GOVERNOR GENERAL’S MESSAGE

I am so honored to serve as your Governor General. We have a lot of work to accomplish in a short time. As you know, our Society was forced to cancel our Annual Council due to the hurricane in South Carolina. Therefore, I will only be serving an eighteen (18) month term. My project will be Membership, Scholarship and support of Native American Schools. My scripture is “Honor others above yourselves.” Romans 12:10. My theme is bear. Bears are prominent in Native American Folklore. They are a symbol of strength and wisdom and are often associated with healing and medicine. And being from California what better theme?

I am thrilled to tell you about the Society’s plans. We have a new classification of membership. If you are a direct descendant of a Native American, you will be recognized with a certificate and the opportunity to purchase our new insignia teepee pin that can be worn on your official ribbon. We have always had thi designation but now you will be distinguished as a direct descendant!

We also have two new chairmanships – Awards and Social Media. The Awards Chairman will present awards as part of her report. So be sure to get your reports in to your National counterpart. We want you to receive an award for a job well done. The second new chairmanship is Social Media. We are launching a public and pri- vate Facebook page. This is very exciting as we will be able to post events from State and Chapter Societies to generate interest in membership.

Our Website Chairman Beverly Baker will be revamping our website. We will be posting forms, National and State Officer contact information, Bylaws etc. on the site. We will also have a new password protected members only site.

In addition, we are updating our Bylaws, Handbook and will also have a new Yearbook. They have not been updated for quite a while. Shelby Ward is our Bylaws Chairman with members Mary Armstrong and Nancy Kilbourn. They will be reviewing all the amendments that have been adopted to assure they are a part of our current Bylaws. Handbook Chairman, Rebecca Eisenman will be working on our Handbook. If you have served as a National Officer or Chairman and have suggestions for duties of your office or chairmanship, please contact Rebecca. Karon Jarrard is serving as our Yearbook Chairman. Please be sure to complete a Change of Membership form for any changes such as address, telephone number or email address. This form will be sent to myself, the Registrar General, Corresponding Secretary General and the Yearbook Chairman. If you have a death in your Society, please inform the Chaplain General.

Judy Hull is our new Calumet Editor. Please send photos and events that are happening in your State or Chapter. We all want to hear what everyone is doing. It gives us ideas for our meetings.

As I mentioned earlier, my project is to provide support to Native American schools with books or supplies. This is in addition to our two scholarships. For a $45 donation to this project, you will receive a smaller version of the walking bear pin National Officers wear. I hope you will consider donating to this project.

Again, we have a lot of work to accomplish in a short time and I look forward to working with all of you to give our Society a more prominent face and grow in membership. I am available with any questions or concerns by telephone, email or snail mail.

SPRING COUNCIL MEETING—MINUTES

Army Navy Club—Washington, DC

04 April 2019

The 2019 Annual Spring Council of the Continental Society Daughters of Indian Wars was called to order at 9:00 a.m.

by Governor General Ann William Garner at the Army-Navy Cub in Washington, DC. Chaplain General Betty Samaras gave the Invocation and the Opening Ritual was recited by all members.

Governor General Garner called for all officers reports and then for the report of the nominating committee which was given by Chairman Karen Hall. Nominations from the floor were called for by the Governor General, hearing none the

teller committee distributed ballots for voting. Governor General- Cher Sesma Corresponding Secretary-Mary Glenn

The election was held and the report of the teller committee reported the slate was unanimously elected. Adele Bowyer

elected as Chaplain. Ann Waggaman moved the ballots be destroyed. Pat Gallagher moved that Barbara Alison and Ann

Garner be removed from the bank accounts and Cheryl Sesma and Carol Steakly be added. New officers were installed and the new Governor took the chair and welcomed everyone and introduced your new offi-

cers. The peace pipe was passed around the room.

Adele Bowyer, Mary Glenn and Barbara Allison were appointed to review and approve the minutes of this meeting.

The minutes from April 2018 have been read and approved by committee, hearing no corrections minutes approved and will be filed.

Treasurer’s report was filed subject to financial review. Karen Hall moved that any bills presented be paid. Motioned second and adopted.

Budget for 2019-2020 was presented by treasurer and she moved for it to be approved. Motion was adopted.

