Dean’s Message
The past year was a significant year for the Faculty. We celebrated our 80th anniversary in November 2009 and moved to a new building on 29 December 2009.
In the 80 years of its existence, the Faculty of Dentistry has produced generations of dental professionals who have contributed to raising the quality of oral healthcare for Singaporeans. Many of our nearly 1,700 graduates and faculty staff have gone on to distinguish themselves professionally both locally and overseas. The dedicated efforts and enterprising spirit of faculty, researchers and students – past and present – in striving for excellence, their commitment and immense contributions have helped shape the Faculty and established it as an academic institution of international standing. Our new 4-storey building, with a floor area of more than 6,000 m2,
provides additional space for the Faculty to increase its student intake from the current 230 undergraduate and postgraduate students to about 260 by 2012. In March 2010, collaborating with Jurong General Hospital, we expanded our clinical services to Alexandra Hospital. This is a 6-chair dental clinic, providing the full range of clinical dentistry. January 2010 also saw a change of administration, with a new Deanery team at the helm. I would like put on record the Faculty’s appreciation to my predecessor, Associate Professor Keson Tan, for his faithful leadership of the Faculty these past nine years. The new team will continue to build on the foundation laid down and continue to innovate in teaching, consolidate and build the Faculty’s research and expand NUHS clinical services.
“The dedicated efforts and enterprising spirit of faculty, researchers and students – past and present – in striving for excellence, their commitment and immense contributions have helped shape the Faculty and established it as an academic institution of international standing.”

Faculty of Dentistry
annual report 09/10 09
Directions and strategiesEducation:Whilst education remains one of its core strengths, the Faculty will continue to innovate and leverage on technology to develop new pedagogies, to ensure that NUS dentistry graduates will have the skills required to work in a globally competitive and rapidly advancing technological world. Review of the curriculum started in May 2010 and changes are expected to be implemented by AY 2012.
The Faculty hopes to enhance graduate education by increasing the number and diversity of graduate students in the Masters of Dental Surgery (MDS) residency and research programmes. In the long term, the Faculty plans to strengthen its partnership with overseas universities and introduce new MDS by coursework programmes in areas such as Paediatric Dentistry and Dental Public Health.
Research:The Faculty aims to strengthen its research reputation and develop peaks of excellence in research. Strategies to achieve this include the following:
1. Deepen research capabilities in current strengths, namely regenerative biology & tissue engineering, translational research and develop public health research.
2. Recruit senior scientists and clinician scientists.
3. Increase collaboration between scientists and clinicians in the Faculty, within NUS, as well as with research centres, industry and institutions overseas.
Clinical services:In line with the tripartite mission of NUHS, the Faculty will develop clinical services and synergise patient care with teaching and translational research.
The Faculty intends to grow clinical services in NUHS to provide oral health care for Singaporeans. The Faculty plans to expand its services at two locations. The existing clinical facilities will be consolidated, remodelled and revamped to support expansion in services. In collaboration with Jurong General Hospital, we have started dental services at Alexandra Hospital.

Highlights of the Year
In November 2009, the Faculty of Dentistry celebrated its 80 years of tertiary education, clinical service and research to Singapore with the theme, “Empowering the Future of Dentistry”, which comprised a slate of activities and events that involved its alumni, staff, students and friends.
Among the activities organised in celebration of the 80th anniversary, was the Oral Health Symposium and Dental Screening. Aimed at the public, the Symposium provided talks related to cleft lip and palate conditions in children, the clinical implications
of common medical conditions like diabetes and genetic conditions to oral health and the treatment strategies available, as well as ways of identifying early signs of mouth (oral) cancer. More than 70 people attended the Symposium and free dental screening.
The 80th Anniversary was indeed extraordinary for the Faculty of Dentistry. The Faculty experienced the heartwarming generosity of many donors associated in one way or another with the dental fraternity. Donations from alumni, dental practices, dental organizations and a foundation (see story on Lee Foundation Bursary), amounted to $285,000.

The Gala Dinner was the grand finale of all the 80th Anniversary celebratory events, and it was graced by Dr Ng Eng Hen, Minister for Education and Second Minister for Defence, as the Guest-of-Honour.
The night’s programme consisted of various performances by faculty staff and students, which included A/P Keson Tan, then Dean of Faculty, as the guest drummer for one of the music bands. The event continued well into the night as many of the guests, which included old friends, alumni and new acquaintances, stayed behind to reminisce on old and great times.

The Faculty began its big move into the new building on 29 December 2009. On 6 January 2010, the new student clinics on level 2 were opened for patient visits. Designed with an open concept and interlinking brides between its two wings, the building houses modern facilities and provides new vistas for the training of dental students.

Undergraduate Student Exchange
In September 2009, 19 of our Second, Third and Fourth Year students embarked on a two-week attachment to the following overseas dental institutions:
third year dental students at peking University
third year dental students at the University of North Carolina
Of the 19 students, 10 students were sponsored by dental companies (KaVo Dental, Shofu Inc, GC Asia, WDES) as well as the NUS Office of Alumni Relations.
The faculty also hosted 29 international dental students who visited our dental school within the Academic Year 2009/2010. They hail from USA, Scotland, UK, India, Pakistan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Australia. These exchanges provided wonderful opportunities for cross-cultural experiences and the forging of friendships between the overseas and the NUS students.

over 370 local and overseas dentists, dental students and dental auxiliaries. The Symposium featured three expert speakers: Dr Terry Donovan (USA), Dr David Manton (Australia) and our very
own Dr Marlene Teo, who each shared their knowledge and experience on the emergent repertoire of innovative materials being introduced to the dental profession.
Chonnam University, Korea, on 3 July 2009On 3 July 2009, the Faculty played host to five undergraduate dental students from Chonnam University. They were accompanied by faculty staff Dr Min-Suk Kook from the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.
