Big prayers in small placesDee and I recently had the privilege of celebrating the 160th anniversary of our longest-standing Converge congregation, Houston Baptist Church, in the southeast corner of Minnesota. As we drove through the rolling hills and beside green fields, we could imagine the eight Swedish families who immigrated there together so many years ago. The descendants of these early pioneers gave sacrificially, mortgaging their homes and farms to construct the church facility that to this day still is used to bring the good news of the gospel. So many other congregations pass through a typical life cycle leading from birth to death. We wondered how this church sustained vital ministry for 160 years. We found one answer early in our visit, when conversations with leaders turned quickly to the vital importance of prayer in the life of the church. Mark Batterson, author of the book Circle Maker, will speak at our Biennial Meeting in October 2014. In his book, he employed the example of the Israelites circling Jericho for seven days, bringing the walls tumbling down and making a way into the Promised Land. He wrote, “Drawing prayer circles starts with identifying your Jericho. You’ve got to define the promises God wants you to stake claim to, the miracles God wants you to believe for and the dreams God wants you to pursue. Then you need to keep circling until God gives you what he wants and he wills. That’s the goal.” As you see the faces of these dear servants in this edition, ask the Holy Spirit to show you how to pray for each one. Then pray with confidence that God hears your prayers and will show his power at work in their lives, families and ministries. Thank you for your faithful intercession.
