'Risalo' by Adnan Hussain - Family Grant - Project Description "Risalo" is a performance that combines traditional Rajasthani puppetry with sufi poetry and folk tales in a cinematic style. Original music was recorded in Sindh, Pakistan with folk and classical musicians who carry on generations old traditions which are quickly disappearing. Across the border, in India, Puran Bhatt, who comes from a long line of puppeteers, created puppets based on designs by Adnan Hussain, a Los Angeles based animation artist. Being of Pakistani descent (visa restrictions), he was not able to travel to India to work on site with Puran, but thanks to technology, they were able to make this collaboration a reality and are fundraising to bring Puran to Los Angeles to collaborate with local puppeteers. The three part performance starts with an introduction to the traditional Rajasthani variety program. It shows several key types of puppets with special skills and humor. An animated vignette shows the story of good versus evil, with a peacock and a snake. The final piece, is the story of "Sorath" told through puppetry. Bijal, a herder and musician returns home to find his village burned and Sorath, a young woman kidnapped a king. He takes his surando (a rare traditional instrument) to the king's city and sees a land of wealth, that is cold to those in need. He uses his music, to entrance the king who has all monetary things, as well as Sorath, now as his queen, but not happiness. The king, overjoyed offers the mysterious musician wealth, but Bijal refuses. He entreats upon him to ask what he will, that he may grant it. Bijal hesitates, then relents and demands the king's head. The king's pride won't let him back down as he has promised to grant the wish in front of the entire court. The musician plays until the king loses himself in dance and relinquishes his head at the end of the music. Bijal thinks that Sorath will be pleased at his revenge and run away with her. She looks at him, sadly, and weeps for the king as the guards approach. Bijal flees into the night. Later, in the desert, Bijal has renounced worldly things. He wanders aimless, until one of his goats runs into him. The goat leads him back back along his path to play music for the world and find purpose in this gift. The story is a spiritual journey, that offers playful visual storytelling for younger audience members, with added depth through the narrated poetry in music and project subtitles for adults. The story is told through Rajasthani puppetry (marionettes), storytelling cues from cinema, except for a 10 minute animation that allows for scene change. It plays out on a modified version of the traditional Rajasthani puppet stage, with hand quilted backgrounds and rich lighting. The king puppet is based on the traditional magician puppet whose head can pop off his neck, to his hand, foot or back.

Bios Adnan Hussain is an director and artist who has worked as an artist at studios such as Disney Feature Animation and Sony Pictures Imageworks. His own projects are collaborations using his film background to create new experiences with traditional folk artists and musicians from around the globe. The work supports artists and traditions on the verge of extinction. Puran Bhatt is a master puppeteer from India. Originally from Rajasthan, a group of puppeteer families settled in Delhi almost fifty years ago. They currently reside in the Kathputli Colony at Delhi. He was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2003, given by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, India's National Academy of Music, Dance and Drama. Despite all of that, he works tirelessly to advocate for his community of artists in the face of forced removal and intimidation from real estate developers without government support. Performance Venue Dmitri Carter / Northwest Puppet Theater The Carters have been professional puppeteers since 1976. They trained with master puppeteers of Romania, Sicily, and China. Stephen Carter received the Fulbright Award for puppetry studies in 1984 and holds a postgraduate degree from the Institute of Theater and Cinema in Bucharest. The Carter Family Marionettes have been featured performers at National and World Puppet Festivals from Scotland to Uzbekistan. They have presented their plays in five different languages and have also been invited as guest director/designers internationally. The company has been awarded the "UNIMA/USA Citation of Excellence" (the highest award in American puppet theater) for three of their productions. Chris and Stephen Carter were the Directors of the 1999 Puppeteers of America Festival of the Millennium held at the University of Washington August 1999. The Carters are especially known for their mastery and preservation of the traditional Sicilian marionette theater known as Opera dei Pupi. Chris and Stephen Carter founded the Northwest Puppet Center in 1986. In 1993 they purchased and renovated a charming church in the Maple Leaf neighborhood of Seattle. The center presents a family season of puppetry by the Carters and selected guest artists with over 250 performances each year. The Northwest Puppet Center provides a valuable resource and fascinating entertainment for children and families.
