Dear FriendsThe India enterprise software market showed broad growth

and recovery in 2010 with total software revenue increasing 16.3 percent annually to total $2.5 billion. In 2009, India revenue grew just 4.2 percent to $2.1 billion.

In 2010, major software vendors expanded their product portfolios, acquired companies where appropriate to their plans, and reached deeper into emerging markets including India. The year represented a return to solid footing as the India market expanded in terms of revenue and maturity.

Four of the top five vendors experienced revenue gains above the industry average. Microsoft maintained the No. 1 position as it increased its enterprise software revenue market share in India to 28 percent in 2010. Microsoft’s results were enhanced in 2010 by the broader adoption of new releases of the Windows 7 operating system and Microsoft Office 2010 productivity software. Microsoft’s total software revenue results were improved by new strategies aimed not only at individuals, but also at organizations and multiple delivery models.

IBM maintained its No. 2 ranking in 2010 as it had in 2009. It would be the No. 1 enterprise software vendor if Gartner did not count consumer sales of Microsoft’s office and operating systems. IBM sells only to enterprises and partners. The company’s software revenue grew more than 15.3 percent in 2010, mainly due to its WebSphere, Tivoli, Information Mgmt., Operating Systems and Rational brands. IBM expanded dramatically in 2010 into the applications segment with a focus on e-commerce, marketing and sales with more than 20 industry solution frameworks as its “smarter planet” go-to-market strategy evolves.

Oracle showed the strongest growth among the top five vendors, as it increased its revenue 25.2 percent. Its growth was achieved across all software markets, with faster growth emerging from its business intelligence, security, IT operations, and data integration and quality tools offerings. Oracle has kept most acquired technologies intact while integrating the infrastructure and middleware into Oracle Fusion Middleware (OFM) 11g with some integration across the application portfolio. Oracle expects continued market momentum in its industry offerings, middleware, data quality and integration tools, master data management, database customer relationship management (CRM) and supply chain management (SCM) solutions.

Among the top 25 vendors in India, VMware led the group with more than 51 percent growth in 2010, followed by Cisco with more than 31 percent. The top 25 vendors accounted for nearly 94 percent share, or more than $2.3 billion, of the overall software market.

How Brocade products and solutions Helps to Eliminate Network Complex-ity in Virtualized IT Environments?

Brocade has four pillars of focus:1. Unmatched Simplicity2. Non-Stop Networking 3. Optimized Applications &4. Investment ProtectionBrocadeOne accomplishes itself on

all the four pillars, it has a spectrum of networks with end to end solutions – solutions that are virtualized and cloud optimized with the products. Thus making it appear as

w Unmatched simplicity – unified management domain

w Non-Stop Network – resiliency without redundancy

w Application Optimization – Low Latency deterministic

w Investment Protection – open extensible IT sourcing

Brocade VDX 6720, delivering Virtual Cluster Switching (VCS) technology, were launched in November 2010. VCS removes the need for separate aggregation switches because the fabric is “self-aggregating.” This enables flatter network architecture, dramatically reducing cost and management complexity. Thus, network architects will be able to move to core/edge architectures, simplifying their designs while reducing capital and operating expenses.

This changes the way the data center networks are built to support cloud computing initiatives. It simplifies network architectures and dramatically reduces operating expenses. It also allows the virtual data center to scale while reducing complexity and enabling seamless

application mobility. Hence, Brocade solutions increase network performance, utilization, and resiliency by building data center Ethernet fabrics. Can you put some light on Brocade’s converged data center architecture?

The Brocade Data Center Fabric (DCF) architecture provides a strategic foundation for implementing holistic data center virtualization solutions. It provides the “enabling” layer for server and storage virtualization with the built-in intelligence required for high-performance virtual environments – along with unique Adaptive Networking services and multiprotocol capabilities.

The Brocade VDX 6720 data center switches have been designed from the ground-up to improve network utilization, maximize application availability, increase scalability, and dramatically simplify the network architecture in next-generation virtual data centers. Delivering Virtual Cluster Switching (VCS) technology, the VDX 6720 builds data center fabrics, revolutionizing the way Layer 2 networks are architected, enabling cloud initiatives.

Whether enhancing classic hierarchical network architectures, desiring flatter, scale-out fabrics for a virtual data center, or planning to adopt network convergence, the VDX 6720 delivers innovative technology to enhance and simplify the network. What is your go-to–market strategy in India? Which vertical will you be focus-ing on primarily?