Reports of officers were given if present. A gift was given to Ann Garner as outgoing Governor from her officers.

Reports of Chairmen were given.

Ora Jane Johnson was appointed as Assistant Registrar, Shelby Ward, Mary Armstrong and Nancy Kilbourne were ap-

pointed to the bylaw committee.

Motion made by Mary Armstrong that the bylaws be completely revised. Motion adopted.

Judy Hull will be publishing the newsletter. Plans to revise the website were discussed.

Reports of State Governors were given. Florida Society presented Governor Sesma with a gift. Governor Sesma’s scripture is Romans 12:10 and her theme is “Walking Bear”

We need a Scholarship pin Chairman, Membership Chairman and Protocol Chairman. Need help on Lineage books and a webmaster.

Annual council will be held in September in California Sept 19-21, 2019 April Board meeting will be held in April 2, 2020 at the Army-Navy Club in Washington, DC

Annual Council 2020 will be held in Nevada. Details will be forthcoming

Benediction and blessing of food given by Chaplain General.

OFFICERS—REPORTS

FIRST DEPUTY GOVERNOR GENERAL Cher Sesma

This officer has attended both the Annual Council in Richmond Virginia in September 2017 and the Board Meeting in

Washington, D.C. this past April. The description of the duties of the First Deputy Governor are to make herself avail-able to the Governor General, which she has done for the past two years. She has also made herself available to other

officers and members with any questions or problems.

In May, this officer was honored to travel to Murrieta, California, representing the Continental Society to install the officers of the Shalawa Meadows Chapter and also be their program speaker. This officer spoke on Native American

Folklore. In June, she was honored to travel to Ojai to attend the Malibu Creek Chapter meeting as outgoing Chapter Governor and to install the incoming officers. This meeting is held in conjunction with the Golden State Company

Jamestown Society and was hosted by Golden State member Gregg Garrison at his 3 acre home with a BBQ luncheon.

We were thrilled to introduce Mr. Garrison’s daughter Aurora as our new chapter member along with Elyssa Collier.

Mr. Garrison invited 15 different societies to this meeting which garnered interest in our society. Several ladies inquired about membership and requested applications.

In August, this officer traveled to Ontario for the California State Society meeting. Again this officer was honored to

install the incoming California State board. At this meeting, it was voted to donate $500 to the Virginia Avery Scholar-

ship which this officer wishes to present today. Madam Governor General, it has been my honor to serve as First Deputy Gov. Gen. of this society these past two years.

SECOND DEPUTY GOVERNOR GENERAL

Julia A. Farrigan

This officer has attended all Continental Society Meetings, State and Chapter Meetings. I have continued to record the application information for the Volume 3 Lineage Disc. Having just received the box of the last of this administration’s

applications I expect the project to be completed in August. At which time discs will be burned and for sale. It has been a pleasure to serve the society in this position.

RECORDING SECRETARY GENERAL Annette Edgeworth Smith

This Officer is grateful to have had the opportunity to serve the Continental Society Daughters of Indian Wars as your

Recording Secretary 2016-2018. This officer has recorded the minutes of the meetings of the Continental Society Daughters of Indian Wars and distrib-uted/emailed the minutes to the members. The reports of officers and chairmen were received and compiled. These re-

ports have been recorded and sent to Calumet Chairman for publishing.

This officer attended the Continental Spring Council at the Army-Navy Club in Washington, D.C. April 5, 2018. This

Officer also attended the National Fall Council in Richmond, VA on Thursday, September 16 through Saturday, Septem-ber 18, 2017.

This Officer has participated in the preserving and marking of historical sites. She has presented twenty-seven programs

for various heritage and educational groups during the past year. This is a good way to tell our heritage story.

This Officer has enjoyed serving the Continental Society as Secretary General for 2016-2018. It has been an honor to serve the Continental Society and the Garner administration.

