Accident in Japan – Greek Actions
We express our sympathy to the Japan Government and population
The Greek government through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Greek
Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC) has issued the following
recommendations:
• Travel to Japan is not advised.
• As a precautionary measure, Greek citizens within a 80 km zone from the
Fukushima nuclear power plant are advised to move out of the area. The
same recommendation has been addressed to Greek ships.
• Greek citizens and Greek ships’ crew members have been advised to follow
the instructions of local authorities.
CNS 5th Review Meeting, Vienna, 4-14 April 2011
Accident in Japan – Greek Actions
Airplanes
• There are no direct flights from Japan to Greece. However, the option of
passengers screening upon arrival from Japan has been provided on a
voluntary basis in two airports (Athens and Thessaloniki) from 18 to 26
March 2011.
• Thyroid uptake and whole body counting are performed in GAEC, if proven
necessary from the screening.
• GAEC laboratories are available to persons coming from Japan, wishing to
be monitored.
56 passengers have been monitored. Low concentrations of radioactivity
were detected in the personal belongings of 2 persons. In these cases
thyroid uptake and whole body measurements were performed. Iodine in
low concentration has been detected, resulting in extremely low doses.
CNS 5th Review Meeting, Vienna, 4-14 April 2011
Accident in Japan – Greek Actions
Environmental Monitoring
• Telemetric network for monitoring total-gamma dose in air (24 stations) and
aerosols (3 stations), on-line with GAEC web-site and EURDEP
• High volume sampler measurements
• Activation of the network of collaborating laboratories for performing
sampling and measurements
• Measurements are continuously performed in environmental samples (air
filters, rain water, grass, milk, water)
• The telemetric network has not detected increased levels of radioactivity

Accident in Japan – Greek Actions
Ships• For ships coming from the Pacific Ocean (in general) no provisions are
considered necessary.
• For ships coming from the affected area, the possibility of performing
measurements for surface contamination mainly on the containers carried
by open-top ships is under consideration.
• Whole body and thyroid uptake measurements can be performed on a
voluntary basis to the crew members returning from the affected area.
Food and feeding stuff importFollowing the relevant EC Recommendation, radioactivity measurements are
performed in food and feeding stuff imported from Japan.