Brocade follows a 100 percent indirect model through channels; therefore partners are on top of the agenda. Brocade’s overall Alliance Partner Network with strong focus on profitability and return on partnership

has been well received by partners in India. They believe we have good strategy in place for networking landscape.

Our go-to-market strategy in India would include,w Our Partnersw Partnerships with GSIs.In addition, Brocade has its own

strategic Account Management team focusing on the top 100 strategic accounts in the country.

Brocade focused approach is on the 5 verticals for the Enterprise/IP business- Service providers; government, financial segment, healthcare and education. In the SAN segment Brocade already enjoys a strong presence across all verticals and Brocade is increasing its footprint.

Brocade is also expanding its channel partner presence in India and is enhancing focus on the tier 2 cities. What is the present focus for Brocade in India? How important is the channel community for Brocade?

The focus is to help our customers build networks that are simple, flexible, scalable and deliver high performance with technologies that conform to open standards. Some of the key focus technology areas are Virtual datacenters, IPV 6 migration, application delivery platforms and converged networks.

CHANNEL buzzinvestment in Asiapac. This investment will be utilized for training, customer education as well as test-drive Ethernet fabric with VDX/VCS technology – a program whereby Brocade will provide equipment for end-customers to experience Brocade technology, before deciding to invest.

Brocade recently hosted the first Asia Channel Advisory Board with participation of 40 C level senior partner executives for APAC. Brocade’s top five partners from India also participated.Do you have any plan to strengthen your channel community?

Expanding channel is an ongoing process at Brocade. So yes, Brocade is in the process of adding more channel partners in India across the country - North, South, East and West. We intend to strengthen our geographical span as well as the market span in the 5 verticals which are Service providers, Government (including Defense), Education, Financial Services, and Healthcare.

Brocade is constantly upgrading value for its partners as we believe that by strengthening and working for the success of our partners, we serve Brocade.

To empower our channel partners, we have comprehensive trainings and certification programs. And provide them access to tools and a knowledge portal to enable them deliver value to customers. What are some of the trends that the industry is going to see in the year 2011?

Enterprises are taking advantage of the convergence revolution by adopting new operating models and creating virtual enterprises. In doing so, they become much more agile and flexible, more efficient and less capital intensive and becoming more competitive, but only if the architecture is affordable and reliable. We expect this trend to continue into 2011 and are rosy about the outlook and opportunities ahead.

The effect of mobility will be more greatly felt in 2011 across all aspects of IT from the enterprise LAN to the data center and the SP core, spurring a bigger uptake in virtualization of storage and applications and cloud computing from the consumer level to the corporate level. This trend will further develop into 2011 with the increasingly mobile workforce leveraging a fuller capacity of the cloud.

The move toward cloud computing models will be a key challenge for CIOs in 2011 as they deal with complexities that virtualization creates in the rest of the data center – networks and storage. What are your future plans and pro-

grams in India? In March 2011, Brocade made the

announcement of USD 100 million investments in the APAC region where Brocade has driven 4 major programs

1: TRY BROCADE – the enterprises can have a Test drive of Ethernet fabrics with VDX/VCS technology, if they like it they can ship it or else Brocade take the equipment back. With this initiative Brocade is also monitoring the network and ensures that once the provided time period is over, Brocade approaches them with the proof points of the difference and benefits Brocade brings to their functionality.

200 CIO’s approached Brocade, out of which Brocade is in talks with 70 of them on the future stage, yet there are substantial amount is from India.

2: DATA CENTRE MASTER PLAN – where Brocade jointly determines the target environment and business needs and develops optimized solutions to address the business needs of our customers.

3: TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER – Brocade understands that the right approach towards the system helps the business and so Brocade ensures that while

the architecture grows and the network is building, the team is ready and hence Brocade drives this program. 8000+Brocade certified engineers in APAC. Upgrading skills to Brocade Certified Ethernet Fabrics Engineer (BCEFE)

4: The Silicon Valley Cloud Study tour which will start from September 2011 onwards where we will invite customers to discuss and share issues and suggest a frame work for a cloud journey.

Brocade during the recently concluded Tech Day in May 2011 in San Jose, made some exciting announcements introducing the world’s first 16Gbps Fabric portfolio, and stepped ahead with its BrocadeOne strategy which helps customers reduce network complexity and support new and distributed applications. It explained Brocade CloudPlex meets the goal of the Brocade One strategy, designed to help companies transition smoothly to a world where information and applications can reside anywhere by delivering solutions that deliver unmatched simplicity, non-stop performance, application optimization and investment protection. l

• NeApp has invested in key channel partners through the ‘Incentive Head Count’ program where NetApp funds the costs of key employees who act as NetApp Champions within the partner organizations. What are some of the trends that the industry is going to see in the year 2011?

