His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada once saw a group of children fighting with stray dogs over scraps of food. Moved by this incident he was determined that ‘No child within a radius of ten miles from our centre should go hungry.’ This direction to his followers inspired the birth of The Akshaya Patra Foundation. It is also the driving force behind all the milestones The Foundation has achieved so far.

How It Started

2 How it Started

The year 2015 has been a promising year for Akshaya Patra with some major achievements, developments and philanthropic collaborations coming our way. We are now 16 years old and we have already touched 1.5 million beneficiaries across 10 states in India.

Akshaya Patra would not have been able to add these feathers to its cap without the persistent and unwavering support of our generous donors, supporters, corporate partners and well-wishers from all walks of life. I would particularly like to thank the Government of India for extending its seamless support to Akshaya Patra for over a decade now. Without the cumulative effort and participation of the entire Akshaya Patra fraternity and our supporters we would not have been able to take great strides in our service to the society.

The past few months have been quite eventful here, at Akshaya Patra. As a part of our development agenda, we have recently expanded our centralised kitchen at Hyderabad. Our kitchens at Surat and Ahmedabad have got ISO certification. We have adopted a first of its kind Biogas unit at our Ballari kitchen. We have also been featured on CNN International in a special telecast for their “On the Road” series.

Akshaya Patra has also had the good fortune to host quite a few dignitaries in the past months. It was indeed a pinnacle moment when our Honourable Minister of Home Affairs, Sri Rajnath Singh, visited our Lucknow kitchen to mark the kitchen’s one year of successful operations.

As a validation of our hard work, Akshaya Patra has been recognised across several platforms in India and overseas. Recently, we were bestowed with the 14th Mother Teresa Award’ in the Best NGO category for our contribution towards feeding children in India. Another notable mention is the ‘ABP News Positive Award’ 2015 that recognised Akshaya Patra for being an emblem of positive change in society.

Amazon, the E-commerce giant came to our support for the ‘Nourish India, Dal by Dal’ campaign where they helped raise funds for The Foundation.

All of these developments & recognitions are echoes of the commitment that we hold towards our children, who have every right to education and a happy childhood. We are optimistic that with the steadfast support of the Government and our well-wishers, we will soon eliminate classroom hunger and give our children a promising future.

ISKCON Bangalore, the prestigious Padma Shri. The award has been conferred in recognition of the distinguished service rendered by Akshaya Patra for the children of India.

Thanking the Government for this recognition, Madhu Pandit Dasa said “I dedicate this award to Srila Prabhupada, a true visionary who wanted to see a hunger free world. This award will give immense encouragement to the Akshaya Patra team to reach greater heights in its service. Srila Prabhupada, the founder of ISKCON desired that no one should go hungry in this country. This award is recognition of our humble service of leading the cause of nutrition for education amongst government school children through the Akshaya Patra programme. It is an inspiration for me and the entire team at Akshaya Patra to reach out the work of our Foundation to many more hungry children of this country. Quality food for these children is a need for quality education that will in turn create citizens of great character. Our children are the real asset of our nation.”

Under Madhu Pandit Dasa’s inspirational leadership, Akshaya Patra has grown from providing 1500 children with mid-day meals to 1.5 million children in 16 years, becoming the world’s largest NGO-run school lunch programme.
