WELCOME!
St. Patrick Parish is committed to
the Eucharist and guided by the
Holy Spirit, strives to be a

GOSPEL REFLECTION
HOW GOOD IS YOUR SECOND ACT?
I had a drama teacher in college, whose favorite question was: “How good is your second act?” She would ask
this question even before she looked at our script. Many of us aspiring playwrights had a wonderful first act,
well developed and suspenseful, but could not sustain the interest in the second act. She would say, “the first
act can incite curiosity, but the second act must sustain the interest!”
This is also the message of John’s gospel. The multitudes were following Jesus. They wanted miracles.
They wanted to see signs and wonders; water turning to wine, the multiplication of loaves, or else they
wanted healing. But Jesus told them, “You are welcome to follow. But this is only the first act of faith. To have
a deeper, more mature faith, you must join in my work, you must become my disciple.”
This is the significance of the two types of bread: material bread and spiritual bread. Jesus is telling his
followers to move from material hunger to spiritual hunger; to move from the first act to the second; from
being follower to being disciple.
Here is the difference between the follower and the disciple:
A follower asks God to take care of his personal needs; a disciple thinks of community needs.
For a follower, personal agenda comes first; for a disciple, the common good comes first.
For a follower, today it is ‘Yes’, tomorrow it is ‘Maybe’; For a disciple, it is always ‘Yes’.
This was the story of Mary Magdalene (Feast, July 22nd). At first, she was a follower of Jesus. After
Jesus had healed her of an illness, she was ever grateful and became his disciple. She spent all her money,
time and energy on the ministry of Jesus. She remained loyal to the very end, to the cross. She was the First
Witness of the resurrection, she is called ‘Apostle to the apostles’, and the “disciple par excellence”.
Like Mary Magdalene, our faith must move from asking God to take care of our personal needs to
being willing to serve God’s community.
Fr John D’Mello
It is with mixed feelings that we say farewell to Alan. A feeling of sadness to see him go, and yet happiness to
see him putting his needs first. Alan first joined our staff in May of 2008. We had the fortunate opportunity to
see him grow over the years into a valuable member of our team. Most of us who have worked with Alan, have
found him to be a very conscientious, professional, and hard-working individual. Alan’s outgoing and friendly
personality helped to create a pleasant environment to work in and he is held in high regard by his
colleagues. His contributions have been a great benefit to this organization and, undeniably, he will be deeply
missed here. It is definitely our loss and his family’s gain. We have no doubt that wherever Alan’s journey
takes him, he will continue to improve himself as well as enrich the lives of those around him. Let’s all join
together in wishing Alan the very best of luck and the greatest of success in all his future endeavors.
Best wishes,
The Saint Patrick Family

MINISTRIES
Elementary Faith Formation:
This weekly classroom-style religious education is designed to follow the 9:30 am Sunday
Mass so families can attend Mass together and then elementary-age students can attend
Faith Formation sessions immediately after it. This year we will continue using St. Mary’s
Press Discover! Finding Faith in Life, weekly lesson plans. One of the best things about this
program is The Catholic Children’s Bible, which each student will receive. This Scripture text
is translated into kid-friendly terms and accented with pictures and descriptions that bring
to life the relevant Bible stories each week. Classes will begin Sunday, September 12, 2021
First Holy Communion Prep:
This class is designed for students entering into the 2nd grade to prepare for their First Holy
Communion which will take place in the spring of 2022 and First Reconciliation, which
typically takes place in January. Throughout the year they will work through the BLESSED:
First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion Books with characters Ben, Sarah, and their
pet gerbil Hemingway as they learn about how blessed we are to be members of the
largest family in the world.

FAITH FORMATION
Middle School Faith Formation:
This year we are excited to launch a hybrid
model of faith formation which blends both
the educational classroom methods with
interactive and relationship-building youth
group methods. We will be following
Lifeteen’s EDGE curriculum with the middle
school students as it provides a safe fun
place for youth to find a solid Catholic
community, to get answers to their
questions about faith, and, most
importantly, to experience Jesus in a
profound and personal way.
Confirmation Prep:
This program is designed for students who are in 8th -12th grade. Like all Sacraments, there
is not a correct age or time to receive a Sacrament but there is some preparation that
needs to complete before taking on the responsibility that comes with the Sacrament.
Here at St. Patrick’s we do require students to be at least in the 8th grade before they begin
preparing for Confirmation but the program is open to anyone in the 8th - 12th grades.
“Chosen: Your Journey Toward Confirmation” takes young people on a journey through the
entire Catholic faith in all its richness and vitality. Teens will be captivated by the story, from
Creation all the way through salvation history, and they will come to see how the
Sacraments, prayer, and discipleship are the keys to a happy life.
A Family of Faith:
We are excited to continue with the Family of
Faith program for those families who wish to
participate. We will meet monthly on the first
Monday of the month with both parents and
students having their own sessions. Parents
will then take homework to complete with
their children before returning the
following month. This year we will be going
over the Sacraments and how they reveal
God’s love to us.
Women’s Bible Study:
Join the Women of our parish as we come together to explore and grow deeper in our faith.
This fall we will be meeting weekly on Tuesday evenings from 7:00 – 9:00 pm.
We will begin after Labor Day in the Fall.
Sunday, August 1st | 18th Sunday of Ordinary Time