Most, if not all, companies will have adopted a ‘Virtualize First’ policy for new applications

• More customers are rethinking their IT infrastructures and evaluating alternatives to cope with the new realities of today’s business growth and pace. There is a sense of urgency to act now and move from a siloed infrastructure to a shared IT infrastructure that is more efficient and flexible in addressing today’s rapidly evolving business requirements.

• Most companies will have migrated or be in the process of migrating the bulk of their existing application to virtual machines, but this transition will stretch beyond 2011.

• There will be even more talk about cloud IT services, but buyers are still cautious. There will also be a lot of talk about hybrid cloud. The cloud hype will continue to get louder until a deployment cycle starts in earnest.

• A battle for new apps infrastructure will emerge with traditional ITaaS vendors on one side and Microsoft Azure, Amazon, and Google on the other side. This is already happening to a degree, but will heat up in 2011.

• There will be more use of flash memory to accelerate enterprise applications. There will be various models of deployment for the technology – arrays or host-side, cache or primary – as customers and vendors look for more ways to use it.

• Object storage will be a hot discussion in 2011 with expanding enterprise deployments starting by 2012.What are your future plans and programs in India?

Given our vision for the Flexible, Efficient, and Ready for the Future IT, partners become critical to its success because they complete the complete stack to build a Flexible and Efficient Infrastructure. Our future plans and programs in India will focus around addressing the following challenges faced by the partner community

A. Cloud offers a great business opportunity for Service providers and channel partners. Our recently launched new portfolio delivers foundation for shared IT Infrastructure and accelerates the implementation of both private and public cloud.

B. Furthermore, our delivery partners, such as GSIs, and all our channel partners, will now have another reason to have a conversation with business leaders about how we can together accelerate the pace of their business with flexible IT. The goal is to use flexible IT to elevate NetApp to be included in our partners’ conversations about using IT to move a business forward. Ultimately, this will lead to more sales for NetApp and our partners since flexible IT is based on products and solutions that are part of the shared storage infrastructure.

C. Increasingly customers are looking at Service Providers to offer them Infrastructure as a service as an option. We have a world class program to help partners build a build a business model and go to market jointly with NetApp.

D. Today a key concern that customers have is around security and one of the biggest challenges the partners face is to convince and ensure them of the security of their data.

E. NetApp’s products and technologies are already power-packed to overcome these challenges by incorporating rigorous security controls and protocols to realize its vision of shared architecture. l

Kaspersky Lab Presents Kaspersky Small Office Se-curity 2

Kaspersky Lab announces the release of the second version of Kaspersky Small Office Security, a solution specially designed for the protection of small businesses. The updated solution is simple to configure and provides optimal security for small business computer infrastructure and data, with minimal impact on system resources.

Kaspersky Small Office Security 2 incorporates award-winning antivirus technologies from Kaspersky Lab. The antivirus scanner, heuristic analyzer, application control system and isolated ‘sandbox’ environment for launching suspicious files enable the detection and blocking of both known and new malicious programs before they can inflict any damage. The solution protects servers and workstations running on Windows OS, which is the operating system of choice for many small businesses.

The new version of the product is a comprehensive solution that provides wide-ranging protection against external threats. Kaspersky Small Office Security 2 now has a host of new features, such as backup capabilities, a data encryption system, a password management module and an administration center designed to improve the level of security and system management.

Business Strategy

A few years into digital printing’s fourth decade, we can now see a point on the horizon where the digital business will catch up with offset. Based upon intelligence from numerous leading industry observers, studies project that digital and offset will each make up 34 percent of all print revenue by 2018.

Several key applications drive much of that volume, including books, collateral, direct marketing, photo merchandise and transactional printing of documents such as bills and statements. Most of the growth is in digital color printing, which is expected to more than double between 2008 and 2013 to worldwide revenue of more than $120 billion, and according to market-research and consulting firm, Pira International, that will reach $134 billion by 2014. Of this, marketing collateral is what drives most of digital color volume.Collateral Dominance

Organizational literature for promoting products and services such as brochures, sell sheets, posters, catalogs and calendars have long been a staple print application for graphic communications companies of all sizes. As high-quality digital color presses came online in the last decade, collateral volume has shifted from offset to digital. The reason for the shift?

