could advertise massively. In super 8 the aliens are done with mostly CGI because they can afford to do that, however in attack the block they had to use a combination of puppets/models and CGI to achieve a professional standard.
BENEFITS OF CONVERGENCE IN FILM
Using a combination of techniques it vital when producing a professional film.
Without using a variation of techniques you cannot achieve the standards people expect with cinema today.
BENEFITS OF SYNERGY IN FILM
Without advertising the film industry would not make enough money to survive.
Using a combination of advertising techniques is key if you want to reach a wide audience.
