National bestselling and Zola award-winning novelist and screenwriter

Grammar Refresher (1 session)It’s hard to remember back to middle school, but that’s probably when we learned about sentence fragments and run-ons, subject-verb agreement, and the proper use of commas, colons, and semi-colons. Leave with practical and easy to remember rules for checking and correcting sentences, verb agreement, commas, colons, and semi-colons.Tuesday Apr 28 12-1:30 p.m. $20COMM 9027A AT Bldg Rm 203

MOTORCYCLE RIDER TRAINING Whether you are a first-time rider, experienced rider or a returning rider, a Montana Motorcycle Rider Safety Rider-Course® will assist you to ride your best! This class will help you build confidence and develop and hone the skills you need to ride right – and ride safe.

Classes are taught on a controlled, off-street riding range where you can learn safely without having to worry about traffic. For novice and beginning riders, training motorcycles are provided; helmets are available if needed. The Flathead Valley sparkles with water, and sea kayaks provide boundless opportunities to enjoy it. The following courses are designed to equip beginning paddlers with the skills for this lifestyle sport. No paddling experience is presumed; all that the courses require is an ability to swim, pull yourself out of the pool at the deep end, and to bend your knees.

The courses use the American Canoe Association’s curriculum and utilize high-quality sea and recreational kayaks, which have sit-inside cockpits, closed bulkheads for flotation, and are best suited for lakes and oceans.

All boats and equipment are provided by the instructor for the Friday evening pool session as part of the course fee. For the Saturday and Sunday lake sessions, students are responsible for boat rental costs (approximately $30). Boats are available at a student discount at Rocky Mountain Outfitter or Sportsman Ski Haus, or from the instructor, who will secure and transport appropriate boats to the site for students on request. Anyone bringing a boat from another source MUST discuss boat make and model with instructor, as boats shorter than 12’, whitewater boats, and boats lacking flotation are not appropriate for these courses.

After registering, students will receive a resource packet with course details, including what to wear, what to bring, how to prepare. If you have questions, the instructor is available online and by phone.

Friday evening: Meet at the Summit pool from 5:30-8 p.m. We’ll first allay everyone’s greatest fear: That we’ll get STUCK if we go upside-down! You will put your boat in the warm water and learn how to get in, get out, fall out and get back in … in shallow and in deep water, all with aninstructor alongside. You will try the several ways that a solo kayaker can empty and re-enter a capsized boat in deep water, and in this discovery-learning process, find that it’s safer and a whole lot easier to paddle with a friend who can assist in the process.

Saturday or Sunday (your choice): Spend the day (10 a.m.-3 p.m.) at a calm area lake. Take part in ACA’s comprehensive, hands-on introduction to the sport. Learn how to get a boat on and off of a vehicle, carry it, and adjust the fit. Take part in warm up exercises and stretch paddling-specific muscles. Learn how to hold and use a paddle to perform basic strokes. You will go around obstacles until maneuvering becomes efficient, then enjoy a brief tour. You will be able to see intermediate and advanced skills demonstrated and ask questions about any aspect of kayaking. (Saturday classes are best for never-ever kayakers; Sunday classes, also fine for never-ever kayakers, will have an extra instructor dedicated to advanced beginners).

W.O.W. (Women on Water) ( 2 sessions)American Canoe Association’s “Quick Start Your Kayak” curriculum gives women of all ages an opportunity to try recreational sea kayaking in a supportive “girl party” atmosphere. It moves at a slow and nurturing pace, affording students the opportunity to overcome any issues about “tipping over” before moving to the lake to learn boat handling skills and enjoy touring.A) Friday & Saturday Jun 12 & Jun 13B) Friday & Sunday Jun 12 & Jun 14 EE 6008A, B $130

Introduction to Sea Kayaking (2 sessions)This beginning course follows American Canoe Association’s curriculum by the same name. It is suitable for men, women, partners and adventure friends who want to explore sea kayaking at its easiest, recreational level, as well as those who have some kayaking experience, perhapseven their own boat. Never-ever kayakers are encouraged to enroll in the Saturday class, while those with some experience are encouraged to enroll in the Sunday class. Depending on the composition of the Sunday class, you may be paired with Flathead Paddlers Club volunteers to accommodate different interests or ability levels.A) Friday & Saturday Jul 10 & Jul 11B) Friday & Sunday Jul 10 & Jul 12C) Friday & Saturday Aug 7 & Aug 8D) Friday & Saturday Aug 7 & Aug 9EE 6096A, B, C, D $130
