HOW TO SURVIVE CULTURE SHOCK

Vietnam is a multi-nationality country with rich and inherent culture of 54 ethnic groups. Cutural shock caused by moving from a familiar culture and lifestyle to one which is completely different is unadvoidable. Here are just some highlights we would like to share with you in order to reduce the impact of culture shock and find out the best way to deal with issues. The most important thing is to be patient, optimistic, and open-minded to explore the country!

Vietnamese life revolves around the family

The most common utensils are chopsticks and a flat spoon. When finished, lay chopsticks on top of your bowl. Do not stand up chopsticks in the food.

One of the most dimensions of politeness if for the young to show respect to the elders. Younger people should be the fist to issue the common salutation “xin chao” when meeting someone older.

Vietnamese people are very friendly and they appreaciate when expats make an effort to speak to them in their own language.

Accept the differences

Make friends with the locals

Take off your shoes when you enter temples and someone’s house

Use both hands when passing anything

Be careful of your belongings and valuables

Keep your passport and valuables at home. A photocopy will suffice

Do not worry about the misunderstandings or the funny mistakes that might cause uncomfortable situations

Never sleep or sit with the soles of your feet poiting towards the atar

Never lose your temper

Do not commit public displays of affection

Do not take photographs of military installations

Do not carry more money than you need when walking around the streets

Do not be paranoid about your security, just be aware of the surroundings
