THE HEADMASTER’S DESK

This week I continue with my new series based on the book by Julie Lythcott-Haims entitled “How to Raise an Adult”. CHAPTER ONE When our children are born we immediately begin to reorganise our lives around these little ones. We work hard to, and become consumed with, making the world a safer place for them. We are fearful that the world will in some way harm our children. Our homes get rearranged. Laws are enacted. Children must be strapped into car seats. Knee pads, bicycle helmets and elbow pads must be worn. Children cannot cross streets on their own. An adult always needs to be present. Parents must walk their children into class. Parents carry their children’s school bags. Lythcott-Haims’ first chapter looks at our obsession for keeping children safe and the negative impact this has on developing a healthy sense of independence and an ability to cope with life. Our “Millennial” generation is known as the “Everyone gets a trophy” generation. Just showing up is recognised as an achievement and deserves a reward. We heap praise on our children for every achievement. Lythcott-Haims suggests that this leads to a false sense of worth and a sense of entitlement. Lythcott-Haims also writes about the pervasive tendency to label all conflict on the playground as bullying. She describes intelligent people who love their own children, yet vilify and criminalise other children’s behaviour at primary and preschool level. Such parents, she suggests, seem to be totally unaware that bullying, as by its definition, is rarely if ever committed by young children who are not yet developmentally capable of the act. For example, a child is bonked on the head with a plastic shovel in the sand pit. Bullying? Hypervigilance by adults is imprisoning our children, preventing them from experiencing the kind of life which will prepare our children for adulthood.