RETISTRAR GENERAL Mary W. Glenn

This officer has been busy. There have been 193 new applications approved since the annual meeting September 2017. This report covers 18 months as the meeting due to hurricane conditions was cancelled September 2018. All applica-

tions have been digitized, members sent their Certificates, vital records returned and State Registrars sent their copy of applications. This officer has also sent all approved applications to Julia Farrigan to be placed in the archives in Atlanta,

GA. The database has been kept up to date and all appropriate officers notified of any action taken. I am pleased to re-port that during this time period there has been two State Societies organized. Each State Society had over 30 members

verified. All Supplementls were referred to the Supplemental Registrar General and all Member at Large applicants were referred

to the Member at Large Chairman or processed when sent to this officer. Transfers, resignations and deaths have been


reported to the appropriate officers. This officer is pleased to be of assistance to anyone inquiring of membership in our Society. In the course of this office,

she has processed numerous requests by sending them to the appropriate state Society. Thank you for the opportunity to

serve.

HISTORIAN GENERAL Helene Werner

This officer has been present during all scheduled meetings of the Society. During this administration, she represented

the Society during Illinois Heritage Alliance, Michigan Heritage Days and the Texas State Council. Reported events

during Governor General Garner’s term were compiled into a scrapbook and shipped to the Governor General. Your Historian General has enjoyed filling this position during this administration and it has been a pleasure to serve.

LIBRARIAN GENERAL Frances Becton Jakes

Financial contributions and books were made to Indian Libraries and Public Libraries. Members attempted to learn of local needs, responding and providing wherever possible. This included long-range planning and giving.

This officer answered inquiries from state librarians concerning their duties and responsibilities. Madam Governor General, it is an honor to serve.

This officer is grateful to you and all members for their cooperation and courtesies.

MEMBERS-AT-LARGE CHAIRMAN Kimberly O. Nagy, MD

The Continental Society currently has 45 members-at-large. Over the past year, 4 ladies have joined as members at large,

1 was reinstated, and 2 transferred out of their state society. On the down side, 1 lady was dropped for nonpayment, 1

resigned, 1 deceased and 1 transferred into a state society. Word must be getting out about our society as 23 ladies were referred for member-at-large membership this year and

information about the application process was sent to all. Four applications were received, reviewed, and sent on to the

Continental Registrar.

Dues notices were sent and all dues payments were forwarded on to the Continental Treasurer. One lady has not paid

despite three notices and was dropped. In response to the dues notice, 2 ladies became life members and $340 was re-ceived in donations. Of our 45 members-at-large, 30 are life members.

Appreciation is extended to membership chairman Lynda Moreau for all of the prospective member referrals, and to Registrar General Mary Glenn for all of her assistance.

It has been a pleasure to serve this society during your administration.

SCHOLARSHIPS CHAIRMAN Leslie Vander Meulen Richards

This chairman was pleased to receive 33 applications, up from 21 last year. Although there were some complications with some submissions due to applicants not following the directions carefully, no applications needed to be disqualified.

Applications were received from members of 17 different tribes and 16 states from Alaska to Washington State to New

York.

Our Society had sufficient funds this year to award one $5,000 scholarship and one for $2,500. Both winners were very deserving and the judges and this chairman believe they will go forth as valuable members of their tribes and the communities in which they serve.

This chairman was pleased to solicit several donations to the Scholarship Fund for which our feather and pony pins are

awarded.

Our thanks are deserved by our judges, Margaret Carr, M.S. Ed., a retired teacher living here in St. Louis, Kenneth McBride, Viet Nam Veteran, author, researcher and retired business executive also of suburban St. Louis and Jonathan

Richards, who holds a Bachelor’s degree in History from Harvard and is a retired businessman, also of suburban St.

Louis.

Our winner of the top scholarship this year was Germain Medina, Jr. of the Wyandotte Nation who will be going to

Cabrillo College this coming year to finish his nursing degree so that he can move on to Medical School. Our second

winner was Ms. Shurene Premo, a student at San Diego State University majoring in Social Work and American Indian Studies with plans to work with native Americans who are victims of the alcohol and drug epidemics currently experi-enced by many tribal members. She is a member of the Shoshone Paiute Tribes.

It has been a pleasure and honor, and a good learning experience, serving this chairmanship in the Garner administration.

STATE GOVERNORS—REPORTS

ALABAMA STATE SOCIETY Davie Thomas Williams, Governor

This State Governor began the year by being installed at the May 24th meeting in Anniston, Alabama. She set her goals

as increasing membership and education relative to the Indian Wars. The State Society gave a $200.00 donation to the National Scholarship Fund.

