Introduction OverviewA light hearted romantic adventure in the mold ofmovies such as "Romancing the Stone" or "Raiders ofthe Lost Ark", Heart of China (HoC) is far removedfrom the standard fantasy or sci-fi plots of mostcomputer games. Instead, HoC was designed to takeyou on a whirlwind, globe-spanning adventure thatcaptures the flavor and romance of exotic locationsand characters. To achieve this goal we had toaccomplish both technical and design breakthroughs.

There were two main issues on the technical side thatB JeffTunnell aTe wort^ noting- First was the addition of a Story

Branch alert that signals when you've taken a pathwayin the story that could have been approached from a different direction. This wasan important addition to the adventure because it allows you to actually see themultiple plot paths in the game. Rise of the Dragon, HoC 's predecessor, also hadmultiple storybranches but the feedback we received told us that most peoplewere unaware that these different pathways existed. With the Story Branch alert, you'll immediately know when you've tried something that could have been doneanother way. Also on the technical side was the artwork. It was decided veryearly on that we would use a combination of live actors and realistic, handpainted backgrounds to achieve the rich "period" feel of the game. However, combining the photographed actors with the painted backgrounds turned out tobe much harder than we had originally anticipated. Total reworking of theartwork was required on two separate occasions to get it just right. Despite all ofthe difficulties encountered, I think the resulting "film quality" look was worth theeffort.

Along with the technical advances made in HoC, exploring the chemistrybetween three very interesting characters was a top priority. Friendships andromance develop over the course of the entire game, with the romance betweenLucky and Kate being the focal point and an intriguing "buddy" interactiondeveloping between Lucky and his ninja partner, Chi. HoC's sidekick system(allowing interaction between three main characters) was essential to thisprocess of fostering believable characters and emotional attachment. Thesidekick system is a powerful feature that will be a critical element in futureDynamix adventure games.

Finally, I would like to thank the huge team that brought the HoC vision to life.Taking a look at the enormous list of credits gives you an idea of just how manypeople devoted their time and energy to this project. It's their hard workcombined with Sierra's patience and support that have made this adventure areality.

Welcome to Heart of China, the second game to usethe new Dynamix Game Development System(DGDS). As you are about to discover, the world ofJake Masters is unlike anything you've seen incomputer gaming. Because of this, it's importantthat you understand the elements that make Heart ofChina so unique.

The characters have character...The characters in Heart of China all havepersonalities and a past... it's important to rememberthis when you deal with them. Also, just like realpeople, they remember things that you've said ordone to them. Keep this in mind because everythingyou say and do will affect their actions in the future.

Time clicks on...Time passes in the world of Jake Masters. Thismeans that, just like in the real world, things happenwith or without you. It also means that the passageof time becomes a factor in everything you do.

You are the main characters...Heart of China unfolds almost entirely through theeyes and minds of three main characters. What theysee you see. What they know you know. There's alot of information locked away in the minds of theseindividuals. Each one has different skills andknowledge... leam to use them.

What you see is what you get...In Heart of China, you don't type commands tomake things happen. You enter Jake Master's worldand physically make things do what you want themto do. This is one of the most revolutionary conceptsof the game. Through the use of a point-and-clickinterface, you actually pick up objects and usethem. Want to start a tank? Simply pick up the keys, place them in the ignition and turn the key. It'ssimple yet incredibly powerful. The point-and-clickcommands are fully explained in the followingpages. Mastery of the basic techniques takes onlymoments, after which you can begin to explore, leam and grow in your interactive abilities.

HOWDIDYOCI DO?

The best possibleending to the game isto make it to Paris, safely delivering Kate

, to her father's waiting. arms. If you've done

everything right.Lomax will give youall of your aeroplanesback, S125.000 plusa $20,000 bonus, anew car, an allexpense paid trip toMonte Carlo and freemeals at ail of hisrestaurants.

?lot BranchesOne of the most unique, and potentiallyoverlooked, elements of Heart of China is themultiple ways in which you can proceed throughgame play. These multiple "plot paths" arepresent because the interactive storyline of Heartof China is MOT LINEAR in design. There areoften several ways to proceed into the storywhen faced with a puzzle or obstacle. It'simportant to remember that your actions affectthe flow and direction of the adventure you areplaying... you truly "interact" with the game. There are several entirely different endingsto the story. The ending that you experience, and the paths you take to reach that ending, are completely dependent upon the actionsand decisions that you make throughoutgameplay.