FAITH FORMATION
Homeschool Scripture Class:
This year I am looking forward to hosting
God’s Plan in Scripture (GPS) which is based
on “The Great Adventure Kids Bible Timeline”
for students who are homeschooled. God’s
Plan in Scripture (GPS) is a parish program
designed to take children on an amazing
journey through the story of salvation. The
Storybook helps children and families learn
the Bible together using the same color-
coding and chronological approach as the
adult Great Adventure Bible Timeline®.
The School of Christian Formation:
The School of Christian Formation for the Diocese of Palm Beach is offering a series of
classes and programs here for adult Catholics who wish to learn more about the rich
traditions of their Faith. Each course meets on Tuesday
evenings from 7:00- 9:00 pm for a total of six classes. Two courses are taught during the fall
and two during the spring. You may attend individual courses for credit or follow the entire
three-year program. This year we will be doing an overview of the Bible with four courses
over the academic year. They will include:
Introduction to the Bible with Diane Kent – August 17th - September 21st
Old Testament with Fr. John D’Mello – October 12th – November 16th
New Testament with Patti Amann – January 4th- February 8th
Christology with Andrea Cook – Feb 22nd – Mar 29th
Young Women’s Study Group:
Endow (Educating on the Nature and
Dignity of Women) seeks to educate
women toward a more profound
understanding of their God-given dignity
through study in small group communities
of faith and friendship. Rooted in the
teachings of Pope St. John Paul II, Endow
affirms the genius of women – the feminine
genius – and empowers them to fulfill our
culture’s desperate need for an authentic
feminine presence in every aspect of life and
society. We meet Bi-Weekly on Tuesday
evenings from 7:30-9:00 pm. Ongoing.
Men’s Morning Bible Study:
The Parish Bible Study for men provides an opportunity for increased spiritual growth.
The study will focus on the upcoming Sunday Mass readings and how they might apply
to our love today. Our meetings last approximately one hour and will be held on
Wednesdays at 9:30 am. There is no cost and nothing to purchase. The studies are being
coordinated by Deacon Joe with assistance from others. We hope all men of the parish
will take advantage of this hour to grow in faith and fellowship as we continue to
build up the community of St. Patrick. Ongoing

FAITH FORMATION
Adult Faith Formation - THE SEARCH:
As Catholics, we know life is a beautiful
mystery. Now explore the depths of that
mystery and what it means for you. What is
this journey in between the event we call
“birth” and the one we call “death”? Is the
journey taking you somewhere, or are you
leading yourself to some kind of destination –
a destination that could extend beyond your
last breath? What do you want from your life
during the in-between? The questions are
there. And, the answers are too. Join us on
Wednesday evenings from 7:00-8:30 as we
explore life’s big questions.
The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA):
Are you looking to join the Catholic Church? Do you want to receive the Sacraments of
Initiation? (Baptism, Holy Communion or Confirmation) Or are you a cradle Catholic
looking to learn more about the Catholic Church and grow deeper in your faith? If you fit
any of these, RCIA might be a good place for you to start. It is a journey in which you
experience support, discovery, and fellowship. It is for any adult who is looking to start or
deepen their faith journey by preparing to receive any of the Sacraments of Initiation or for
anyone who is looking to learn more about their Catholic faith and grow deeper in it.
Classes at St Patrick's are held on Thursday Evenings from 7:00 - 8:30 pm September – May.
Adult Virtual Faith Formation:
After this past year many of our parishioners
enjoyed participating in an online group
session and so we are going to continue
offering one this next year. Join us as we
learn more about our faith through dynamic
video presentations and small group
discussions. This fall we will be diving into
Augustin Institutes’ “Symbolon”. “Symbolon:
The Catholic Faith Explained” is a systematic
presentation of our Catholic Faith. It will lead
you through the "big picture" of the Catholic
Faith and our Creed is the guide. “Symbolon”
brings together some of the most trusted
Catholic teachers in the world to guide you
through the breadth and richness of the
Catholic faith.