Digital printing delivers many compelling benefits that make it impossible to ignore. These include convenient 24/7 ordering and fulfillment via Web storefronts, streamlined version control for more up-to-date content, increased automation in production and order tracking for greater efficiency and faster turnarounds, and less warehousing and waste, improving inventory control while reducing cost and environmental impact.

Much digital collateral production today begins with an online repository of digital assets. Customers order jobs on Web storefronts that are tightly integrated with highly automated, near touch-less digital production systems. This helps keep production costs low, while automated color management and tracking systems ensure top quality. It’s a classic just-in-time, print-on demand model, with orders placed in the quantities needed.

Many additional digital capabilities can enhance these systems. Distributing orders electronically for printing nearest the point of need can reduce transportation costs and environmental impact while accelerating delivery. Customization can enable networks of dealers, agents and retail locations to localize collateral, while maintaining the central organization’s branding consistency. Personalization can enable sales people to personalize collateral for each recipient, for example, to include only the information that is relevant to the prospect’s interests.

These systems are transforming the way collateral is produced and distributed, while boosting sales by ensuring that brochures and product literature with the right content are in the right hands at the right time.Web-Based Design and Delivery

Digital printing is gaining momentum across business verticals. For example, businesses like Real Estate firms need to focus on selling

properties — not on learning creative design programs, designing open house brochures or supervising their production. Digital printing solutions can help Real Estate firms refresh their brand and collateral creation process by adding new brochures and business cards to their site which can help them get additional business by marketing the solution to other prospects.

The 2010 FIFA World Cup of soccer was the focus of much attention around the world last year, and Dutch graphic communications company De Budelse found a way to make it the focus of its clients’ businesses, as well. The firm created and marketed a colorful, calendar-style bracket tracker that was customizable, permitting De Budelse customers to include their name and logo as a promotional giveaway to their clients.

Also included were die-cuts of the colorful jerseys of each World Cup national team that could be popped out inserted into slots on the calendar indicating the winners of each match as teams advanced.

While the Dutch lost to Spain1-0 in the final, De Budelse was a clear winner. Five orders were placed immediately after the first sample piece was mailed to prospects, and overall De Budelse expects sales of 30,000 pieces. In addition, the workflow De Budelse created can be applied to similar business-to-business applications in the future.

Many of these cutting-edge, digitally printed collateral pieces look much like brochures printed on offset. Indeed that’s part of their appeal. Equally important are the automated processes that accelerate production while reducing cost, the pinpoint control of inventory, and the customization and personalization that can add significant relevancy and business value. This powerful toolset will continue to drive the growth that soon will put digital printing on par with offset. l

Cloud Strategy

How big is the Cloud computing market in India? And how Cisco is positioned in this market? What is Cisco’s strategy and vision for cloud?

In a recent report, IDC predicts a huge growth for the cloud market, with “six times the rate of IT spending between now and 2013 for cloud services. In 2009, approximately $17 billion was spent on cloud-related technologies, hardware and software. By 2013, that spending is expected to grow to $45 billion.” IDC says that in 2 to 5 years, 40 percent of service provider customers will buy cloud services and cloud-related spending could account for 25 percent of IT spending growth.

Cisco envisions the next era of IT ecosystem where the networked Cloud transforms the way we live, work, play and learn.

Our approach to Cloud is to maximize customer choice and

industry innovation. In concert with our partners, we provide platforms, solutions and services that lever¬age the network platform to: speed time to capability and business impact; achieve transformational agility and efficiency; unlock more effective collaboration with employees, customers and partners; and enable others to build advanced function-ality and offer innovative services.

Cisco’s Unified Computing System (UCS) is a key component in our cloud strategy, it is a next-generation data center platform that unites compute, network, storage access, and virtualization into a cohesive system that reduces TCO, increases business agility and improves energy efficiency. Cisco entered the UCS market two years back and within this short span of time Cisco has quickly achieved top tier ranking as a computing systems vendor with #3 player worldwide in x86 blade server market as per a recent IDC Worldwide Quarterly Server Tracker, May 2011.

Four core beliefs about the future of Cloud underpin our vision:

1. Adoption will be motivated initially by cost and agility

2. The network platform is required to deliver on the full promise of Cloud

3. Multiple approaches are required to accommodate diverse customer objectives

4. Innovation will flourish across the IT industryWhat are emerging trend in Cloud computing market?

The IT world is abuzz with talk about cloud computing and virtualization. Companies are turning to both technologies to help cut expenditures and extend their computing resources.