It has been a busy year for this Governor. She prepared and filed form 1023-EZ with the Internal Revenue Service to become a 501 (c) (3) which was granted on July 9, 2018. The remainder of the year she has been busy helping recruit

and preparing new members’ applications. Alabama Society has 14 new members during her first year as Governor and three applications ready to be sent into the new Registrar General. There are several applications being worked on by

prospective members at this time. At present, this Governor is assisting with the filling of the 990-PF. It is an honor to serve as Governor of the Alabama State Society.


ARKANSAS STATE SOCIETY Mary-Reid Warner, Governor

mary goals are to support Sequoyah National Research Center in Little Rock and Bacone College in Muskogee,

Oklahoma. Both center on Native Americans. Growing

membership is another important objective.

CALIFORNIA STATE SOCIETY Peggy Comstock, Governor

This officer is delighted to be here representing the State of California. We have three chapters in our state, Fort Ross Chapter in Northern California, Malibu Creek and Shalawa Meadow Chapters both in Southern California.

The State Society supports the National Governor’s project and the Wiyot Indian Tribe in Northern California.

The members of the California Society are very excited to be hosting the 2019 Continental Society Annual Council.

California normally holds their annual council in August. However, this year it will be held in September immediately preceding the National Council. It is hoped that the many events that are being planned will provide members with a

memorable visit to our state. The events will be held at the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, California. There is a free air-

port shuttle to the hotel from the Ontario, California airport.

Tentatively the program is as follows: Thursday September 19, California State Annual Council

Thursday night a Welcome Dinner at a restaurant in walking distance from the hotel

Friday a trip to San Juan Capistrano on an air conditioned mini bus, a docent let tour of the Mission, lunch at a cele-brated San Juan Capistrano restaurant and time for shopping before returning to Ontario. Friday night will be a Governor General sponsored event.

Saturday morning the Continental Society Council begins with a special lunch and exciting program being planned.

Saturday evening the Continental Society Council continues with a banquet where another special dinner and exciting

program are being planned. Sunday morning will conclude the planned events. Members will receive the DIW rate for up to three days before the 19th and three days after the 21st for those who would

like to see more of California while you are there. We look forward to seeing many of you there.

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA STATE SOCIETY Anne Caussin Henninger, Governor

The District of Columbia State Society continues to grow. Two members transferred in and three members were accepted into the Society, offsetting our losses due to relocation and mortality. This Governor has asked each member to

be on the lookout for potential candidates for membership with a view toward expanding our membership base.

The District of Columbia State Society meets once a year generally in mid to late August. At our last annual meeting in August 2018, our guest speaker gave a fascinating talk about the use of oral traditional and its history among members of

the Kiowa Tribe of Montana and Oklahoma. The District of Columbia State Society is proud of our member, Adele Bowyer, who has served the Continental Society

as Assistant Registrar General.


GEORGIA STATE SOCIETY Ann Bridges-Jones, Governor

It is my pleasure to report the activities of the Georgia State Society.

We had a successful State Meeting during which we elected Officers. We wish to thank Madam Governor General for

attending our meeting and installing the new officers. Our program was given by a member who told of her experiences as a nurse on the Navaho Reservation.

We continue to support the Scholarship fund and encourage all chapters to donate.

All Chapters continue to encourage new members. Coweta Chapter No. 1 will celebrate its twenty-fifth anniversary in

August.

We are honored to have two national officers from Georgia serve on the Executive Board and are especially honored to be the home state of our Honorary Governor General for life.

We look forward to a productive year and promoting the objects of the society.

ILLINOIS STATE SOCIETY Susan Erlick, Governor

The Illinois Society currently has 49 members. We meet three times a year, publish an annual yearbook, and with the change of officers at our September meeting, also include an Indian Minute, which is researched and read by member

Sunny Hayes. Last June, members and guests visited the Springbrook Nature Center in Itasca, IL. Raptors of all sizes were introduced,

and a program was given on what they eat, how they are taken care of after being injured, and what kinds of raptors lived

in the area while the Native Americans lived there.

