GLOSSARY OF TERMSTo better understand the information presented in this section you should better familiarize yourself with these terms.

Display Controller - A device used to provide HD scorer video and control for the overhead monitors on a lane pair.

Splitter - A device used to split a TV or cable signal into multiple signals of equal strength.

Tap - A device, similar to a switch, used to split a TV or cable signal into multiple signals. A tap differs from a splitter in that a tap splits the signal, but not evenly. This allows a specific amount of the signal to be directed to one monitor while the majority of the signal can continue to additional monitors.

Head Unit - See TV distribution center.

Modulator - Device(s) in the TV Distribution Center that assign a TV channel to the signal received from an A/V source such as a DVD player, cable box, or satellite receiver. The signal can then be viewed on the overhead monitors by tuning the monitor to the assigned channel.

TV-Only Monitor - A monitor that is used to display only the video sent from the TV Distribution Center. This monitor cannot display bowler’s scoresheet.

TV Distribution Center - A audio/ video component usually located at the desk that accepts A/V signals from various sources such as DVD players, cable boxes, or satellite receivers and assigns a unique “TV channel” to each of them. The sources can then be viewed at the overhead monitors by tuning the monitor to the desired channel.

OVERVIEW The Brunswick Sync scoring system is capable of providing both high definition scorer and TV video to the LED overhead monitors. The system also provides the ability to turn the overhead monitors on/off and switch the monitors between the scoresheet and TV video through either the control desk or by using the remote control that comes with the monitors.

An interface box called a Display Controller receives scoring information through an Ethernet network connection and provides the high definition scorer video and monitor control signals for the monitor. Optional high definition TV video is provided to the overhead screens through coaxial cables originated at the TV distribution center (Head Unit). Refer to figures titled Sync System Video and Sync System - Overhead Monitor Control.

DISPLAY CONTROLLER

ConnectionsThe Display Controller receives scoring information from the Distribution Interface through a network connection. Using this information it provides the high definition scorer video to the monitors for a lane pair using HDMI cables. It also provides on/off and video source control for the monitors through a serial port (Com1). Refer to the figure titled Display Controller.

Display Controller The function of the connections on the Display Controller are:

(1) Overhead Control - (Com 1) RS232 serial port that provides On/Off and video input control for the overheads.

(2) Scorer Video - (HDMI 1 / HDMI 2) HD Output connection to the LCD monitor for the scorer

video. HDMI 1 - left (odd) lane video, HDMI 2 is right (even) lane video. (3) Network - (LAN) Connection for the ethernet network. The Display Controller communicates

with the other devices in the system through this connection. (4) Network 2 (Not Used) - Disabled network port. Do NOT USE.

(5) Power In - (DC In 12v) Input for power coming from the power supply unit located behind the left lane overhead monitor.

(6) Status LEDs - (HDD/SYS) The HDD LED flashes to indicate when the hard drive inside the Display Controller is being accessed. The system LED lights when the Display Controller is “ON”.

7) Power Switch - This switch turns the Display Controller On/Off.

Display Controller Configuration SettingsSettings and assignments for the Display Controller can be found in the Sync office program under the Lanes tab, Display Controller selection and under the Administrator tab, System Control selection. These setting located under the Lane tab are configured at installation and typically do not need to be altered when replacing the Display Controller. They are provided here as reference only. The Display Controller settings located under the Administrator / System Control are also configured at installation but should be verified whenever the Display Controller is replaced. Refer to figures titled Lane Tab - Display Controller Setup 1, Lane Tab - Display Controller Setup 2, Lane Tab - Display Controller Properties, Administrator Tab - System Control and System Control - Display Controller Setup.

the system.

(2) Lane Assignment - Drop down boxes used to assign lane numbers to the Display Controller. Set the Lane Assignment as follows:

Left Lane - The left lane number of the lane pair on which the Display Controller is

installed. Right Lane - The right lane number of the lane pair on which the Display Controller is

installed.

(3) Monitor - From the drop down boxes, select the model of the monitors used on the left and right lane of the lane pair. This selection determines the “remote control” codes used to control the monitor.

(4) Port- From the drop down boxes, select the comport the Display Controller uses to control the monitors. The setting for both the left and right lane should be set to the same comport number since both lanes are controlled through a common connection. In most centers these will be set as follows:

Left Lane - Com1 Right Lane - Com1 Center TVs - Com1

ECO SettingsThe ECO Sensor function automatically adjusts the backlight in the overhead to compensate for changes in the ambient light levels near the monitor. Because lighting level is not consistent throughout a bowling center, this automatic adjustment can cause some monitors to appear brighter when compared to other monitors.

The Energy Saving function automatically adjusts the backlight based on the image being displayed on the screen. Because the images change throughout the day, this can cause issues when comparing screen brightness.

To ensure a uniformed brightness level for all monitors, the ECO Sensor and Energy Saving functions should be disabled.

IMPORTANT!: Any time the monitor is reset to factory defaults, the ECO Sensor and Energy Saving functions are ENABLED.

Use the Samsung remote control as described below to disable these functions:

NOTE: The following screens are for reference only. Actual screens may be different based on the Samsung model installed in the center.

1. Press the MENU button on the remote control. “Picture” will be selected by default.

2. Use the DOWN ARROW button to navigate to “System”, then press ENTER.

MAINTENANCE OF OVERHEAD MONITORSAlthough the monitors require very little maintenance, it is suggested that you follow the screen manufacturer’s recommendations to keep them running at optimum performance. As each manufacturer has their own maintenance requirements, it is impossible to give specific recommendations for monitors supplied by a bowling center. Always check with the manufacturer of your monitor before using any cleaning solution or glass cleaner.

In general, it is important to make sure that any vent holes are clear of obstructions and the monitors are adjusted and cleaned for optimum readability.

General CleaningExercise care when cleaning as the panel and exterior of advanced LCDs are easily scratched.Take the following steps when cleaning.

1. Turn the monitor power off. 2. Disconnect the power cord from the product. Hold the power cable by the plug and do not touch

the cable with wet hands. Otherwise, an electric shock may result. 3. Wipe the product with a clean, soft and dry cloth. Do not use detergents that contain alcohol, solvent or surface-active agents. Do not spray water or detergent directly on the product. 4. Wet a soft and dry cloth in water and wring thoroughly to clean the exterior of the product. 5. Connect the power cord to the monitor when cleaning is finished. 6. Power on the monitor..

Vent HolesKeep the vent holes on the back of the screen clean of dirt and dust. It is recommended to wipe holes with a soft cloth a minimum of once per year. If using the internal cooling fan continuously, it’s recommended to wipe vent holes a minimum of once a month.

AdjustmentsAdjust the monitor’s brightness, contrast and sharpness controls to enhance readability. Refer to the monitor vendor manual for specific adjustment procedures.