With the development of anything as a service, and rise of cloud computing, service providers are changing how they deliver services. The service delivery model is evolving from the original customer premises equipment (CPE) model, such as managed router

Business Strategyor WAN optimization services, toward hosted communications services and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) and Software as a Service (SaaS). This trend toward cloud-based services requires a network infrastructure that supports customer migration to the cloud. Customers are at different stages of adoption of these services, and migration may span stages. Customers still have their own data centers and host their own services, but they are also considering moving applications to the service provider data center and taking advantage of the cost benefits of using IaaS and SaaS.Which are the verticals Cisco is primarily focusing at?

We are looking at all the key industry verticals like IT and ITES, Telecom, BFSI, Government, Healthcare, and Education. What will be the future of cloud computing in India? What kind of opportunities Cisco sees in emerging markets like India?

We definitely expect increased deployment of cloud in India in the years to come. With advancements in technology and proliferation of high end mobile devices, we are bound to see an uptake in cloud based services. Many companies in India are rapidly evolving towards cloud computing, to address different business needs and increase productivity and cost efficiency. With cloud computing services to their customers, solution providers can help them increase cost efficiency and productivity.

For eg: Cisco Unified Service Delivery uses the power of the network to unify separate datacenters to act as one, resulting in more efficient, more capable service delivery engine. Data-center services will move from being delivered “over the top” of the SP networks to “with” the network, resulting in a better and secure user experience.

With cloud computing, organizations will be able to do things previously not possible with their information systems and applications. Moreover, the organizations will be able to deploy their computing assets in new ways that will save them time, energy and money.

Cloud will also enable entirely new business models and revenue streams. Service providers will be drawn to the potential of revenue

growth and differentiation. Beyond basic offerings such as infrastructure as a service, Cloud provides several opportunities for higher-margin services such as collaboration as a service, enterprise-class service offers with tiered service level agreements, and industry-specific services. Beyond better-faster-cheaper, Cloud will enable entirely new business models and revenue streams. Cloud Strategyconcerns) and ecosystem development

Some of Cisco’s initiatives in the cloud computing space in India are mentioned below:

Cisco has formed a Virtual Computing Environment (VCE) coalition, with EMC with VMware. VCE offers comprehensive professional and technical support services to provide a smooth end-to-end customer and partner experience. VCE professional services, jointly developed and delivered, will help customers understand how to maximize value and speed time to virtualization and private cloud solutions. These offers include executive and architecture advisory services, strategy services, and design and implementation services.

Cisco has also partnered with NetApp recently to form FlexPod: which is a collaboration of NetApp, VMWare, and Cisco to architect design a platform as a service to the Private/Public Cloud Computing. NetApp, Cisco, and VMware collaborated to create, a flexible infrastructure package comprising presized storage, networking, and server components.

To provide Indian customers with an opportunity to experience firsthand, the benefits and reliability of cloud infrastructure; Cisco and EMC have partnered to launch Cloud Experience Centres (CEC) in Bangalore. As a first-of-its-kind collaboration, the twin facilities have been created at the EMC Center of Excellence and at the Cisco Globalization Center East as part of the 25,000 square feet lab.

Cisco also partnered with Bharti Airtel, and Servion to form a consortium and announced their foray into the Indian hosted Contact Center services market. This is the launch of India’s first customizable hosted Contact Center services. This hosted Contact Center solution for large, medium, and small enterprises offers freedom from technology obsolescence, capital investments, and continuity challenges while leveraging the capability to customize the solution based on business requirements. How Cisco maintain synergy with partners for Cloud business in In-dia? And how you are empower-ing your channel partners to face the challenges around cloud com-puting?

As collaboration, virtualization, video and cloud-based services

transform the information technology industry. Partners are likely to drive more profitability with increased adoption of cloud computing. Cisco is helping its channel partners accelerate their growth and evolve. During its global partner conference, Cisco introduced a new cloud partner program to help partners choose their role in the cloud and evolve their business models to capitalize on the multi-billion cloud market opportunity. To help partners enhance their professional services capabilities and accelerate their evolution to selling end-to-end communications and IT solutions or ‘architectures,’ Cisco also unveiled its latest smart services innovation, Cisco Collaborative Professional Services - a portfolio of services that combines Cisco intellectual capital, engineering expertise and service automation to help partners profitably expand or build new professional services practices.