The September meeting took place in East Peoria, IL during the 6th Annual IL Heritage Weekend. This involved joining with other hereditary societies from across the state to share information and to obtain new members. Copies of the na-tional pamphlet were passed out, members answered questions about our society, and our new slate of officers were in-

stalled. Our new state president is Susan Erlick. National Historian Helene Werner and Michigan State President Sue

Moritz were introduced.

A joint meeting with the John Kinzie Chapter, U.S. Daughters of 1812 and the Illinois State Society Dames of the Court of Honor brought members and guests together in Lockport, IL for the March meeting. Special guests included Dr.

Kimberly Nagy, CSDIW Continental Chairman of the Members at Large Committee and Leah Beckhoff, IL State Presi-

dent of the U.S. Daughters of 1812.

Getting the members to attend meetings has become a priority as can be seen by the attendance at September’s meeting,

where we had 30 of the 48 members in attendance and March’s meeting, which had 24 of the 49 members in attendance.

It is an honor to serve in your administration.

KANSAS STATE SOCIETY Lavone Anglen, Governor

Our Kansas chapter has twenty-three members. We lost two charter member’s, Pat Surber died December 2018 and Jean

Lightner died in April 2019. Pat was our former Registrar and Parliamentarian and B. Jean Lightner was our former Kansas Governor. Our present registrar, Laura Easley is working on current applications. We did have three new mem-

bers approved during 2018, the members were Jane Hurt, Charlotte Hoverder and Catherin Mercurio. We held our election in October 2018 using our colorful prayer sticks for our different offices. Our meeting was held

with the Kansas Henry Woodhouse Colonial Dames Seven-

teenth Century chapter. We usually do not meet together,

but this year our meetings fell on the same day with many of the same members. Our meeting was held at the Here-

ford House, in Shawnee, Kansas and our program was given by Tricia Spencer on “Colonial Hats”. Members were

asked to bring their colonial hats. A memorial was held for

Katherine Campbell who died September 2017. Lavone Anglen, Kansas Governor planned to attend the

Fall convention in Greenville, South Carolina with her hus-band, Paul. The trip was cancelled by the time they got to

Nashville, Tenn. for the terrible hurricane. Lavone and her


husband, Paul were able to visit Churchill Downs museum in Louisville and Andrew Jacksons home in Nashville. They also visited Mammoth Caves before heading back home.

Our April 2019 meeting was a program given by Lavone Anglen, Kansas Governor on her Dutch ancestor who has had

two books written about his adventure and discovery of the Mohawk and Oneida area in 1635 which eventually led to

the building of the Erie Canal and Manhattan becoming a large metropolis. Her ancestor was Harmen Meyndertsz van den Bogaert . The two books that were written were “The Island at the Center of the World” by Russell Shorto and “A

Journal into Mohawk and Oneida Country 1634-1635” by Charles T. Gehring and William A. Starna. This Dutch manu-

script was just recently transcribed around 2004 as a New Netherland project. The Journey led to cities like Chicago,

GreenBay, Toledo, Milwaukee, Detroit, Cleveland and Buffalo being on the Erie Canal.

Our chapter passed out our beautiful new yearbooks by Pat Carpenter at the April meeting and we are planning a July field trip to Leavenworth, Kansas.

KENTUCKY STATE SOCIETY Jessieanne H. Wells, Governor

The Kentucky Society, CSDIW met 22 May 2019 at Spindletop Hall, Lexington, KY. We voted to send a donation to

the Scholarship Fund and have a newly formed committee to research a worthy Native American concern to be the re-cipient of a project to offer support and assistance to a

Native American student or a residence program to benefit Native Americans. Our Society presents our CSDIW

wreath at other society markings to honor the Patriots and

make a presence for our Society so others know about our

Society. We currently have 39 members and are working with 9 prospective members. We meet jointly with Wilder-ness Road Company, Jamestowne Society and the

Kentucky Branch, Huguenot Society Founders of Manakin

MARYLAND STATE SOCIETY Margaret Stromberg, Governor

Maryland Society of CSDIW has had a productive year. We have 56 very enthusiastic members including two new

members. Our June meeting found us in Poolesville Maryland for elections and installation of our new slate of officers. In January we had our meeting in Alexandria, VA at Gatsby’s Tavern. The meeting started with a tour of the tavern and

an explanation about what services a tavern provided. We learned George Washington ate there, and Thomas Jefferson slept and danced there! We continue to support the library at Red Cloud School in SD with a donation of $200.00.

