Lumiere, comprising the talents of Sony recording artists Éilís Kennedy andPauline Scanlon, are one of the most t alked-about vocal acts to emerge fromIreland in recent times. ‘Deftly blending traditional and modern idioms,Kennedy’s long lithe luminous harmonies blend with Scanlon’s evocativeethereality to conjure a sound that manages to be hauntingly timeless andelegantly fresh’ (Songlines). Both from Dingle in County Kerry, Lumiere take theage-old songs and reinvigorate them simply and beautifully, reclaiming theirbeauty for the modern age. They offer a distinctly feminine sound and feel, where voice is the primary instrument and Ireland as motherland is re-imagined.
One of Ireland’s newest folk talents, Noriana Kennedy has a rare gift of beingable to connect with any listener through understatement and simplicity.Likened by many to a young Mary Black, she represents the new generation ofIrish folk singers with an engaging and unique songbook that crosses oceansfrom Waterford to America, Scotland and a thousand heart-worn places inbetween. Her debut album Ebb n Flow marked the first assured steps into whatpromises to be a long journey along folk’s storied path: ‘a terrific CD reflectiveof the new reality that is young Irish roots music today’ (Brian Donovan, A CelticSojourn, Radio WGBH, Boston).
The fourth Celtic Diva is Nicola Joyce, who is best known as the lead singer ofGráda, one of Ireland’s most successful touring bands. Whether she singsancient Irish songs, contemporary folk or her own original pieces, Joyce’sperformance is remarkably heartfelt and honest. As a full-time touring musicianfor the past six years (including two Australian visits with Gráda), Nicola hasplayed in 30 countries around the world and performed alongside some of itsgreatest musicians. ‘But,’ she admits, ‘no matter where you travel it’s hard tofind better than a good Irish song .’ From Galway, Nicola has released twocritically acclaimed albums to date. The latest, Natural Angle, was recorded withGrammy Award-winning producer Tim O’Brien, and was named one of the TopFive Folk Albums of 2010 by the USA’s National Public Radio. ‘Joyce is amagnificent vocalist who sings with sheer beauty and poignancy’ (Earl Hitchner,Wall Street Journal).
