A Series of Roger Jones Musicals—First Sunday of Month—”Greater Than Gold”

Sunday 5th February 2017 at 6.00pm. We invite you to listen to the musical – and join in if you wish – which tells the story of a Welsh girl of the late eighteenth century who was determined to own a Bible in Welsh. She walked 28 miles to buy a Bible. The Bible Society was established by Revd Thomas Charles, Wil-liam Wilberforce and others in 1804, as a result of the story re–told in Greater than Gold. Bible Society exists to offer the Bible to the world, in a language people can understand and at a price they

can afford. This year is designated the Year of the Bible. In 2014, the Bible Society opened Mary Jones World, a visitor and education centre in Bala, North Wales, the town where Mary Jones purchased her Bible in 1800. Mary Jones World tells the story of Mary Jones and Thomas Charles, and the impact of world´s bestselling book – in Wales and the world.

Editorial Team of this Monthly Information Sheet. After the last edition of “Faith Matters” in May 2013 - the magazine for St. Faith’s and St. Nicholas - Colin Carter, Hilary Deadman and Geoff Porter formed a team to produce a monthly information sheet for parishioners consisting of four pages folded into a convenient A5 sheet with the following standard information: page 1—”What’s On” & “Sunday Ser-vices”; page4—”Contact Details”; pages 2 & 3—PCC meeting notes and other rele-vant information. Should you have any comments or suggestions regarding the monthly information sheet then please contact any of the editorial team, bearing in mind that it is an information sheet giving short and succinct details, and is not a magazine which would contain interesting but longer stories with local advertisers.

Bellringers’ Dinner. On 26 November St Faith's Bellringers’ welcomed 73 family and friends to what has become their annual Christmas dinner, at St Faith's Church Hall. We were welcomed by Bill Skilleter with a glass of sherry and Festive music before sitting down to a sumptuous 4 course Christmas dinner with all the trimmings, including wine and crackers. A light hearted quiz was continued throughout the meal - who will ever forget that the collective

noun for kittens is a kindle! Father Tom welcomed the guests and led us in prayer, Jan Stuart responded on behalf of the Bellringers and thanked Bill for all his hard work in organising the dinner as well as the ringers as their Captain. Bill gave a brief resumé of the Bellringers’ year. An excellent evening was had by all and we eagerly anticipate this year’s 30th anniversary dinner on 25 November when all are wel-come.

Shrove Tuesday (known in some countries as Pancake Tuesday or Pancake Day) is 28th February this year, the day preceding Ash Wednesday (the first day of Lent), which is celebrated in some countries by con-suming pancakes. In others, especially those where it is called Mardi Gras or some translation thereof, this is a carnival day, and also the last day of "fat eating" or "gorging" before the fasting period of Lent.

This moveable feast is determined by Easter. The expression "Shrove Tuesday" comes from the word shrive, meaning "absolve". Shrove Tuesday is observed by many Christians, including Anglicans, Lutherans, Methodists and Roman Catho-lics, who "make a special point of self-examination, of considering what wrongs they need to repent, and what amendments of life or areas of spiritual growth they especially need to ask God's help." Being the last day of the liturgical season historically known as Shrovetide, before the penitential season of Lent, related popular practices, such as indulging in food that one sacrifices for the upcoming forty days, are associated with Shrove Tuesday celebrations, before commencing the fasting and religious obligations associated with Lent. The term Mardi Gras is French for "Fat Tuesday", referring to the practice of the last night of eating richer, fatty foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season.

Parish Magazines. In 1917 the ‘Parish Church Magazine Havant’ could be pur-chased for one penny from Mr Davies, Chemist, West Street and from ‘District Visitors’. St Faith’s Parish Maga-zines dating back to 1917, have been deposited in the Mu-seum at The Spring. In 1917 the parish was in an interreg-num but services were held on Sunday with a Holy Com-munion service at 8am and Matins and sermon at 11am. There was a children’s service at 3pm and Evensong and Sermon at 6pm. Evensong was said daily at 5.30pm (except Wednesday) but there was a Communion service at 8am on that day. Matins and Intercession was said daily at noon with Litany said on Wednesdays and Fridays.

Evensong with Sermon was said at Langstone on Fridays at 6.30pm and a Mission Service was held at Brockhampton on Sundays at 7.30pm. This must all have been very hard work for the Curate the Reverend A.F. Hill. The contents of the maga-zines are fascinating and give a very good picture of the social history of Havant. There are a large number of magazines in the collection but none from April 1924 until December 1930; no copies for 1932 to 1935; none for the years of the Second World War and those for the 1960s onward are incomplete. Has anyone got copies hidden away? Any additions would be very much appreciated and could be taken to Clare in the Parish Office. They then could be added to the collection.