The Cisco Cloud Partner Program (CPP) has three tracks that provide partners with the flexibility to choose the role they want to play in the market: Cloud Builder, Cloud Provider and Cloud Services Reseller.

o Cloud Builder is for partners who design and implement cloud-ready infrastructures or fully provisioned private or public clouds. The designation validates partners’ competency in three aspects of building clouds: Infrastructure, Management Applications and Cloud Professional Services.

o Cloud Provider is designed for partners offering public cloud services to the market. The Cloud Provider track empowers and supports our cloud service provider partners to sell their own brand of Cisco-powered cloud services.

o Cloud Services Reseller is complementary to the Cloud Provider track as it offers an additional route to market for the cloud provider. Cloud Services Resellers are partners who “white-label” or resell a Cloud Provider’s “Cisco Powered Service.”

The Cloud Builder and Cloud Provider tracks include branding, as well as reference architecture support, financing, market development funding and access to channel partners as a route to market. These benefits are in addition to those the partners already receive from Cisco.

To reduce incremental costs to partners, CPP builds upon partners’ existing certifications in Cisco and its ecosystem partners.

What are Cisco’s advantages over other competitor in Cloud comput-ing space?

Cisco’s focus is on market transitions, market expansion, world-class partnerships and innovation.

UCS is our offering in the Virtualisation space – which is considered to be the first step towards cloud computing. Cisco UCS is the first integrated system to bring together physical and virtual compute resources and networking technology to create a unified computing fabric. Imagine you bought the latest Electronic device and it got damaged just by the touch of your finger to its USB port or your laptop getting damaged by electrical surge in LAN cable. The discharge of

electrical charges from the human body or a lightning surge in a power cable can create enough current and voltage to damage the silicon of any electronic chip. As the devices are getting faster and smaller they become more and more susceptibility to electrical surges. This unpleasant situation can be avoided if circuits are properly protected against these surges by using specific silicon devices called protection ICs, which can absorb these surges and not let them reach the functional ICs. This article emphasizes the need to protect ICs in electronic devices for better reliability, user loyalty, and operating cost reduction due to the cost of repairs.

Key Applications Needing Protection ICs

Mobile Phones – Audio lines, USB interfaces, bottom connectors and keypads, touch screens, Video Serial Interface, HDMI, MIPI (Mobile Industry Processor Interface), memory cards, SIM cards, battery and charger ports.

Consumer goods – USB2.0, USB3.0, HDMI1.3, HDMI1.4, Display port, LNB for STB

Networking and Telecom Infrastructure – SLIC (line cards, voice band), Digital lines (xDSL, ADSH2+, CDSL, VDSL2 modems, Ethernet), SLVU on RJ45 side, power over Ethernet

Industrial applications – MOSFET protection in Inverter/UPS or other applications that use MOSFETs along with transformers.

Types of Protectiona) Electro Static Discharge [ESD] ProtectionThe human body can pick up an electrical charge from the

environment or from interaction with another charged object. You may have experienced this - when you rub a comb with cloth and bring it close to your hair, the hair tends to rise. This is because the charges on our hair attract the opposite charges of the comb. Sometime we can even experience an electrical shock by touching a non-electrical device. Any of these sudden discharges of current can generate enough of an ESD pulse to damage the silicon chip of our electronic devices.

The various standards relating to IC ESD are listed below.• MIL STD 883E-Method 3015-7 (human body model,

Page 27: Consumer Infoline Magazine

June 2011 | Consumer Infoline | 27

CoMPutING strategyHBM): This simulates an ESD event

when a person is charged either to a positive or negative

potential and touches an IC at another potential.• JESD22-A115-A (machine model, MM): This simulates

an ESD event that occurs when part of the equipment or tool comes into contact with a device at a different potential.

• ESD STM5.1- 2007 (charged device model, CDM): This simulates an ESD event when a device discharges from a certain potential to equipment at another potential.

Most of the silicon chips today have one of the above built-in ESD protection standards to prevent the chip getting damaged in the production line. But this protection is not enough to protect the IC when the device is actually used by

the end user. When we touch a port of a device, the induction

of the PCB trace can amplify the surge discharge. So the surge which reaches the IC is much higher. The ESD standard needed to protect the device at the consumer’s end should be more stringent than HBM.

