Nature Reader Book K I Is for Iguana

I Is for

Iguana

Here comes a member of the lizard family. There are many kinds of

iguanas. Some are even kept as pets. Be sure to first ask your parents before you bring one of them home with you.

The giant green iguanas of Central and South America can easily grow to six feet long. When they are treated nicely, they can be quiet, loving, and taught to walk with a leash.

Tame and wild iguanas like to eat fruits and the leaves of plants. The wild ones live in rain forests and on some

islands, but they can also be found along the gulf coast of Florida. They sometimes hide in attics of houses and on beaches, and often destroy gardens. If they are not bothered, they usually will not hurt a person. They just may scare you.

A Beaver and a Squirrel“Good morning, little squirrel; may I ask what you are doing?” said a beaver.

“Yes,” said the squirrel. “I am working very hard to lay up my winter store of nuts.”

“How do you get those nuts cracked?” asked the beaver. “You are so little; I can’t believe you can do it!”

“Yes, I can,” said the squirrel. “I do it with my sharp teeth. Watch me as I turn a nut over in my sharp claws and gnaw on it. My teeth wear away as I use them. That keeps them sharp. They keep growing all the time, so that they do not wear out.”

“My teeth are like that, too!” said the beaver. “But I can gnaw much bigger things than nuts with my teeth. I can

gnaw down a tree.”

“Really?” said the squirrel. “But why would you

want to do that?”

tide will shut it in. Mr. Crab watches the waves come near. At the last wave, he runs into his house because he knows the next wave will close the opening. Mr. Crab never stays up one wave too long. He gets in his house just in time.

Review

1. When Mr. Crab sees some other crab near his house, what does he do?

2. If Mr. Crab’s claw, eye, or back is hurt in a fight, where does he go?

3. Why does Mr. Crab fear birds most?

4. When the tide comes in, what does Mr. Crab do?

Food for Mr. CrabThe crab that has one large claw has many names. Some call it the “fighting crab” because it is angry so much of the time. Others name it the “calling crab” because, when it runs, it holds its big claw high as if it is calling, “Come! Come!” Most people call it the “fiddler crab” and say that its big claw is its fiddle. I think f idd le r crab is the best name for it

because it can,

Nature Reader Book 3 The Dragonfly, Damselfly, and Lacewing

There are several kinds of dragonf lies. These are different in color and size, and in the shapes of their bodies. One, with a very long, thin, dark body, is called the “darning needle.” One, with a thicker body, is called the “golden-ringed.” Its body is largest at the tail end. This one is dressed in alternating stripes of black and yellow, or “gold”; and it is large and strong.

A smaller insect similar to the dragonf ly, which has no spots on the wings, is called the damself ly. This kind is among the prettiest of all. Some of

them are bright red, and others are a clear, light blue. They look more

like creatures in some fairy tale than like real live insects because they f lit here and there like streaks of bright-colored light. You can hardly see the wings on which they f ly.

There is an even smaller insect similar to the dragonf ly called the lacewing. The head and body of the lacewing are bright green; its wings are like

white gauze ; but its main beauty is in its eyes. Some call it “golden eyes” because its eyes are like a drop of amber, or melted gold. The veins in the wings of the lacewing are very fine. As the light falls on the wings, they change in color and look like pink, red, blue, green, or gold threads.

This lovely lacewing does not like the bright light of the midday sun, as the dragonf ly

does. It prefers to come out in the moonlight, or when the sun is setting. Moreover, the lacewing is

not a water lover, as the dragonf ly is. It

lays its eggs on leaves, and

every egg is held upon a little, silken stem. The stem is much like the silk that the spider spins. These eggs are laid in groups.

When the young larvae come out of their eggs, they feed on the little aphids. Do you remember that the aphids make the honeydew that honey ants like so much? In two weeks, these lacewing larvae change to pupae. To do this, the lacewing

each kind of bird has its own particular

way of f lying and looks different from any other bird. Even if the day is

cloudy and you cannot see the colors of birds, you can identify them by their f light through

the air or their actions on the ground.

Review

1. The various types of beaks are good for what?

2. Describe the wings of various birds.

3. How do various birds hold their tails when they f ly?

If you see a bird f ly, notice its wings. Some birds, such as swallows and swifts, have very long, narrow, strong wings, for they feed “on the wing,” capturing many insects. Birds with short, round wings, such as the quail, can make a quick f light from an enemy but do not f ly a long distance. Birds with large wings, such as hawks and eagles, usually soar or f loat in the air while scanning, or carefully examining, the ground for food.

Also notice how a bird holds its tail when it f lies. When a blackbird f lies, its tail looks like the keel of a boat; the mourning dove’s tail is very pointed; and the barn swallow’s tail is forked. Watch the bird as it f lies, for some birds f ly in a wavelike line, others f ly in a jerky manner, and some others f ly in a straight line. Some f lap their wings constantly, others f lap them and then close them and dip, some f lap their wings and then sail, and others f ly as though it were hard work for them. Observe also the general shape of the bird as it f lies, for

Review 1. What covers the bodies of most crabs?

2. How many pairs of legs do most crabs have?

Soft-Shell CrabsHave you ever heard of a soft-shell crab? Soft-shell crabs are not a species of crab. The name refers to a stage of a crab’s development. Crab mothers lay eggs. When these eggs hatch, the baby crabs, or zoeae (zö•ë •́∂), are very small. As the crab grows, its hard shell does not grow with it like your bones do. Instead, the crab’s shell comes off, and it grows a new one. This is called molting.

When the crab has lost its shell, it is “soft” until its new shell hardens. Crabs must be especially careful when they are not protected by a hard shell. There are many animals in the ocean, and many birds flying above or wading nearby, that would love to eat them. Soft-shell crabs are even on

the menu at restaurants. Like many other crea-tures, crabs spend their time finding food to

eat and trying to avoid being eaten!

Review 1. What is a soft-shell crab?

2. Why is this a dangerous time for a crab?

toy poodle are both dogs, but they do not seem much alike in many ways. The same is true of these many shellfish.

Review 1. What is an exoskeleton?

2. What are the sections of a crustacean’s body called?

Crabs The crab is a type of crustacean. There are thousands of species (kinds) of crabs, and there are differences between them. Some characteristics—that is, features or qualities that belong to these creatures that serve to identify them—are similar. For example, most crabs have a body covered with a hard shell. They also have five pairs of legs. The first pair of legs has pincers or claws, which are used to get food. Sometimes they use them to fight with other crabs or fish. If a crab loses a claw, it can grow back!

Some crabs move sideways, crawling along the bot-tom of the ocean. Some crabs dig down, or bur-row, in the soft sand. Some crabs live part or all of their lives out of the water. Some crabs live in the deepest part of the ocean in complete darkness. Some crabs are small and crawl inside shells that they find, as a place to hide. Some crabs have legs that are longer than a tall person. No matter what part of cre-ation you begin to study, you will find out that God has given us an amazing world to learn about and to use.