Plot Branch AlertBecause of the numerous options that plot pathspresent, it's important that you're aware whenyou've chosen a story pathway that could havebeen approached from a different direction. That's why the Plot Branch alert is used. It willappear at any point in the adventure whenyou've chosen a path that could have beenapproached in a different way. The Plot Branch

alert won't tell you what you've done that couldbe done differently, it only alerts you to the factthat you have bypassed a potential piece of thestory. Also, keep in mind that the Plot Branch

alert does not tell you if the choice you madewas the best one, it simply indicates that therewas another plot path available for you toproceed down. Remember this if you findyourself at a point in the adventure that appearsto be a dead end. If you are absolutely "stuck,"you may have ventured down a plot path thatmakes it impossible to successfully completeyour mission.

Romance MeterYour actions and choices willnot only determine the physicaflow of the storyline but therelationship between KateLomax and "Lucky" Jake Masters. To see how you're doing in theromance department, you can access a

Romance Meter (a small heart located in thelower left-hand corner of the screen during flightsequences) which visually displays KateLomax's current feelings toward Lucky. Thereare three stages to the meter: Passionate,Neutral and Cold. By left clicking on the icon, you'll be able to see a story panel that displays, through thought boxes, the feelings that the twocharacters have for one another.

IMPORTANT!Keep a watch on the Romance Meter! You maysolve all of the game's puzzles correctly andstill not get the optimal ending sequence ifKate and Lucky aren't nose-to-nose comeParis.

The Romance Meter isvisible on/y from theFlight Screen. LeftClicking on the hearticon wil l display a storypanel which showsLucky and Kate in flightwith thought boxes thatconvey their currentfeelings for one another.

if you're one of thosedie-hard gameplayers !hat likes toexplore a game onyour own, it'srecommended thatyou at least readabout the Game Saveand Restore features. This information islocated in the VCRMenu section on page28.

GSING OBJECTS THAT A CHARACTER ISCARRYINGTo USE objects that a character is carrying, simply click and hold the right mouse button. The on-screen cursor will change to indicate thatthe specific object being held has been selectedfor GSE. When the object is selected for CJSE, itcan be OPERATED in the same way as otherobjects in the game.

There will be times when the character's handcan be used as an object. When the player usesa character's hand (holding no other objects) inthis way, the cursor will change to display ahand (see pg. 13).

That's it. You can now look at objects, move them and operate them. You can alsoselect and use objects that a character iscarrying.Very simple, very easy, low-stress interaction. On the following pages are more tips andtechniques that will help you understand theinteraction techniques used in Heart of China.Elements such as inventory use, talking withother characters, game play options and morein-depth use of the cursor are explained.

The Smart Cursor"Hey! My cursor keeps changing!"Yes, that's right. The cursor you know and lovechanges in DGDS games when moved overcertain items. That's because it's smart andwants to tell you something about what it'spointing at.

In addition to pointing in different directions, thecursor will, at times, completely change shapeto inform you about items, places or people youshould pay attention to. We've taken the libertyof interpreting this language of cursor-ease foryou:

• When the cursor changesto an exit sign it's telling youthat by left clicking on thisspot you can enter another

| When the cursor changesto a pointed exit it's differenti-ating between two closelyplaced, but different, exits.

| If the cursor changes to aconversation bubble, youcan (eft click to engage in aconversation with the personthe cursor is pointing at

| If the cursor changes to amagnifying glass, it's yourcue that you can left click to"zoom in" and get a closerlook at what the cursor ispointing at.

| In some situations thecursor will change to a handicon. This tells you that thecharacter may engage inhand-to-hand contact withthe items on-screen.

THE EXTRA-SPECIALWAfflCON

In; addition to thenormal gamepiaycursor icons, you willsoon becomefamiliar with DGDS'ssignal that if sthinking - the WaitIcon. The cursor wiilchange to the WaitIcon whenever thegarne needs toaccess informationfrom disk or 'ispreparing a surprise.

Character Interaction"Character interaction," or talking to othercharacters, is a vital part of Heart of China. Theon-screen cursor will change to the talk bubblewhen it is moved over characters that you cantalk to. To engage in conversation withcharacters, simply left, click on them when thetalk bubble is active.

1. When the on-screencursor is placed over acharacter you can talkto, the cursor will changeto a talk bubble. Left, clicking will initiate aconversation.

2. Hot ail of thecharacter's will /iaceclose-ups. This isgenerally the case with"minor" characters andthose who are posi-tioned very close to yourcharacter when talking.

3. When anothercharacter asks aquestion, two or morechoices will bepresented for you tochoose from. Eachchoice generates adifferent response fromthe character.1 Be prepared to domore than talk whenentering into aconversation. Giving upItems front yourinventory whileengaged in conversationis a frequent occurrence.

Always remember -the characters you'llencounter think andact like real people. They remembereverything you'vesaid, done and triedto do to them,..

BeyondBs Advanced Techniques

Here are a few tips and hints that will be helpfulonce you've mastered the basics.