MICHIGAN STATE SOCIETY Helene Werner, Governor

It is with pleasure to represent the state of Michigan as their newest state Governor, being elected 8 November 2018

during our annual Heritage Days meeting. Honorary State Governor Moritz has completed scanning current available state society documents. The permanent retention documents have been placed in sheet protectors, now stored in note-

books. Michigan Society voted to make a one-time donation to the Elsie, MI Historical Society in the amount of $200

toward the building supplies for shelving to house our archives. The labor to build shelving will be donated. Thank you for the opportunity to serve.

MISSOURI STATE SOCIETY Leslie Vander Meulen Richards, Governor

The current officers of the Missouri Society were installed in August and the Society has met once since that time. In


February we met with another lineage society as usual. We alternate programs to be of interest to all, changing the focus each time to include colonial history and items of colonial era Indian matters. We alternate decorating for the meeting

and enjoy the items owned by some of our members used for the Indians-themed meetings.

We currently have 31 regular members and two life members, having lost a member earlier this year, for whom a memo-

rial service was conducted. We have three member applications in process. Our upcoming meeting will be in July. The State’s new directory/yearbook hopefully will be ready by then, updated

with all Continental Society officers and other pertinent information. Our members look forward to the upcoming Calu-

met to learn more about our Society.

The appreciation of the Missouri Daughters is extended to the current Continental officers for their diligence and speedy

work to be up to speed after the delay in taking office.

NEVADA STATE SOCIETY Rebecca Eisenman, Governor

The goals of this Society are well received by both the Native Americans living in Nevada and our members. Local

tribes are primarily the Shoshone and Paiute, many of whom live on the 28 Nevada official reservations recognized by

the US Government. Members of these tribes live in some of the most desolate parts of the state and live at a minimum subsistence level with few economic resources. Anything we can do to assist them is very welcome.

Currently Nevada has 38 members and 5 prospective members. Members are working with prospective members in the northern part of the state and we hope to charter a second chapter in Reno. This Officer continues to work with prospec-

tive members, holding weekly workshops to locate qualified ancestors. This Officer’s project is raising funds to purchase

school supplies to donate to a qualified Native American classroom.

At our Chartering Meeting in late April 2018, the featured speaker was a grandson of Chief Crazy Horse, Shoku Clown Horse. He delivered a “history lesson” on the Battle of the Little

Big Horn from the perspective of the Native Americans. Shoku is a medicine man and a sto-ryteller from a long line of such in his tribe.

Members participated in a Memorial Day service at the Grant Sawyer Government Building

and Statuary Gardens in Las Vegas. We posed with a statue of a Native American, symboliz-

ing America’s encounters and subsequent friendship with our neighbors. In July, The Society, in conjunction with the local Daughters of 1812 chapter, sponsored a

community program at the Historic Family Search Library on the River Raisin Battlefield. The First State Council meeting was held August 8, 2018, at the National Atomic Testing

Museum in Las Vegas. The site was chosen because the Nevada Test Site is situated on local

Paiute Nation lands. Guests received a guided tour of the museum by Director Michael Hall, which included the Paiute Indian exhibit. The featured speaker, Dr. Linda Miller, de-

livered a program on "Nevada Lands and Native Americans." She incorporated the Native American exhibit at the mu-seum in her talk as well as discussing the land that Helen Stewart deeded to the United States government in 1911, which

later became part of the Paiute reservation here. She brought out details in her book on "Early Las Vegas," which details more events about Helen Stewart and Native Americans. Bookmarks were created as mementos, with information on


Sarah Winnemucca, a famous Nevada Native American from the Paiute Nation. Dr. Miller spoke about how Sarah appealed to the federal government and was

donated to a needy, local Native American family. Many attended a The 20th

Annual Pahrump Inter-Tribal Social Powwow and donated time to the develop-ment of the programs. Presented were Traditional Native American Crafts, Mu-

sic, Food and Dancers.

