WHAT IS KASUKU?

Kasuku is the Swahili word for parrot.

1: A tropical bird that is often crested and brightly

coloured, with a distinctive stout hooked bill.

2: A person who sedulously echoes another’s words

Two interesting descriptions. And that is exactly what

Kasuku Kikoys are all about. The parrot known for

its fl amboyant colours is effectively expressed in our

collection of distinguished and equally vibrant colours.

Going with the second description, our kikoys echo our mission

and vision. Our mission is simply to constantly and diligently

persevere and innovate in order to give our customers not only

what they desire, but also a diverse collection of items that

refl ect the trends of a modern world.

WHO IS KASUKU?

We are trendsetters.

Kasuku, established in 1994, has mastered the art of mak-

ing adorable yet relaxing kikoys for all and every occasion.

Our workshop is in Kenya and we have been manufacturing

kikoys since 1998. We are utilising the best local talent

and our culture-rich sources to give you the best. Our team

of creative designers have blended the traditional kikoy

designs with modern fashions to create a collection

of enchantingly seductive, refreshingly relaxing and

comfortably trendy kikoys and garments.

Several accessories are handcrafted and the work is

outsourced to ‘collectives’ of Masaai and Mkamba women

and other groups who benefi t from the extra income.

Kasuku is a family-run business and we pride ourselves

in offering friendly service and personal attention.

trends and regularly innovating not only to keep with the

trend but also to be always a step ahead.

THE KASUKU COLLECTIONS

In this catalogue, Kasuku has put together three main

collections based on the type of fabric and colours.

The Kikoy Collection

The traditional kikoy is used for wraps, clothing, accessories

and furnishings. An unrivalled number of colours and

products in kikoy make this collection varied and suitable

for all tastes. Made from 100% mercerised cotton, items

in this category are comfortable and durable.

The Marini Collection

Marini in Swahili means attractive, elegant, fashionable

and fresh.

Wraps and select clothing are made from the revolutionary

new material we call the ‘Marini’. It’s lighter and more

versatile than the classic kikoy. The Marini collection

also made from 100% cotton, offers you a vast choice

in colours.

The Safari Collection

“safari n an overland expedition, esp. in East Africa to observe game

and wild animals in their natural habitat.”

This collection reflects the true colours of a Kenyan

Safari. We can rightly boast that the Safari Collection is

exclusively Kasuku.

MARK OF QUALITY

Mercerised cotton gives our kikoys a superior and unique

quality. In addition, our own workshops with a quality con-

trol section ensure that we provide you with consistent

good quality products.

DESIGNS OF DISTINCTION

The kikoy is a work of art and most traditional kikoys

were woven in two distinct designs that we call Kongoni

and Kifaru. To provide for different tastes and changing

fashions, Kasuku have developed two new patterns - Swara

and Punda Milia. Put together, these four striking designs

are able to meet the clothing needs of today; comfort,

style and innovation.

Kongoni (Hartebeest)

This is the traditional kikoy that is plain in the middle and has a distinctive border. Kasuku’s radiant and vivid yarn colours are

combined together to give you an amazing assortment of this time-honoured design.

Call it a Kasuku Kikoy, sarong, a pareo, lava lava or a lungi. Rectangular in shape, kikoys make ideal beach cover-ups. Worn as

a skirt, the ends of the kikoy are normally simply tucked in at the waist, no buttons, pins or hooks. They can be worn by guys

and girls and anyhow. It’s all up to how creative you can be. There are many other uses of the kikoy wrap...from sarong to scarf,

tablecloth to throws, beach-blanket to sun shields. An African version of a ‘pashmina’, Kasuku Kikoys are available in a wide

array of colours and a choice of plain or striped patterns.

Kasuku Wraps are also available in the sensual Marini fabric for that even cooler and more

relaxed feeling. The beauty of the Marini wraps is that they are made from ultra-light, sheer

seductive cotton. You can craft them into any outfi t you want, from a sexy bikini to a cool skirt.

