Rich in history and social significance, the Miss America Organization is a not-for-profit organiza-tion that has maintained a tradition for many de-cades of empowering young women to achieve their personal and professional goals, while providing a forum in which to express their opinions, talent and intelligence. Scholarships have been the corner-stone of the Miss America program since 1945 when Bess Myerson was the first Miss America to receive a scholarship from the Organization.
Participating in the Miss America system not only helps you pay for college and prepare for a career, it also provides an opportunity to gain additional life experience, working on issues of importance to society, enhancing your personal and professional skills and developing your performance-related and other talents.
The mission of the Miss Central South Texas/ Miss Tip of South Texas Scholarship Organization is to provide financial assistance to students for higher education through yearly scholarships, as well as

Wine grape is grown all over Texas and represents an in-dustry that is expanding rapidly as growers perfect their stock, and as public acceptability of Texas wines have grown.
Now the 5th largest in the country, The Texas wine industry (fifth largest in the U.S.) is producing an economic impact of over 1.7 billion dollars for the Texas economy. Now, the largest vineyard based in the Rio Grande Valley has become the largest bottler as well, as Jorge Jaber began his first bot-tling of Blanc du Bois and Spanish Reds in mid febuary.
The whites harvested last June and the reds in July, their del-icate juices brewed in vats for the several months and where then, transferred to hickory barrels to allow the wine to mel-low. Jaber says, “Its all about the climate. Great grapes are found all around the world now. We have grown the same great stock here with the help of the Texas A & M Extension Service. The question is, how did the climate fair here and in the different parts of the world where wine stock is grown.”

Now, the wine will be tested for taste, ap-pearance and bouquet as it brings out it’s hidden traits and establishes its character over time. After testing a sampling of the red, right from the vat tap and not yet aged in barrel, I was in pleasant surprise with the fragrant scent, fruity taste and smooth finish that should show well as the bottling process evolves.
According to the Texas A&M Extension Ser-vice, wine-making in Texas dates back to the early 1600’s when spanish explorers and mis-sionaries brought grape cuttings from Europe for sacramental wine production. Later, as other european settlers arrived in Texas, they too, introduced their grapevines. But, Jaber’s harvest has no resemblance to these older va-rieties.

Jones & Jones hosted the Gypsy Trunk Show in their showroom on Feb. 10th through the 14th for a fabulous display of the timeless artistry of the handcrafted Gypsy Collection jewelry that is produced using methods per-fected hundreds of years ago by the Ottoman Empire.
The process begins with a transformation of the design into a mold using the lost wax method. The molds are then poured with brass to form a base for the jewelry. It is then hand polished and gold plated. At last, each piece is adorned with pearls, vintage fabrics, silks, crystal and natural stones including onyx, tur-quoise, jade and coral.
The Gypsy Collection is paired here with de-signer fashion wear by CHAN LUU. Chan Luu’s trademark is her artistic skill in combin-ing organic materials with contemporary ideas to create a line that’s unique, wearable, and handmade.
Originally from Vietnam, Chan moved to Boston in 1972 and earned a B.A. in Busi-ness Administration from Boston University. In pursuit of her dream to become a fashion designer, she moved to Los Angeles in 1975 to enroll in the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. Shortly thereafter she opened her own boutique specializing in European de-signer clothing and accessories for women. In 1996, she formed Chan Luu, Inc. and began designing her own jewelry and accessories.
Her creations first became famous after film stars and other celebrities started showing a preference for her designs, including Gisele Bundchen, Jessica Alba, Jennifer Aniston, and many more in recent years. Her contem-porary clothing line is now available at Jones & Jones in north McAllen, located on N.10th Street in Uptown Plaza.

John Gillespie Magee, Jr. died in a midair collision while flying a British Spitfire at the age of 19 over the hamlet of Roxholme. He was an American serving in the RAF in 1941 during the second world war.
Gillespie was inspired to write the poem after climbing to an altitude of 33,000 feet in his Spitfire Mk-1. And, in it, he masterfully describes the experience as something which brought him closer to God. He finished the poem
later that day and shared it with his commanding officer before sending it to his parents in a letter.
Since then, the poem, High Flight, by this young and tal-ented pilot has been an inspiration to aviators around the globe, to members of the USAF and the Canadian Air Force. As a young boy, I became accustomed to hearing it as a sign-off on local TV channels around 12am, back in the day.
HIGH FLIGHT
Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings; Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and swung High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there, I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung My eager craft through footless halls of air....
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace. Where never lark, or even[8] eagle flew — And, while with silent lifting mind I have trod The high untrespassed sanctity of space, - Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.
John Gillespie Magee, Jr.