The Second State Council meeting will be held August 10, 2019 at the Old

Mormon Fort in Las Vegas. The site was the former ranch of Mrs. Helen Stew-

art and was chosen because Mrs. Stewart donated some of her lands to the local Indians and established a school for their education.

Nevada Daughters are proud to claim membership in this Society that provides educational opportunities to our Native American neighbors. We look forward to a deeper exploration into and understanding of the culture of these indigenous

peoples.

OHIO STATE SOCIETY Betty “Betsie” Gricar Goad, Governor

Ohio Society held an Organizing meeting on Oct 7 with fifteen prospective members in attendance. Our carry-in made a great social time for our very productive meeting. After discussing officers, committees, bylaws, and standing rules, we

set a date of Dec 2 for our Chartering meeting.

Our chartering meeting was then held

in Blacklick, Ohio, and were honored to have twenty-six of our thirty-four chartering members attend. With

guests, there were 35 in attendance to

help celebrate our charter ceremony.

forever appreciated. The Ohio Society continues to grow with another new member and twelve prospective members. We will hold three

meetings a year in various locations around the state so that we may experience many of Ohio treasurers.


SOUTH CAROLINA STATE SOCIETY Mari R. Nooraai, Governor

The Continental Society Daughters of Indian Wars State of South Carolina (CSDIWSSC) had planned for an amazing

Annual Council in Greenville, South Carolina; however, the conference had to be cancelled due to Hurricane Florence.

Safety for all was of the utmost importance. This year marks the twentieth anniversary of the chartering of CSDIWSSC, and the plans for an anniversary celebration are underway with a special ceremony being planned for the 2019 Annual

Meeting in Charleston on Saturday, August 3, 2019 at Magnolias Restaurant.

This past fall CSDIWSSC welcomed four new members, and our Society continues to grow. CSDIWSSC is working on

a new yearbook so that all members will meeting dates and locations, State and National Bylaws, and other information

for each two-year term. This new yearbook format can be easily updated between administrations. During this admini-stration, CSDIWSSC will be focusing on raising funds for our National Society’s Scholarship fund and Indian Schools in

order to impact our country’s future by supporting education, helping our youth succeed in the classroom and beyond.

Continental Society Daughters of Indian Wars of South Carolina held its Spring Field Trip in Pickens, South Carolina

for a delightful luncheon meeting at the GateHouse Restaurant and special trip to the Hagood Creek Petroglyph Site. Local naturalist Dennis Chastain was the most engaging speaker. Recently, Chastain was awarded the prestigious Ex-traordinary Achievement Award from Upstate Forever because of his more than forty years of work in conservation, spe-

cializing in Native American history.

Members learned about this prehistoric history in South Carolina’s upcountry, and they were able to visit the petro-

glyphs, bringing history to life. It is a privilege to serve as State Governor during your administration.

TEXAS STATE SOCIETY Lisa Kight Alcala'

The Texas Society of the Continental Society of Indian Wars met on Thursday, February 14, 2019 at the Hilton Garden

Inn at Temple, Texas. The meeting was called to order by the Texas Society Governor, Lisa Kight Alcala’ at 1:30 p.m.

The ritual and pledges were conducted by Mrs. Alcala’ and the membership. Mrs. Alcala’ introduced guests and hon-ored members – Mrs. Helene Werner, Historian General CSDIW, Mrs. Karen Hall, Honorary Past Continental Society

and Honorary Past Texas Society Governor, Mrs. Mary Glenn, current Registrar General of CSDIW, past honorary Texas Society Governor and current Texas Society Registrar, Mrs. Carol Steakley, Honorary Texas Society Governor,

and Mrs. Janisue Rigel, Immediate Past Texas Society Governor (present by phone).

Governor Mrs. Alcala’ announced that the Texas Society yearbook has been distributed to all members with email and requested any changes in name, address, phone or email be sent to State 2nd Deputy Governor, Mrs. Tammy Mouliere.

Mrs. Alcala’ advised members that our Continental Society National officers had not changed due to the fact that the annual Continental Society Fall meeting had to be cancelled due to the hurricane and that those officers will instead be

elected and installed in the spring at the meeting in Washington, DC.


