The contextual, pre-war inspired, silhouette reflects a sophisticated appreciation of the neighborhood’s iconic apartment houses; timeless architecture reinterpreted for a modern lifestyle.

A discerning sense of arrival is achieved by the textured glass and metal marquee in bronze finish and the bronze-finished double entry doors. The bronze-finished tracery welcomes

natural light into the two-story lobby, designed by Alexandra Champalimaud, while providing privacy for residents and guests.

The lobby is detailed with Shagreen paneling, White Travertine flooring, a custom Concierge Desk, and a sculptural

contemporary lighting installation. A subtle ramp at the entry for strollers, suitcases, and other resident needs provides easy

access. Services include a twenty-four hour concierge and cold storage.

The Chamberlain’s pre-war inspired layouts offer formal entry galleries, composed enfilade vistas, and a clear separation between public and private areas. The gracious homes are enhanced with natural light from the oversized, bronze

accented windows and ten-foot ceilings.

Alexandra Champalimaud is celebrated for designing some of the most significant residential and hospitality

commissions in the world including The Carlyle, The Dorchester, and Hotel Bel-Air.

Great design isn’t based in materiality or finishes. It is based in thoughtfulness. Studying and playing with proportions and

flow to deliver layouts that enhance life for the residents. It’s about making the windows extra large, raising ceiling heights,

and creating a sense of space that mimics the classic homes on Riverside Drive and Central Park West with the added benefits

of state-of-the-art infrastructure and design including extraordinary kitchens and baths.““

Reflecting an appreciation of natural light, the spacious Great Rooms are distinguished by distinctive architectural details including corner window bays or Juliet balconies. Tailored finishes throughout the residence include

Designed by FXFOWLE and Alexandra Champalimaud, each full-floor residence offers a pre-war sensibility with a refined

separation between the entertaining and private spaces.

The west wing is designed for entertaining with a seamless flow between the living room, dining room, and kitchen. A windowed gallery leads to the east wing where each bedroom includes an

en-suite bath. The exceptional Master Suites offer Juliet balconies and windowed dressing rooms and five-fixture Master Baths.

Contemporary enhancements include walls of windows on all four sides, wrap-around corner exposures, spacious eat-in

kitchens with separate cooking islands, windowed master baths, and unique private terraces.


On the south façade at the top three floors, dormers have been addedto create extensions to the residences, forming a series of terracedsetbacks. Within the apartments, these south-facing “sun rooms”

have corner views with multiple exposures. The oversized windows,on all four sides of each penthouse, offer amazing views out

to the neighborhood skyline and Hudson River.““

Setting the stage for spectacular entertaining, the Living Rooms are framed by aluminum, bronze finished casement windows that capture cinematic exposures

of the iconic West Side cityscape as well as sunset vistas over Riverside Park.

The Upper West Side is renowned for some of the most iconic apartment buildings in New York. How did the locale inspire your design?

: The Upper West Side is a lively and charming neighborhood with its close proximity to Columbus Circle and the Hudson River. The area is rich in arts and is one of the city’s cultural centers. I love that you can easily walk to the Lincoln Center or the Beacon Theatre to watch a performance or have a night out. It’s the perfect neighborhood for families with so many enriching activities to take part in and an area that offers an unparalleled park access to New York’s iconic Central Park, Riverside Park and Hudson River Greenway. Lovely shops and restaurants give the Upper West Side a distinct New York Feel.

How do you design memorable spaces, where people want to return? What are some of the things you need to consider in such design?

In general I find that people all over the world are looking for higher quality and integrity in design. Universally, people want to express their individuality through more highly personalized, bespoke designs – both in architecture and interiors. I like to design spaces that are well proportioned, detailed beautifully, layered, open, fluid and easy on the eye. I design with consistency and longevity in mind. No two designs are the same but there are common threads throughout our work. Whether a residence is primary or used only occasionally, people look to a designer to create an environment and living experience that is beyond their expectation and their needs… more than what they were consciously aware that they wanted.

As The Chamberlain is a boutique offering, you mentioned that you were able to devote considerable time to the design of each home. Can you Articulate the features that underscore the idea of thoughtful luxury?

Luxury takes many forms including exclusivity, privacy, customization, personal service and convenience but ultimately luxury living is a state of being – the feeling of being nurtured, and comforted. Within our design for The Chamberlain, we incorporated the best appliances – SubZero and Wolf for kitchens, TOTO and Dornbracht for the bathrooms – which gives a modern approach to classic living. The floor plans are open and gracious in scale, which is hard to find in New York City. The Chamberlain is exclusive by virtue of its location and the bespoke nature of our design and furnishings.

How do you envision people utilizing the residences? Can you walk us through The Chamberlain Experience?

Creating a memorable space is all about the first impression. The atmosphere needs to stun and provoke; it needs to have that ‘wow’ effect, even if it is a quiet place. Entering the building, owners are welcome by a jewel of a reception, which reinforces the splendor of the complete Chamberlain experience. The lobby gives you a sense of place and sets the tone for the rest of the property. The lobby, library, lounge are contemporary, sophisticated and refined. Units are inviting and subtly luxurious. The beautiful garden is serene and offers a unique social experience. All spaces are well proportioned, layered and timeless.