When you walk past the wildscape garden at The University of Texas-Pan American, you will notice something different: a 3-foot by 3-foot bronze memorial plaque honoring veterans of the five branches of the military.
The plaque, which sits on a large stone base, was installed Dec. 8 in the garden. UTPA has since renamed the garden The University of Texas-Pan American Veterans Memorial Garden.
In the United States, there were only six veteran memorials on college campuses. UTPA is now the seventh campus to put up a veteran’s memorial. Ysasi considers this a great honor to all veterans and to the University.
“I am a veteran and I can tell you that when I first saw the plaque, I got emotional because I think it’s so amazing to be part of an institu-tion that truly recognizes and acknowledges those who have served,” said Ysasi. “There are staff, faculty and students who have already walked by the plaque and have told me that their hearts melted when they saw this because they feel that the University is looking out for our veterans.”
The plaque’s design and creation was overseen by a committee of administrators, staff and faculty. They were assisted by Rio Grande Valley native, and well-known sculptor, Douglas Clark, a part-time faculty member, who created the statues located at the Veteran’s Memorial in McAllen.
“We would like the public to know about the efforts our University has made to honor our veterans and that we recognize their bravery and sacrifice,” said Ysasi. “Our University was recently deemed mili-tary friendly and this is one of the reasons why.”
Ysasi, a Navy veteran who is currently working on his doctoral degree in rehabilitative counseling at UTPA, said he feels more should be done for our veterans.
“I can tell you that a lot of veterans don’t get the recognition they deserve. They need to be embraced, acknowledged, heard and un-derstood,” said Ysasi. “Most, if not all veterans, wish for a simple ‘Thank You’ for what they’ve done for our country. This memorial is our way of saying ‘Thank You’ and making our veterans feel welcome at UTPA.”
For more information, contact Ysasi, Manager of the Veteran Services Center, UTPA. (956) 665-7934.manager of the Veteran Services Center at UTPA.

The tradition began 3 years ago, here at the Club, when I was contemplating how to bring more Christmas spirit to the clubhouse during the holidays. Now, its is a major conversation piece and photo opportunity for our mem-bers as it spreads the scent of Gingerbread all about the clubhouse in December.
For Christmas I raised the bar and made a Ginger Bread Castle for the holidays. My first was a Traditional Ginger Bread House in 2009 that was almost the same size. The second was a Ginger Bread Log Cabin 2010.
The castle stood seven feet tall, six feet wide and was six feet long. It had lots of detail ic-ing work on it and was filled with candies and cookies. It also had Xmas trees and a lighted chandelier inside of the castle with a tree in the middle, surrounded by ornamental gifts.
Quite exciting, besides the stunning captivat-ing scene at the clubhouse entry, is the ginger bread smell you detect even before entering into the club house. As we start work on it each year the scent of gingerbread in the air announces the coming of the holidays for us here at the club and around the Greater McAllen area.
We do this project every year to spread the holiday cheer to all that enter the club and to get my culinary brigade ready for the season. I love doing things like this and so does my staff! It makes us feel special and proud of our work here at the Club at Cimarron.

A new Class of Oxygen UsersFreeStyle offers a uniquely efficient, ultra-compact, and flexible pulse-flow delivery system. Through this miniaturization into a wearable unit, a new class of oxygen users has emerged: Self-reliant individuals who are satisfied only when experiencing life to the fullest. For some that means travel across the country or travel around the world. For others, it’s doing the garden chores on the weekend, unrestricted by time. For still others, it is the exhilaration in attending a grandchild’s outdoor soccer match – carefree – or even trying your footwork at soccer yourself once again.
Now oxygen patients just like you are experiencing total freedom for the first time – all with the help of FreeStyle. And only AirSep Corporation, a leading
manufacturer of high-quality medical equipment for home, hospital, and clinical use, makes this pos-sible. AirSep is the most experienced oxygen manufacturer, including the devel-opment of the
industry’s first POC. AirSep POCs are permitted onboard commercial airlines*, which means your journey with oxygen is wherever you wish to go.
*FreeStyle has received the US Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) accep-tance for onboard, in-flight use by oxygen passengers on commercial airlines via a 2006 amendment to SFAR 106.For a list of airlines that accept passengers with FreeStyle POCs, reference www.airsep.com. Please check directly with the individual airlines with which you would like to travel for up-to-date information on their specific POC policies.
Oxygen with no BoundariesWhen you were initially diagnosed with having a need for oxygen therapy (perhaps your physician called it chronic obstructive pulmonary disease [COPD] or another ailment), it may have been hard to imagine at the time that you would ever live life to the fullest again. But through the use of the unique FreeStyle™ Portable Oxygen Concentrator by AirSep®, you truly can experience oxygen with no boundaries!
The Only “Wearable” Oxygen ConcentratorFreeStyle is the world’s lightest, most compact, and only “wearable” portable oxygen concentrator (POC) available. A POC makes its own oxygen, as needed, everywhere you go. And because the portable oxygen concentrator enables you to be free of the need for oxygen refills and deliveries, you are never limited to where you go or how far you venture.

California this summer to meet with music producers. All along he is working hard on internet promotions like YouTube where Any Flow has received over 16,000 plays since his first single was released early this month. Much of the time he is adapting to crazy schedules, meetings, late night recordings, and a major project with Satellite Radio for Any Flow. In these photos Jeremiah appears with his band while producing a music video in Donna with video models from Missy’s Models.
Originally from Dallas, Texas, Jeremiah Jay loves to dance, write music, and hang out with his friends. He is determined and hum-ble about his recent acclamations, and still likes to walk the mall, travel, and keep fit by working out daily. He values his faith, family, friends and his growing number of fans who find his music special and unique.

Although the stocks are all pruned back from his young plants, you can already start to see new wood stock emerging with leafy sprouts as business inside the production shed builds. Once the processing activity is completed and the bottles are packaged, the wait be-gins again as he discovers just how good the climate was after all in South Texas last spring and summer.
Jaber is being plans to expand the 13 acres of vinyard and production facilities this spring, and incorporate an event center on the ranch so people can come see how wine is made, or for the purpose of weddings and other large events. The new event center will be centrally located with great views of the vineyards, and tours will be scheduled for curious visitors.
Jaber’s vineyard should become, over time, a facinating place to visit during harvest time in the summer, or anytime, if you want to taste his wine! His pioneering spirit is Valley style and we wish him a prosperous year, a good yield and harvest in 2012!
