Contextualization• Review: What is it?
• Understanding how the context surrounding an event might influence it•Would the outcome have been different under different
circumstances? Would it even have happened?
Types of Context• 3 types of context:• Broad Context- The “Big Picture.” What is going on during this time
period that is influencing your event? Ex. Tensions between colonists and England leading to Lexington and Concord
• Local Context- The “Little Picture.” What immediate circumstances are affecting your event? Ex. British troops wading through a river
•Master Context- How does this event interact with the rest of history? How is it similar to other things that happened; how is it different?
Pulling Context: PracticeAs we watch the 4 presidential advertisements, take notes on what issues might have been important to the people at the time.

Continuity and Change Over Time
The Pledge of Allegiance• As a class, I think we need to work on our patriotism, so we’re going to practice the Pledge of Allegiance until we get it perfect.
• Stand up, and when I say go, recite the pledge
• I’ll stop you if I don’t think you’re doing it quite right
Why did it change?
Continuity and Change Over Time• What has changed within a specific time period?
• What has remained the same within a specific time period?
• What can explain why some things have changed and others have not?
