Principal’s News

This week will see the commencement of our Wednesday morning sport trial to help reduce students doing sport in the middle of the heat. All students will be required to attend morning assembly to have their rolls marked. Congratulations to our Year 11 students who attended the RYDA presentation in Cowra. Feedback was extremely positive from both the students and the presenters. I would also like to congratulate our student leaders on their participation in the Leadership Day at Kelso High School. Last Thursday there was another attempted break-in into our Canteen. Fortunately the offenders were unsuccessful however Police attended and fingerprints taken. A new and stronger security door has now been installed. Please help relay the message that NO CASH IS KEPT ON THE CANTEEN PREMISES. 2020 planning is well underway across the school and as a staff the school priorities for the coming year have been set. Literacy and Numeracy will remain a key focus even with NAPLAN data showing greater than expected growth. In addition to these two areas the school will look at Assessment (particularly exam time management and experience of longer exam format), development of enhanced primary linkages, building student potential and Aboriginal education through cultural understanding. As always we welcome your input and contributions into the meeting of these targets. The HSC finishes this week and I would like to acknowledge the year 12 students on not only their positive attitude toward the exams but also the mature way they worked with the Presiding Officer and supervisors. This Friday evening the school will say a final farewell to these young adults at the Graduation Dinner in Eugowra. Congratulations to Santi Tapim on being the winner of last week’s Canteen voucher.

ROTARY YOUTH DRIVER AWARENESS (RYDA)

Last Thursday, our Year 11 students attended the Rotary Youth Driver Awareness (RYDA) program in Cowra. RYDA is an educational resource delivered through a series of practical and powerful workshops that challenge students to change the way they think about road safety. It lays the foundation for safe road use throughout their lives. Thank you to the local Rotary Clubs for organising the day to raise awareness of road and driver safety.

YEAR 11 LEADERSHIP DAY Last Tuesday 5th November, the current school leaders Julia Wright, Santiago Tapim, Ashlee Hampton, Angus Clark, Alana Smith and Marshall McKay had the opportunity to travel to Kelso High for a leadership day. John Coutis, an inspirational public speaker gave hints on leadership and how to learn new ways of becoming a better leader. This is the first time that Canowindra High school leaders have been able to go to a leadership day in Kelso. It was their first time running one and we thought it was a good idea to give it a go. John Coutis also spoke of his traumatic schooling experiences and reminded us that if you thought you were having a bad day all you had to do is remember some of his experiences. Mr Coutis’ advice on leadership is “A good leader leads by example not by command”.

The overall day was a great one for the students and gave us an insight into what life was like for John and what it is to be

a good leader. The day itself allowed for the leaders to interact with other school leaders from schools in the surrounding

area and participate in workshops on public speaking and other useful leadership skills. Marshall McKay.
