Community Workshop: Painted Memories on Tiles Saturday, September 610 am —5 pminstructor: Nicole Aquillano, SCC Artist-in-Residencelevel: allBeinspiredbythearchitectureandurbancharm of Pittsburgh’s historic Strip District! Students will reference recent and archival photos as they paint their impressions of the Strip onto pre-made tiles, forever memorializing this unique and vibrant neighborhood. Completed tiles will be fired and ready for pick-up the following day.

Weekend of Clay Saturday & SundayOctober 25 & 2610 am—5 pmH visiting artists: Lauren Mabry, Julie Moon, and Peter Morgan, Philadelphia, PAlevel: allSpend the weekend with three Transformation 9: Contemporary Works in Ceramics exhibition artists! Saturday’s workshop, led by Julie Moon, will focus on ceramic materials and processes to create jewelry and adornments for the body. A number of forming and finishing techniques will also be covered. On Sunday, Lauren Mabry will instruct students in the basics of painting with low fire colored slips and underglazes. The workshop will focus on achieving colorful, expressive surfaces through techniques such as brushing, slip trailing, and monoprinting on ceramic slabs. Peter Morgan will be on hand both days to demonstrate his hand-building and glazing techniques, as well as present his unique methods of working with Egyptian Paste.

Students will learn to safely deconstruct tin cans and incorporate them into jewelry designs. Cutting, forming, soldering, and image transfer will be covered.

This workshop covers all the basics, including: fiber variation, mould building, pulp processing, western sheet forming, embossing, watermarks, embellishing, wet-on-wet collage, drying, and pressing. Surface design and three-dimensional structural options will also be discussed.


Paste PapersSaturday, October 410 am—5 pminstructor: Kitty Spanglerlevel: allDecorative paste paper is a fun, fast, and easy way to make beautiful, handmade paper for use in book arts, special wrapping paper, cards, boxes, and more. This workshop is a must for color lovers and those who enjoy visual texture, strong or subtle.


Coptic BindingSunday, October 1910 am—5 pminstructor: Kitty Spanglerlevel: allThe Coptic bookbinding technique is perfect for hand-bound sketchbooks and journals. This stitching style allows the book to be opened flat anywhere within its pages. Students will take home a beautifully finished book for personal use or to give as a unique handmade gift.


Plants to PaperSaturday & SundayNovember 8 & 99 am—4 pminstructor: Katy Dementlevel: allLearn traditional Eastern papermaking while processing and beating plant fibers from the kitchen, yard, garden, and roadside. In this two-day workshop, students will collect various plants, including Japanese Knot weed, and experiment with processing the fibers. The dry sheets will be bound into a simple recipe book.

Color to Dye ForSaturday, September 1310 am—5 pmH visiting artist: Dena Gershon, Kent, OHlevel: allNo matter if you're already a dedicated fiber enthusiast or someone who loves color and is interested in trying something new, this one-day workshop will provide you with the experience to safely create luscious hand-dyed fiber. Students will work with protein fibers, using fine materials such as merino wool and silk in a variety of forms. The workshop is suited for a wide variety of fiber artists, including spinners, felters, and knitters.


Artful EntanglementsSunday, September 1410 am—5 pmH visiting artist: Dena Gershon, Kent, OHlevel: allCreate a unique work of wearable art using one of the earliest known textile techniques—felting. Laminated felt (Nuno felt) is a variation of wet-felting in which wool’s natural tendencies are explored to the fullest. Students will create luxurious lightweight fabric that drapes beautifully and has virtually limitless textural and design possibilities.


H Dena’s workshops are co-sponsored by the Fiberarts Guild of Pittsburgh. Students that register for both days will be able to use the hand-dyed materials from Saturday’s workshop in the creation of their laminated felt piece during Sunday’s workshop. (Students registered for both days will also have reduced materials fees.)

Shibori ScarvesSaturday, November 110 am—4 pminstructor: Amy DiPlacidolevel: allAdd some fashion to your winter apparel with a Shibori scarf! Shibori is a Japanese method of dyeing cloth by binding, stitching, folding, twisting, and compressing. This workshop will introduce students to immersion dyeing with dyes on silk. Each student will dye a silk scarf in the arashi shibori method, which translates to"winddrivenrain."


Needle Felted OrnamentsSaturday, December 610 am—5 pminstructor: Susan Swarthoutlevel: allLearn to sculpt with wool! Using needles that grab fibers and tangle them together into felted shapes, students will craft small, soft three-dimensional ornaments using beautifully dyed wool.

Luminescent Backlit Sculptures Sunday, September 219 am—5 pminstructor: Wanda Spangler-Warrenlevel: allCreate a luminous backlit sculpture to hang on your wall. Students will learn to use the properties of natural reed to create an armature over which they will form translucent, layered paper surfaces for their sculptures.


Polymer Clay: Hollow Form VesselsSaturday, November 110 am—5 pminstructor: Laura Tabakmanlevel: intermediateLearn to make a hollow form in polymer clay! Students will make moulds and produce the inside layer of hollow beads, pendants, or vessels. Different closing mechanisms will be explored. Surface design and finishing techniques will also be taught. This workshop is best suited for students with some experience in polymer clay.


Wire Crochet Bracelet Thursday, November 611 am—3 pminstructor: Judith Gentilelevel: allCreate an eye-catching bracelet of glass beads and natural stones. After stringing hand-selected beads onto wire, students will crochet an attractive piece of jewelry using a basic stitch. A kit containing a crochet hook, wire, beads, and natural stones will be provided.

Students will assemble “wearable portraits” from a variety of found objects and sentimental mementos, including old photos, collectibles, and vintage and contemporary knick-knacks. Final projects can take the form of a brooch, necklace, pendant, or small wall piece. The possibilities are endless!

Introduction to Glass Beads on the TorchThursday, October 29 am—12 pmlevel: allExplore the exciting medium of flameworked hot glass beadmaking using a portable “Hot Head” torch and Italian glass rods. Students will learn the fundamentals of working with a torch and will make three to six solid-colored glass beads on a mandrel. This class is a prerequisite for Darlene’s other glass bead workshops.
