The New Campus
New Campus Milestone
During Vice President Xi’s visit to Macao, he announced, “the central decided to develop Hengqin.”
The University of Macau formally proposed via the Macao government: “To rent land onHengqin, build a new campus governed by the Macao Government via Macao legal system!”
In June 2009, the People’s congress passed a bill that authorized Macao SAR to exercise jurisdiction over the new UM campus, effectively granting the land-use right to Macao SAR on a lease basis.

Hu Jintao, the then-president of the PRC, officiated at the ground breaking ceremony: “I wish that the University of Macau become a first-class world university!”
The new campus came under the jurisdiction of Macao SAR.

• In reference to RCs of Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, U. Hong Kong, HK Chinese Univ., U. Macau establishes her own RC system.
• RCs are a part of education for the nurture of student development and whole-person education
• Complementary to the Faculty system, RC system aids to the leadership development and the nurturing of soft skills
• Will have 10-12 residential colleges, the largest in Asia
• Each RC has about 500 students from different disciplines and background.
• Masters, Associate Masters, Resident fellows etc. live, dine, learn togetherwith students.
• “Knowledge, practice, attitude”, 「知識、實踐、態度」 are the Motto of the RC System education, through a combination of living and learning programmes and activities

International Programmes and Students Exchange
International ProgrammesThe University of Macau is committed to exploring a wide range of international collaborations with institutions and associations around the world. Our internationalization strategy is largely driven by the potential benefits that these global links and collaborations can bring to our students and scholars.
For Scholars:• Cambridge Clare Hall Visiting Fellowship Programme
(for UM scholars only)- To facilitating academic members in UM to conduct research
and academic collaboration with world-leading scholars and researchers in Clare Hall of Cambridge University.
- One to two Visiting Fellow(s) per academic year (each at a different 6-month period)
• Macao Fulbright Lecturer Programme (for US Fulbright Scholars only)
- Visiting Fulbright Scholar- Fulbright Lecture Series
For Students:• University of California Berkeley Visiting Student
Researcher and Post-Doctoral Affairs Programme- In each academic year, both universities can exchange up to four
qualified students who shall study at the host universities for up to two semesters.
• The International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience (IAESTE) Programme
- An international internship programme: exchange of students for technical experience on a reciprocal basis around the world.
• Erasmus Mundus Mobilities Fellowship- Offer joint masters and doctoral programmes, including a
scholarship scheme, which is designed and implemented by a consortium of European universities.
• Summer Programme- UM offers more than 60 summer programmes to students.

Honours College Aims to concentrate resource to nurture a select group of top undergraduate
students into future pillars of society with creativity, leadership skills and global competitiveness.
Students are required and funded to complete one semester of full time study in another universities, such as University of Michigan, University of Rochester and University of Coimbra, etc.
HC students went abroad for a semester and achieved an average of GPA 3.6 in top universities overseas.
HC graduates got accepted by Oxford University for graduate studies.

There are more than 110 exchange partners
of the University of Macau in 24 countries at most regions of the world, including Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.
Financial Support for Student ExchangeThe Outgoing Exchange Scholarship is set up in 2011 as one of the measures in supporting our exchange students.
Applicants can choose 1 of the 4 types, they are:
Type 1 - Financial Neediness
Type 2 - Academic Standing
Type 3 - Special Recommended Exchange Programmes
Type 4 - Postgraduate Exchange Programmes
Type 5 – UC Berkeley Programme (not open for application)
Maximum amount of MOP 9,000 to MOP 20,000 per semester will vary according to destination countries or regions in 4 zones.

International Events and Activities
To nurture our students with an international perspective, the University of Macau collaborates with consulates and official foreign representatives in organizing talks, consultation sessions and cultural activities that sharpen their views to world.
• Study Abroad Talks: collaborates with DAAD, Campus France, Australian Consulate General, British Council, etc.
• Distinguished Lecture Series (DLS) and Distinguished Diplomatic and Consular Speakers Series (DDCSS): speakers include United Nations Under-Secretary-General, Ministers, and Consuls General, etc.
• International Fair and International Orientation Week: consists of exhibition, networking sessions, talks, briefings, cultural performances, and students activities, etc., at the aim of promoting mobility and raise global exposure of students and scholars.

• Buddy Programme: a volunteer-based program which provides an opportunity to build 1-on-1 relationship between UM Chinese students and foreign exchange students, it is designed to establish more personal contact, to initiate cultural exchange and friendship development.