IEC 61000-4-2 (electromagnetic compatibility) simulates the whole environment where equipment may be subjected to ESD. This standard is considered as a reference in the wireless environment because this simulates more of a real-case stress. IEC61000-4-2 ensures protection at the system level whereas HBM defines protection at IC level. The difference between these standards is explained in Fig 1.a and Fig 1.b.

It is difficult to ensure IEC61000-4-2 protection embedded in the functional IC. So specialized protection ICs should be used to comply with this standard. In fact as the ICs become more complex, faster, and smaller, the gate oxide thickness is also being reduced. Hence, implementing protection is becoming increasingly difficult as protection is occupying a major portion of the silicon landscape (see fig 2). Moreover, better control of ESD risks in the factories (ionizers, grounded straps, grounded boots on conductive floors) ensures that the ICs don’t get damaged due to ESD failure. The Industry Council on ESD target levels propose a reduction for HBM (Human Body Model) levels from 2 kV to 1 kV. But the user environment remains the same, so the need for external ESD protection is even more necessary.

b) Electrical Over Stress [EOS] ProtectionTelecommunication lines are exposed to lightning in

three main ways:

Page 28: Consumer Infoline Magazine

28 | Consumer Infoline | June 2011

CoMPutING strategy• Direct lightning strike on the equipment. This is not

common as there is usually a lightning conductor. However, in this case, the surge current can reach hundreds of

thousands of amperes, so it is clear that the equipment will be destroyed.

• Lightning induces radiation in the air and causes surges through coupling with the line.

• Lightning induces a potential change in the ground which disturbs the equipment.

Lightning can damage central office equipment, gateways, phones, and other electronic devices. In addition to these surges, a telecommunication line may also be disrupted by the power line. Two scenarios are possible:• Power induction, where a current is induced in the

telecommunication line. This is generally a low current surge.

• Power contact, involving a direct contact between the telecommunication line and the power line. This is generally quite a high current over several minutes.Depending on the country, these surges have been

modeled in standards:• Telcordia GR-1089 core and TIA-968-A (formerly FCC

part 68) for America• ITU-T K series for the rest of the world• China is using YDT series, but this is based on ITU-T K

standards

4. Basics of Protection ICsProtection basically uses the diode technology for its

functioning. Figure 3 depicts the functioning of a diode. A rectifier uses the 1st quadrant and ensures that no negative pulse passes through it. A protection IC works in 3rd quadrant and does not allow voltage beyond a specified value to pass through it. A rectifier is put in series with the circuit whereas the protection is put in parallel to the circuit.

Protection ICs are classified in broadly two categories – transils and trisils. The two categories are explained below.

a) Transils - A Transil diode is a solid state, monolithic PN junction device. Transils are used in sensitive semiconductors for parallel protection against EOS or ESD. A Transil clamps

any over-voltage above its Breakdown Voltage (VBR). Transils can be unidirectional or bidirectional. The Key parameter and

Parameters• Standoff Voltage (VRM) – Safe working voltage of the

signal• Breakdown Voltage (VBR) - voltage above which current in

the Transil increases - In practice the maximum voltage of the signal is between

VRM and VBR.- VBR must be higher than the maximum operating voltage in

the application.• Peak Pulse Power (PPP) - maximum power capability of the

devices• Peak Pulse current(Ipp) - maximum current that the Transil

can withstand. • Clamping Voltage (VCL) - voltage at which the Transil clamps

the current flowing beyond the Ipp Max - Clamping factor = Vcl/Vbr- Low clamping factor indicates better protection

Trisil VI Parameters:• Standoff Voltage (VRM) – Safe working voltage of the

signal• Breakdown Voltage (VBR) - voltage above which current in

the Transil increases - In practice the maximum voltage of the signal is between

VRM and VBR.- VBR must be higher than the maximum operating voltage in

the application.• Breakover Voltage (VBO) - When the voltage reaches the

VBO the Trisil turns-on and all the surge current flows through the structure.

• Breakover Current (IBO) - Current corresponding to VBO• Holding Current (IH) - This current dies out when the transient

pulse current is lower than its holding current (IH).• Peak Pulse Current (IPP) - surge current capability defined

according to telecommunication standards (GR-1089, ITU-T K20/21)

Figure 3. Diode curve and use of protection in a typical circuit

Page 29: Consumer Infoline Magazine

June 2011 | Consumer Infoline | 29

CoMPutING strategyworking of a Transil IC is shown below.

b) Trisils – As depicted in fig 3, in Transils the Ipp is proportional to Vpp. In telecommunication systems, surges are high in terms of energy, so a Transil will blow up. For this reason, Trisils based on Thyristor/Triac technology have been developed: The electrical characteristics of a Trisil are similar to those of a Triac, except that the Trisil has only two terminals.

