Hi Everyone,
My parents used to say, “wait until you get older and see
how time flies”. Not that I’m getting older but time does
fly and I see what they meant. What happened to July and
August? It seems like it was just May and I was planting,
going to greenhouses and nurseries, and now its mid- Oc-
tober and I’m preparing for what's ahead.
I hope everyone had a great summer and growing season.
In my area of the province, May & June started out to be
the ideal growing season; timely rains, warm evenings
and most days were sunny and bright. Then the middle of
July the rains stopped and the wind started blowing, some
days from every direction. Rain barrels were empty, gar-
dens full of branches, so my evenings changed from re-
laxing to picking up twigs and branches that had blown
down.
This summer, Neepawa had its first encounter with the
dreaded lily beetle. I didn’t have any at home but some of
the lily beds in town had some damage done to them. The
first ones I found were on some plants in the legion me-
morial garden, so, I spread the word around town that the
“beetles had arrived” and that people needed to be vigi-
lant and check their lilies at least once a day and kill any
adults that they found. One lady had some on just one
clump of lilies. She used a solution of nicotine and water,
she soaked cigarette butts in boiling water and let them
steep, then strained off the butts and diluted the liquid
with water and sprayed the plants, she also worked the
butts into the soil around the plants. She sprayed the
plants twice a week, and feels that she conquered them, at
least for this summer. (something you might like to try)
The 2017 convention is fast approaching. Thanks so
much to the Killarney & District Horticultural Society for
stepping up to take on the job of hosting the convention. I
know they will do a great job. So keep January 26, 27 &
28 open, you won’t regret going to Killarney.
I hope everyone has a great fall and gets all those fall
chores done before the snow flies. Don’t forget to pick up
some of the Canada 150 Tulips - they are red & white -
perhaps a grouping of the tulips could be photographed
and entered in the Print Competition.
See you in Killarney
Brent

The Manitoba Horticultural Association has served Manitoba gardeners and communities since 1895. It has provided sup-
port, direction and educational programs and materials to garden clubs. Our annual convention is a truly excellent forum
for gardeners to get together for learning. We continue to provide education programs for horticultural judges, to support
educational programs for clubs through the Weir Memorial Fund, and to recognize exceptional achievement in horticul-
ture for our region through the Stevenson Memorial awards.
In recent years the clubs that make up the MHA have had a decline in membership. In addition, a number of clubs have
either folded or withdrawn from the larger organization. This leaves us in a position where we need to consider options to
keep the MHA financially viable. Your board of directors has been wrestling with this situation for the last 2 years in par-
ticular.
We've considered a number of options. With a deficit in 2016 of over $6,000 and a projected deficit of over $4,000 in
2017, we need to take strong action to bring our budget back to a balanced position. Ideally, we would like to grow the
membership of the organization and with a good long term strategy and your help, we hope to do that. In order to pursue
this long term strategy we need to increase our revenue to narrow the gap in our budget and bring it closer to balance. To
do this we propose:
To approach the Weir Memorial fund to provide additional funds to support our
educational program at the convention.......................................................$1175.00
Increase club membership fee from $80 to $120 .........................................$680.00
Increase per member fee from $4 to $5 .......................................................$797.00
Increase insurance cost from $40 to $50 .....................................................$170.00
The net result of these changes would reduce the projected deficit for 2016/17 from approximately $4,000 to $1,200.
These changes would cost an average of $2 per individual member. This additional cost will preserve your very favour-
able insurance program and the well received educational programs.
We suggest that clubs discuss this proposal with their membership so that voting delegates are prepared to vote on it at the
convention and annual meeting.
Thank you

In his newest book, Mark Cullen talks about gardening in the context of our
life situations and promotes the positive impact of gardening on our lives.
Whether it's producing food, protecting biodiversity , or getting together with
neighbours to grow vegetables in a community garden, he provides valuable
advice which promotes a holistic approach to gardening.
In his final chapter, Mark speaks of gardening as a vehicle for learning. Gar-
dening not only promotes learning for children of all ages and adults but as an
activity, it builds a connection between parents and children. We learn about
growing food, our connection to nature, the rewards of patience and the
"value of the gardening experience".
The garden provides a rich and varied outdoor playground and the benefits of gardening extend to people
throughout life. Mark outlines many projects which will enhance the experience.
The down to earth advice and easy to read prose will make this book interesting to new gardeners and those
with a wealth of experience. It is beautifully illustrated with colour photos throughout and a variety of plans
and charts. Could you benefit from a list of vegetables for raised bed and container gardens, a list of nectar
plants to attract butterflies, bees and hummingbirds to the garden or a suggestion of rules for a community gar-
den? Anyone interested in gardening will find valuable information in this book.

Agassiz Garden Club
In October a Thunderchild Flowering Crab and a
White Spruce were planted in Memorial Park in Lac
du Bonnet to honour the memory of long time Agassiz
Garden Club member, Grace Hrychany. Trees are a
very fitting memorial for our dear friend who so en-
joyed the natural beauty of Eastern Manitoba.
Agassiz Garden Club is already getting prepared for
the Canada 150 and the RM of Lac du Bonnet 100
birthday celebrations. Our flower show booklet
which is in production now will feature red and white
as the colours of the year. We intend to put on a spec-
tacular show in 2017. We are also working on a
theme for our Centennial Float for Canada Day pa-
rade. We look forward to hearing about other clubs'
plans for this year of festivities.
Transcona Garden Club - Celebrates Canada's Sesquicentennial
Our kickoff to Canada's 150th Celebration
has begun with the presentation of a mixture
of five red and white tulip bulbs to each per-
son who renews their membership or joins
the Club for 2017. Five more red and white
tulip bulbs were presented to each exhibitor
who had 5 or more entries displayed in our
Summer Show held at Kildonan Place last
August. Another 5 bulbs were gifted to the
Club's 50th Facebook member. Five more
bulbs were given to each home owner who
opened their gates for our “Hidden Gems of
Transcona” Garden Tour held last July. More
bulbs were handed out as door prizes at the
October meeting.
The expectation is that, first thing next
Spring, the tulip bulbs will result in splashes
of red and white in the front gardens of these
worthy members. But they must be planted now in order to set their roots and pro-
duce the bursts of patriotic colour in the Spring.

Hello Everyone,
We were victims of
Gate Night this year.
One of the three planters that
the Transcona Garden Club
purchased for the front and
side of the Transcona
Museum was vandalised on
Sunday. It is unfortunate that
people don't understand that,
what appears to be an
innocent prank turns out to
be costly and a major
inconvenience to the victim.

Former President of the Manitoba Horticultural Association, Louise Page was
recently honored by the City of Winnipeg by having a park named after her, Louise
Page Park. The park is situated near the corner of Dowling Avenue West and Day
Street in Transcona. The honour is aptly bestowed upon Louise for her numerous acts
of generosity as a volunteer to the community throughout her lifetime. To name some
highlights – President and Regional Representative for MHA; Executive and long time
member of the Transcona Garden Club, and Manitoba Table Tennis Association;
Transcona Memorial United Church; Transcona Food Bank; Age & Opportunity
Centre; Operation Christmas Child; Christmas Cheer Board; Transcona Hi-Neighbour
Festival; Breast Cancer fundraising; Rotary Club International; Feed My Lambs Street
Mission Program; Park Manor Personal Care Home plus assistance to many individuals
on an ‘as needed’ basis. Louise is our “Go To Person” whenever there is a job to be
done. Congratulations Louise!