SUPPORTING THE PARISH
Families with Tots:
All families with children under 6 years
old are invited to join us for a time of
family fellowship. We hope this new Faith
Formation session will be an opportunity
for families to bond and grow healthy,
fun, and supportive relationships for our
parish home! We will meet on the second
Saturday of each month at 9:30 am. Each
session is for the whole family and we will
be diving deeper into ways to grow in our
faith for tots to parents.
Panorama of the Old Testament:
Explore the sweeping saga of God's
people and their sacred journey.
Panorama of the Old Testament surveys
the variety of books found in the Old
Testament. Uncover interwoven themes,
the background of familiar characters,
and God's overall plan of salvation. A
perfect way to begin a great adventure or
step back and see where you have been
in your study of the Bible. Commentary,
study and reflection questions, prayer,
and access to online lectures are
included. Presented by Deacon Bob
Rodriguez, a guest teacher from a local
Diocesan Parish.

PEACE—ST. PATRICK JUSTICE MINISTRY
SVdP was able to assist a disabled woman with a disabled son last week. This woman was
financially unable to put her car back on the road, so SVdP paid for her car repair,
as well as her auto insurance and registration.
Another disabled woman with a disabled daughter fell behind on her electric bill when
she needed to replace a broken refrigerator. She had no money left over for FPL, so SVdP
paid her electric bill so she was not in danger of having her power shut off.

AROUND THE COMMUNITY
My Grandparents’ Journey
My niece and I have been
working on our family genealogy. My
mother was a first-generation
American and ancestors on my
father’s side arrived in the 1860s. All of
them came because there were not
enough jobs in their homeland and
survival was a problem. At that time
there were no restrictions or quotas –
only a sponsor and a cursory medical
exam on arrival was required.
Today we are faced with
another stream of immigrants who,
like my forebears, come to find a
better life and future. However, now
we have restrictive quotas of who
and how many can enter from other
countries. For some the wait list is 20
years. Others have come on visas and
overstayed their time; which is the
vast majority of those so-called
"illegal," even though they have been
here for years working, paying taxes,
and educating their children.
Employers hire them because of the
shortage of workers in low-wage jobs.
Many are deported and families are
split up because they have no avenue
to citizenship. They suffer prejudice
and discrimination.
The Florida Council of
Catholic Bishops (2011) have
challenged us to re-think our views
and attitudes on immigration. The
Bishops do not endorse illegal
immigration, but suggest that we
need to find ways and means to
support a temporary worker program
that eventually leads to permanent
residency. They call for an “attitude
change” and a reform of the “entire
system” rather than merely enforcing
the border. They suggest that we
stop looking at the undocumented
as second-class citizens.
Recently, the U.S. Senate held
a hearing on “The American Dream
and Promise Act” which would
establish a legal pathway to
citizenship for Dreamers. You can
reach out to your senators to support
this bill.
The Auxiliary Bishop of
Washington, Mario Dorsonville, in his
Statement to the Senate Committee
on the Judiciary said: "In addressing
the root causes of migration we need
compassion: protecting those forced

KIDS CORNER
YEAR OF ST. JOSEPH 12/8/2020 TO 12/8/2021
Artisan Breads
Some of the most typical “artistic”
breads are:
 The Latin Cross: The ultimate
symbol of our Lord’s suffering
and salvation.
The Bambino: The baby Jesus to
whom St. Joseph was foster
father.
St. Joseph’s Staff: Legend has it
that St. Joseph’s staff blossomed
into a lily, a symbol both of life
and death.
St. Joseph’s Purse: This symbol is
a reminder to give alms to the
poor during Lent.
A Sheaf of Wheat: Wheat is a
reminder that, when a single,
tiny grain of wheat falls into the
ground and dies, it bears much
more food at harvest time—and
that the early spring harvest of
greens is almost here.
St. Joseph himself: He is always
represented in profile and
hunched over with a cane,
symbolizing that he was
(according to tradition) an old
man, while Mary was a much
younger woman.
 St. Joseph’s Beard: This is
actually just the Sheaf of Wheat
turned upside down, but young
children delight when their
fathers and grandfathers hold
their beard up to their face. It is
another reminder of Joseph’s
wisdom and old age.
Heart: A symbol of devotion to
the Sacred Heart of Jesus and
the Immaculate Heart of Mary
that flourished throughout Italy
in general and Sicily in particular
in the 19th century.
The Crown of Thorns: This is in
remembrance of Christ’s passion
and a reminder that, despite the
day’s feasting among Lent’s
fasting, Lent is still a season of
sorrow—but of hope, too!

Diocesan Prayer for Protection From Storms
and Illness
God our Father, Creator of the Universe and Lord over all
creation, we humbly stand before you as your children in
thanksgiving for your loving care and protection. We ask
that you keep us safe from all hurricanes and illness
which may threaten us in the coming seasons. Protect us from all fear and anxiety and
give us ardent trust and hope in Your love and mercy. You alone have the power to
command the sea, the wind, and the rain. You alone bring peace, calm, and safety.
Father, we thank you in advance, for you are our only Refuge. We ask this through Christ,
Your Son, Who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever. Amen.
Mary, Queen of the Apostles, and Patroness of our Diocese, pray for us.