Governor Mrs. Alcala’ also announced to the membership a change in meeting dates for the Texas Society Annual Meet-ing beginning in 2020. Instead of meeting the 1st week in September as in the past, in coordination with the other line-

age groups meeting during that week, Texas Society Annual Meetings will now

be held the 3rd or 4th week in August. This is to allow as many members as

possible who may be members of DAR as well, to attend these other lineage society meetings. This decision was made due to DAR adding additional meet-

ings to their Fall Forum schedule which encroached on the meeting times and

attendance of the other groups’ meeting in the week leading up to DAR Fall

Forum.

Additionally, as a result of this change, the Texas Society will need to amend their state bylaws to come into compliance with our new practice. A few other

state bylaws also need amending so the Texas Society will be up to date with current practices of the society.

A special ceremony was held for Mrs. Helene Werner naming her as an honor-

ary member of the Texas Society. Ora Jane Johnson, Tejas Chapter Governor

and Mrs. Alcala presented Mrs. Werner with a book and a certificate. Other business – a motion was made and adopted to pay the fee due for the

rental of the meeting room at the hotel. Mrs. Karen Hall and Mrs. Mary Glenn introduced for discussion the idea of reverting to just a Texas Society instead of

having chapters in addition to the Texas Society. A motion was made for repre-

sentatives to discuss this with the Continental Society Governor General at the

Spring Meeting. State Registrar, Mrs. Glen, reported on deaths of two members – Mrs. Nedaye Potts and Mrs. Mary Bishop. Other reports were filed. The meeting was adjourned at 2:30 p.m.

VIRGINIA STATE SOCIETY Lila Housden, Governor

The Continental Society Daughters of Indian Wars in the State of Virginia held our final meeting of 2018 on September

9, 2018 at Hanover Tavern, VA with Governor Suzanna Townsend presiding. The 2018 – 2020 administration was

ous donation in support of the new Native American Veterans Memorial being built in Washington, DC. At this meet-ing all of the past Governors of the Society were in attendance including the Founding Governor, Sharon Stine.

To encourage membership and knowledge of the VA Society, we have created a member only Facebook page which is

very popular. We have also begun to collect books on Native American Hisotry and Interests to distribute to area

schools. We hope you will plan to attend the dedication of the Native American Veterans Memorial on Veterans Day, November

2020 in Washington, DC.

We will be boarding the O.C. Cruiser for a ride to the Mission San Juan Capistrano for a docent tour. This will be

followed by lunch at the El Adobe de Capistrano restaurant for authentic Mexican cuisine (http://

eladobedecapistrano.com/). We will then board the O.C. Cruiser for a ride back to the hotel.

Welcome Dinner - Rossa’s Cucina (Italian cuisine) 425 N. Vineyard Avenue, Ontario, CA.

There will be numerous raffle items. Winner need not be present to win. The dream catcher and wall hanging will

benefit the State Governor’s Project. The Indian doll will benefit the National Governor General’s Project. Silent Auction items will be available to benefit the State Governor’s Project. Drawing will be held at the National Council

Dinner Banquet on September 21st. Tickets will be sold 1 for $5, 3 for $10, and 8 for $20.

STANDING RULES PROPOSED CHANGES

1. Standing Rule #5

Life memberships for members under age 60, a one-time fee of $250.00 will be accessed; all other ages

will pay $200.00.

The suggested changes will correct the word usage (access/assess), and more clearly defines age limits.

Suggested changes to read:

Life memberships shall be in two categories. The one time fee of $250 will be assessed for those under the

age of 60. The one time fee of $200 will be assessed for those aged 60 and older.

2. Standing Rule #8

The Spring Board of Management will be held in Washington D.C. in April at the beginning or end of the

other organizations meetings. The time to be determined by the current Governor General.

The suggested changes are for clarification and better sentence structure.

Suggested changes to read:

The Spring Board of Management will be held in Washington D.C. in April, prior to, or following, the

other heritage society meetings. The Spring Board of Management dates will be determined by the current

Governor General.

3. Standing Rules numbers 9-13 belong in the Handbook, not in the Standing Rules. Removing them to the

proper location gives the Society 8 Standing Rules.
