Hi everyone,
Happy New Year! I hope you had a safe and happy Christmas / New Year break. 2014 is promising to be another great year and I look forward to sharing it with you. We’re kicking straight off with the new Babinda District 2014 Phone Book. It’s been 2 years since our last print
and my hope is to produce it annually. Please check that we have your correct details by going over the 2012 phone book. If you require any deletions/additions/changes they must be brought into the office by 24th January.
Everything going according to plan we should have our new phone book by March. In keeping the same as the last 2 phone books we will continue to charge just $2 per book. Members and advertisers will receive one free copy each. Congratulations to Mrs Finlay on winning the Taskforce Christmas Stocking Raffle and Mrs Abercrombie on
winning the 100 Board. Thank you to everyone who purchased a ticket thus supporting the Taskforce. I would like to welcome Danette Gatti to the Taskforce. Dani will be working out of the Taskforce Office on Wednesday afternoons offering her clothing alterations and repairs service. (see Dani’s advert)
Mark & Nicky from Gordonvale will be continuing their Mural Workshop on Wednesday afternoons (see article) Monday 7th February sees the return of the FREE Basic Computer, Literacy &Numeracy and Certificate III in Business Administration courses. (see articles)
By far the most popular service we offer remains to be Centrelink servicing over 100 customers during the 14.5 business days we were open in December. Please note: we are a Centrelink Agency equipped to facilitate Centrelink business such as photocopying/verifying documents, faxing documents to: Centrelink / Job Networks / prospective
employers etc. The Babinda Centrelink Agency has 2 phones, 1 fax/photocopier and 1 computer with internet access. All these are available free for use to all Centrelink benefit recipients. Jeanette Murgha and myself are Centrelink Agents and are able to assist customers up to a point: we are not contractually permitted to ring and/or
talk to Centrelink on a customers behalf: we are not permitted to register a customer on-line though we are able to guide customers (this is to encourage self sufficiency Please note: Next Taskforce Meeting scheduled for Thurs 23rd @ 9am. All 111 members are welcome to attend.
Be kind to each other,
Rachel

Babinda Police Report
Police News Jan 2014
Well 2014 is now upon us, and the Babinda Police family wish all the best for the New Year.
Christmas holidays saw us again attending Josephine falls along with Ambulance and Fire and Rescue per-
sonnel to assist with the rescue of a young person who thought it would be a great idea to flout the rules
and climb up to the top pool at Josephine, they then slipped on the rocks and fell down the water fall, injur-
ing themselves. This reckless act not only resulted in an injury but also took two police cars, two ambu-
lances, a fire truck and National Parks staff away from other important duties, a bit of care and abiding by
the rules would have saved a lot of trouble.
Recently we have had reports of bags being stolen from unlocked cars, whilst left unattended on the street.
The lock it or lose it campaign has been around for a while now and for good reason, often crimes happen
because the opportunity is there, we can all do our bit to reduce crime by taking away opportunity make
sure you lock up what is yours.
In 2014 we will continue in our efforts to keep our town a safe pleasant place to live. If you engage in anti
social behaviour expect to spend some time in the watch house. If you drink drive, unlicensed or drive an
unregistered car expect us to catch you and impound your vehicle. If you take or supply illicit drugs expect
us to knock on your door, seize your drugs and send you to court.
Can I remind you that 000 is only for emergencies, non urgent reports can be made to Police link on
131444 or at the station on 4067120.
If you have any information that may assist police you can call the station or crime stoppers on 1800 333
000, remember this can be anonymously. Many of you hold information vital in helping us in our efforts to
keep Babinda the fantastic place to live that it is. Call us.

Happy 2014 to all and I hope you had a safe and joyous Christmas period, enjoying the company of family
and catching up with close friends.
Last year seemed to fly by but it did see some significant progress in Babinda. The roof was erected at Bill Wakeham Park in time for the 50th Anniversary of the Babinda Harvest Festival. The land the mill stood
on was rezoned by Council and the majority of the demolition has been complete. The toilet block at
Rotary Park was complete and proved exceptionally popular with the RV crowd.
This year has started just as fast as last year and promises some great progression for Babinda as well. We
will see the complete remediation of the Mill site. It will be levelled, made safe and ready for development.
The Babinda pool is up for a $400k remediation - upgrades of plant, equipment and the concourse. Council
is also well underway in a plan for modernising the Babinda Boulders that includes an upgraded walking
path, larger swimming platform and new and safer viewing platforms. This will not necessarily be built this
year but the finalisation of the plans will have all the community involved.
For your personal goals for this year, I wish you well in your resolve. I will still aim to be at Babinda each
Friday, operating out of the Task Force office. If you wish to se me, make a time with Rachel or give me a
call or email direct.
Regards,
Steve

BIG THANK YOU
To Karen Lacey and all those lovely people who, with their kind money donations, helped me fund my trip to Sydney as a Finalist in The MusicOz Awards on the 7th November, representing Mark Richards and my video entry...The Babinda Town Song. I was very humbled by the total donation of nearly
$700.00, which covered the flight and other expenses to-ward me going to the event. Thank you, to all those Special people and their great messages of Thanks. I was very honoured to be there and represent Babinda.

