ATHLETIC Visitors Guide

April 5, 1946 – Governor Thomas L. Bailey approves House Bill No. 700, Charter No. 327 which had been passed by the House of Representatives on Mach 20, 1946 and by the Senate on April 1, 1946 to establish Mississippi Vocational College March 1, 1950 – Dr. James Herbert White becomes the first president of Mississippi Vocational College February 10, 1950 – Governor Fielding L. Wright and Dr. James H. White turn the first spades of dirt at groundbreaking signifying the birth of Mississippi Vocational College. Authorized by the Board of Trustees of Institutes of Higher Learning to offer the Bachelor of Science degree in academic areas and certificates in terminal course programs Summer 1950 – Classes begin with 305 in-service teachers at the Leflore County Training School in Itta Bena 1950 – 1951 – First Academic year opened with14 regular students and seven faculty members on Mississippi Vocational College campus May 17 – 18, 1953 – First graduation exercises held with 12 graduates receiving Bachelor of Science degrees. First graduating class of Mississippi Vocational College 1964 – The Mississippi State Legislature passed House Bill No. 610 officially changing the name of Mississippi Vocational College to Mississippi Valley State College. The college was authorized to offer the Liberal Arts degree, as well as the Science and the Education degree December 1968– The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools grants accreditation to Mississippi Valley State College July 1, 1971 – Dr. Earnest A. Boykins becomes the second president of Mississippi Valley State College March 15, 1974 – The Honorable Governor William A. Waller signs into law House Bill No. 298 granting university status to Mississippi Valley State College. The institution has been known as Mississippi Valley State University since 1976 – Mississippi Valley State University opened its Graduate Program. It offers the Master of Science degree in Environmental Health, Elementary Education, and Criminal Justice. January 11, 1982 – Dr. Joe L. Boyer becomes the third president of Mississippi Valley State University July 1, 1988 – Dr. William W. Sutton becomes the fourth president of Mississippi Valley State University July 1, 1998 – Dr. Lester C. Newman becomes the fifth president of Mississippi Valley State University January 2001 – The Greenville Higher Education Center an off-campus MVSU site opens 2005 – Graduate program expands to offer a Master’s degree in Social Work 2006 – Graduate Studies once again offers another Masters degree this time in Bioinformatics Fall 2006 – The MBA program in the Department of Business Administration began January 1, 2009 – Dr. Donna H. Oliver becomes the first female and sixth president of Mississippi Valley State University June 2009 – Implemented the Renaissance Learning Program. The first program is a degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Organizational Management

November 6, 2013 – Dr. William B. Bynum Jr. becomes the 7th President of Mississippi Valley State University
