With regards to conversational competence, controlled activities allow students to develop confidence as well as the ability to participate in and maintain simple, commonly encountered conversations. There are a variety of ways that teachers can give students the opportunity to use English language in a safe and undemanding environment. To promote such conversational activities, the teacher can make use of all kinds of resources - flashcards, study boards, multimedia, information strips, as well as pictures/prompts. Directions: Rotate through the series of learning centers that have been set-up. With a classmate, do the controlled activity and consider the following: appropriate level (beginner, elementary, elementary and above, intermediate, advanced, any); appropriate time needed to do the activity; aim/purpose of the activity; and how it can be enhanced/modified.