Info Centre Illuminations
On behalf of the Centre we wish you a safe, happy and prosperous 2014 and hope you enjoyed the Festive
Season. It is encouraging to see that our free camping areas are still attracting visitors. The Boulders camp area has been full over the Festive Season, while Rotary Park has been well occupied too. Our Flattery and
Faults Feedback has been overall positive, with some constructive criticism such as installing a seat for the
elderly in the Rotary Park shower block. The vast majority give positive feedback about how friendly our
town is. Then other welcome comments like:
"So beautiful, Lovely lovely spot (sic). So many people had recommended Babinda to us. Thank you."
We have a new brochure holder for after-hours information that has been attached to the front door. It
contains a Boulders brochure with street map of Babinda with general information on the back, and our
local mud map showing local attractions.
As we are now fully into summer, remember to "slip, slop, slap". Many visitors do not realise the ferocity
of our tropical sun, only worrying about crocodiles and stingers at this time of year. The locals know better.
Until next time ...... Happy Trails

Babinda Pensioners
Welcome to the start of another year. Hope everyone had a great xmas
with family and friends and that 2014 brings good health and happiness
to all.
Over the coming months we could experience adverse weather conditions,
and by now everyone should have their emergency plan and kits in
place ,and homes prepared for what may come.
The Babinda Pensioners group is part of a state-wide organisation that
works with both State and Federal Governments to improve living
standards for pensioners in Qld. The Babinda branch also works with
Local Government and our local councillor Steve Brain, who in the past
has been very co-operative.
The Babinda branch meets on the 2nd Thursday of the month from Feb to
November. We meet at 9.30 am at the Spirit of Babinda Hall, most
meetings go for about 1 hour with light refreshments and a social chat
following.
New members are always welcome, but you don't need to be member to come
and voice any concerns you may have.
Our next meeting is on Thursday 13th Feb. It would be great to see some
new faces come along and express any concerns that they may have.

OFFENSIVE
As a local, I find it very offensive when I go into a
shop, only to be faced with the foul stench of cigarette
smell wafting around the shop, from owners sitting out
the back smoking, or from those rude, ignorant people
who sit out the front smoking. It’s truly rank people
and offensive for most of us non-smokers who just
want fresh air. That’s why we live here!! Please leave
your cigarettes home, no amount of air fresheners can
cover up the stench and its very unhealthy for us who
don’t smoke. Respect please and I’m sure it’s not the
best for business, nor your image!...... ANONYMOUS
A Mother’s Letter to the World
Dear Worlds:
My son starts school today. It’s going to be strange and new to him for while. And I wish you would sort of treat him gently. You see, up to now, he’s been king of the roost. He’s been boss of the back yard. I have always been around to repair his wounds, and to soothe his feelings.
But now-things are going to be different.
This morning, he’s going to walk down the front steps, wave his hand and start on his great adventure that will probably include wars and tragedy and sorrow.
To live his life in the world he has to live in will require faith and love and courage.
So, World, I wish you would sort of take him by his young hand and teach him the things he will have to know. Teach him –but gently, if you can. Teach him that for every scoundrel there is a hero; that for every crooked politician there us a dedicated leader; that for every enemy there is a friend. Teach him the wonders of books.
Give him quiet time to ponder the eternal mystery of birds in the sky, bees in the sun, and flowers on the green hill. Teach him it is far more honourable to fail than to cheat.
Teach him to have faith in his own ideas, even if everyone else tells him they are wrong. Teach him to sell his brawn and brains to the highest bidder, but never to put price on his heart and soul. Teach him to close his ears to a howling mob….and to stand and fight if he thinks he’s right.
Teach him gently, World, but don’t coddle him, because only the test of fire makes fine steel.
This is a big order, World, but see what you can do. He’s such a little fellow.

Saint Valentine's Day, also known as Valentine's Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, is
observed on February 14 each year. It is celebrated in many countries around the world,
although it remains a working day in most of them.
St. Valentine's Day began as a liturgical celebration of one or more early Christian saints
named Valentinus. The most popular martyrology associated with Saint Valentine was that
he was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and
for ministering to Christians, who were persecuted under the Roman Empire. During his
imprisonment, he is said to have healed the daughter of his jailer, Asterius. Legend states
that before his execution he wrote her a letter "from your Valentine" as a farewell. Today,
Saint Valentine's Day is an official feast day in the Anglican Communion as well as in the
Lutheran Church The Eastern Orthodox Church also celebrates Saint Valentine's Day, albeit
on July 6th and July 30th, the former date in honor of the Roman presbyter Saint Valentine,
and the latter date in honor of Hieromartyr Valentine, the Bishop of Interamna (modern
Terni). In Brazil, the Dia de São Valentim is recognized on June 12.
The day was first associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the
High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. In 18th-century England, it
evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting
flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as "valentines").
Valentine's Day symbols that are used today include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the
figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten valentines have given way
to mass-produced greeting cards

There are two main options available. Abbeyfield House provides a modern, affordable option for independent living. Where older people’s needs exceed those that can be provided at home or in independent living, the Babinda Multipurpose Health Service may be an option. Currently, 11 permanent residents call Babinda MPHS home. Safe, high quality care is provided. This includes specialist nursing and medical care, lifestyle activities and physical therapies. The demand for places is increasing.
Information on aged care at Babinda MPHS is available from Daniel Winters-McAppion,
MPHS Coordinator, on 40678206.