Kasuku Marinis come in plain colours and in two-tone (woven with two colours of yarn). Also in

this range, unique to Kasuku, is the MARIKOY (a perfect blend of Marini & kikoy) in the Kongoni,

The great East African Sarong

Kangas were traditionally made for women

to wear but have long been unisex and multi-

functional. The soft, improved, higher quality

cotton from which Kasuku Kangas are

made makes an ideal fabric for wraps,

floaty skirts, trousers and shirts, sun and

wind- shields, shawls and curtains.

Unlike Kikoys, their designs are printed

instead of woven. There are many estab-

lished designs and more being invented

every day. The distinct feature of each

kanga isn’t only the design, but the Swahili

proverb printed on it.

Kangas make great gifts, especially as

souvenirs of great events, and also make

interesting collectibles. Kasuku Kangas are

fringed at the two ends making them more

fascinating.

This is an evolution of the Shuka. It’s thicker and heavier and is perfect as a TV blanket or rug. It is made

from acrylic and brushed to give it that soft feel. Like the Maasai Shuka, though the designs vary, these are

available in predominantly red colour.

Dress like the world-famous Maasai in their traditional attire. Heavier

than both kangas and kikoys; they are the traditional outfi t of the

Maasai. Shukas usually come in red - the favourite colour of the

Maasai, to match their red ochre decorated bodies.

Made predominantly in a checked design, the colours and sizes of

stripes vary.

Thrown over the shoulder or tied round the waist by a sword belt,

they are multi-functional, from wrap to scarf, rug to blanket. Shukas

are often used in Africa as tablecloths; dog blankets and are ideal

for picnics. We provide you with a choice between the lighter 100%

Cotton Shuka and the original heavier acrylic Maasai Shuka.

Our manufacturing plant is based in Ruiru, which is about

25 kms from Nairobi, Kenya. We offer steady jobs to

hundreds of men and women in that area. We are totally

compliant with the labour laws and support the community

at large.

We also outsource some of our work to local community

women’s groups, which benefi t from the extra income to

support their families.

KASUKU SUPPORTS A CHILDREN’S CENTRE:

Since 2006, Kasuku has been supporting the Ruiru

Rehabilitation Centre.

The Ruiru Rehabilitation Centre evolved from a local

response to the increasing number of street children within

and around Ruiru Town. It began as a feeding programme

in 1997.

Local well-wishers gave the street children food once a week.

In 1998, a temporary shelter made it possible for the children

to have a roof over their heads and a stable environment.

It started with only 30 boys but now accommodates 50

boys and gir ls who are provided with food, shelter,

clothing and medical care in a clean and healthy environment.

All school-aged children are in school and the smaller

children are being educated at the Centre.

In 2006, the Centre with assistance from Kasuku and

others acquired four acres of land to build a more permanent

structure with dormitories, a community hall, kitchen, toilets

and bathrooms. In the long run, the plan involves building a

school on the same piece of land.

Besides contributing money for the land, Kasuku also

donates fi nancially towards the day-to-day running of the

Centre. Monthly, a percentage of the Kasuku retail sales

is given to the Centre with a fi xed minimum amount.

CUSTOMISED ORDERS

Whilst Kasuku has its own line of clothing and accesso-

ries, our large Kenyan workshop can undertake customised

orders for certain quantities. Since we weave our own fab-

ric, we can make kikoys in corporate colours pr colours to

match the theme of hotel rooms. Call us or email to check

on the various possibilities.

WASHING INSTRUCTIONS

Kasuku Kikoys get better and better with washing

and wearing.

Though mercerised cotton kikoys are strong and colour

fast, it is recommended to wash at 40˚C and DO NOT

tumble dry or bleach. Like all cottons, it is advisable to wash

separately the fi rst time. Set iron on cotton and use steam.

Kasuku Marinis are also made from 100% cotton and the

same washing instructions apply as for kikoys. Since the

fabric is very fi ne, it is advisable to handle them with a little

extra care.

Every reasonable care has been taken to ensure that

the descriptions and colours are accurate. However

certain colours due to the two-tone effect may have a

slight variance.

Hand-dyed products and certain beads could have a slight

colour difference due to the purely manual process.