TIMEIn Heart of China, time is an ever-presentcompanion. People come and go, changemoods and respond to the passage of time, justas people in the real world do. Also, you mustremember that each day that Lucky delays inrescuing Kate he loses $20,000 dollars. Thismeans that if you make a mistake and have towait around to correct it... it's going to cost you!

Each day you delay in completing your mission costs youmoney! These non- interactive screens showing your money"flying away" will help to remind you that the clock is alwaysticking.

Advanced TechniquesINVENTORY AND OBJECTSAlways remember that objects can be draggeddirectly from the Quick Inventory window to thegame environment. If you need to give an objectto another character or use an object frominventory on an object in the current room, simply mouethe object from Quick Inventory tothe place desired.

1. Objects can bemoved directly fromQuick Inventory windowto the current room.Simply moL'ethe objectoutside the inventorywindow. The inventorywindow will disappearwhen the object is clearof the window bound-

2. Once the object isclear of the Quickinventory window (andthe window disappears)you can move and dropthe object whereverdesired, in this case, thecoins are being droppecinto Lucky's inventory.

3. When objects aredropped onto a screenwhere they cannot beused or did not originate, they will fall to thebottom of the screen.Objects left in f/iisposition may or may notbe around if you leaveand come back. If youleaoe them in Uiesti-eetor some other "hightraffic" area, odds arethey'll disappear intosomeone else's pocket.

1. THOUGHT BOXShown when a characterhas a persona]comment about whatyou are looking at.Thought Boxes giveinsight into each of themain characters andvaluable clues on gameplay.

2. DESCRIPTION BOXOffers text descriptionsof whatever you arelooking at.

CHARACTER INTERACTIONThe display duration for dialogue boxes shownduring character interaction can be controlled intwo ways.

1. The operate command ( l e f t dick) willimmediately move you to the next dialogue box.

2. The TEXT SPEED settings in the VCR MENU(see Controls, pg. 26) section can be adjusted tospeed up or slow down the display duration of alldialogue boxes.

CURSOR ICONS AND LIMITED KNOWLEDGEGenerally speaking, the "smart cursor" in Heartof China will alert you to areas of interest bychanging the direction it points or by changingshape. However, there is a limitation to thecursor's intelligence. It can only tell you what thecontrolling character knows about. For instance,if you're trying to locate something hidden in aroom and Lucky doesn't know where the objectis, the cursor will not change to indicate the item.In some instances locating hidden objectsrequires the trial and error approach, using theOPERATE and LOOK commands to investigateareas where a character's knowledge is limited.

Meanwhile & StorySequencesHeart of China operates in a living environmentwhere events are happening all the time, whether you're present or not. When an event ofinterest occurs and you aren't there to witness it,a Meanwhile Screen will pop up introducing asequence that shows you what's occurring.

Meanwhile sequences are intended to conveyinformation that heightens the cinematicexperience of the story. It's important to notethat these sequences are not interactive, youcan't affect them, and the information given inthe sequences isn't known to your game alter-

I egos unlessthecharacter ispictured inthesequence. The fact thatcharacters

I aren'tknowledgeable of the events shown inmeanwhile sequences is important toremember. It means that their questions andresponses to other characters will only deal withelements that they are aware of.

^L The Meanwhile^ Screen will automa-tically pop up when anevent has occurredthat's important to knowabout. The MeanwhileScreen is followed by anon-interactivesequence showing theevent. These events arenot known to the ActiveCharacter or SecondaryCharacter, and they willnot react to theoccurrence until theypersonally discover theinformation.

Page 21: CONTROL DOCUMENTATION - Abandonia of China_Manual.pdf · Don Latarski Christopher Stevens Christopher Stevens Kenneth Rogers Forrest Walker Wayland Wasserman Chris Medinger Alan Roberts

12. Assuming younavigate the conversa-tions with Ho and thebar goons correctly, youwill find yourselfaddressing Zhao Chi.how you have toconvince him toaccompany you on yourperilous quest. After you getChi on board, head backto the street by leftclicking on the exit iconat the bottom of thescreen in Ho's bar.

Movethe cursor over the doorto her shop and left, dickon it (press spacebar) toenter.

15. Because MadamWu is slightly xenopho-bic, she won't talk toLucky at first. You willneed to switch betweenChi and Lucky tocomplete this conversa-tion. If you get throughthe conversationsuccessfully, Master Wuwill send you to getsome sea guil doo-dooto make a potion. Afteryou leave Wu's, left dickon the coolie to bring upthe travel menu. Select"Dock" from the menu.

16 Once you get to thedock you will need tochange characters toobtain what you need.To accomplish this, left, dick on the SecondaryCharacter icon at the leftside of the screen. Theinventory icon and theSecondary Charactericon will exchangeplaces (for moreinformation on changingcharacters and swap-ping items see page 15).
