EYE SPY WEB EDITORIALFROM THE EDITOR - MARK BIRDSALL
EYE SPY IS SUBSCRIBED TO BY ALL THE WORLD’S LEADING INTELLIGENCE AGENCIES
I remember many years ago a retired head of aMinistry of Defence Desk told me - “never believewhat political pundits say and ignore election
[running] polls.” His wordsresinated in my mind, as itdawned something ofsignificance was happeningin America - this as the 2016presidential election pollstations closed and resultsstarted to be counted.
Few political experts in theUK believed Britons would vote to depart theEuropean Union, and I suspect the same could besaid about the 2016 presidential election. DonaldTrump “could not win,” was a phrase spoken timeand time again by pollsters and those who knowthe machinery of American politics.
Indeed, as election day neared, and with much ofthe media opting to support Hillary Clinton, therewas little sign the Republican candidate (Conserva-tive) would win. Yet he did - a victory which shookthe Washington Establishment to its core.
NEVER SAY NEVER... AS AMERICA VOTES-IN DONALD TRUMPAS 45TH PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES - MAJOR
CHANGES AHEAD FOR THE US INTELLIGENCE COMMUNITY
NEVER SAY NEVER AGAINI suspect Donald Trump regrets some of his pre-election comments, though I hesitate to guess if hewould agree with me. Nevertheless, in a period ofgreat uncertainty and global security fears, whatdoes a Trump White House mean for the world ofintelligence?
Many of President Obama’s ‘old intelligence guard’will be replaced by supporters, friends andcolleagues of the new president. Indeed, Directorof National Intelligence (ODNI) James Clapper, hasalready announced he will be steeping down inJanuary, though he planned to retire whatever theelection result.
There have also been calls for NSA DirectorAdmiral Michael Rogers to go. This would bedamaging in my opinion, as the Agency and CyberCommand are ready to go their own way and theseparation needs to be overseen by an experiencedofficer. And for the record, Rogers is very wellrespected by colleagues and many others workingin intelligence and security. As for Langley, there ismuch talk about Mike Pompeo becoming CIADirector. He knows the intelligence system, but is
Mike Pompeo - NewCIA Director?
NSA Director Michael S. Rogers
James Clapper has heldthe position since 2010
regarded as somewhat of a renegade andhardliner by some intelligence watchers.
And what of James Comey - the FBIDirector who Hillary Clinton believes waspartly responsible for her election loss?Comey announced a week before theelection that the Bureau was reopeningthe investigation into her e-mail usageand other security lapses. I doubthowever, this had anything to do with herdefeat.
Comey was in a ‘no-win’ situation. If he had waited until after the election(and Trump lost) Republicans would have criticised him. And vise versa.Suffice it to say, all of this should have been addressed much earlier.
Donald Trump is already looking to heal domestic and international woundsopened up during the most divisive USA election in years. And whilst he willundoubtedly receive guidance by those who operate within the WashingtonEstablishment, he is also surrounding himself with a circle of very interestingpeople. His relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin is anothertalking point. If the USA and Russia find a solution to events in Syria, it couldsignal the end of ISIS/Daesh in the Middle East.
Another significant event occurred on 25 November in Cuba. Formerpresident and dictator Fidel Castro passed away. Infamous for his brutaltreatment of thousands of ordinary Cubans and his role in the Cold War,Castro’s name will be forever embedded in two significant events - the failedCIA-sponsored operation to remove him known as ‘Bay of Pigs’, and the‘Cuban Missile Crisis’. The hardline Communist was an ally of the USSR andsurvived numerous attempts to eliminate him by the CIA. No doubt manymore tales will now emerge following his death. All in all, 2017 promises to bea very interesting - but potentially dangerous year.
A brief overview of Eye Spy 106 - follows. Enjoy.