5. Why Silicon-based Protection ICs?

The two main alternatives of silicon-based protection ICs

are a) gas tubes and b) Metal Oxide Varistors (MOV). Gas tubes and MOVs have their advantages in certain applications which require higher surge capabilities. But there are distinct capabilities of silicon devices which make them unique with regards to non–silicon-based solutions.

Performance Degradation in Gas Tubes and MOVsThe performance of gas tubes and MOVs degrades with

every surge, whereas silicon ICs do not degrade with surges. The breakdown voltage of MOVs and gas tubes is unstable and also increases with every pulse, whereas the breakdown voltage follows a predefined path in silicon ICs with little deviation from stated value.

Silicon devices also have fast response time, Vbo independent of dv/dt, high reliability with no ageing, and smaller footprints. These advantages make silicon protection ICs the favorite for applications where surge capabilities are not very high.

6. Key ParametersProtection ICs of several makes are available in the

market. At first glance, they look similar - with compatible pin configuration and functionality - but it is important to closely observe their parameters. An incorrectly selected device can interfere not only in the normal functionality of the system but may also be worthless in providing adequate protection.

Here are some of the critical parameters:

a) Signal IntegrityTransparency of protection device is an important criterion.

Protection ICs should not interfere with the normal functioning of system. Critical parameters which impact transparency are low leakage current, low capacitance, and high bandwidth.

STMicroelectronics’ high speed interfaces come with ULC Technology. This technology provides the widest bandwidth, even for 15 KV contact ESDs. As is evident in the below description, the ULC technology devices do not attenuate the signals even at gigahertz frequencies. As a result, they provide an excellent diagram even at 3.2 GHz. Also, low capacitance means that the original signal is not impacted. The capacitance of the device is so low that it does not impact the original signal or the differential impedance of the system.

b) RobustnessSince a protection IC is the insurance of an electrical

circuit, it should protect the circuit even in adverse conditions. The device should have high surge capabilities and should not degrade with changes in temperature.

The below graphs depict the surge capabilities of equivalent devices. Both devices are similar but their degradation with regards to temperature follow different paths. ST’s SMCJ protection series offers full surge capabilities even at 110oC, whereas similar ICs from other makers degrade from 100% at 25oC to 0% at 150oC.

c) Package flexibilityPackage flexibility is another important feature of

protection devices. The new protection ICs come with pass-through rails which means the rails don’t have to be cut to embed protection ICs in the design. This flexibility allows the development and validation of the functionality of the system without the protection IC on board. The protection can then be added during the surge tests and production stage. The pass-through rail feature also saves PCB space and provides the option of adding protection to already developed products.

7. Cost of Non-ProtectionInvestment in protection ICs is not a waste of money. In

fact, it can prove to be a money-saver. This can be understood through a typical industry scenario.

Suppose a firm is producing 1 Million boards per month, and it gets 1% as field returns. Out of the total returns, 45% have been detected to be caused by ESD damage that could have been protected. So, 4.5 K boards have to be repaired. If the cost of field service - from shipping damaged boards from retail to service centre, and then providing a repaired box from service centre to the customer - comes out to be $100, the total cost incurred by the company is $450K.

This scenario could have been avoided by using protection ICs – typically 3 ICs per board at $ 0.1 each. Thus, the cost of protection ICs for 1 Million boards comes out to be $300K.

Typically, protection ICs not only save money for the manufacturer but also help to avoid the high risk of brand image destruction.

8. ConclusionProtection ICs have made it possible to make electronics

devices rugged. These ICs can protect costly electronic devices from damage because of ESD or EOS. At the same time, continuous innovation has made it possible to make them transparent to the normal function of devices. Investment in protection ICs may add to BOM cost at the beginning, but the advantages - avoiding returns and saving brand image - will have dramatic effect. While selecting a protection IC, it is important to look closely at various parameters from different vendors as seemingly similar looking devices may offer varied degrees of protection. l

Regardless of where the most relevant information resides, it will assist anyone within an organization to analyze it and collaborate to make informed decisions based on facts rather than gut reactions – all without needing to rely on IT.

With SAP Crystal Server 2011, sales and marketing departments challenged with correlating the success of their campaigns with overall revenue will be able to use the included SAP BusinessObjects Explorer software to navigate and drill down to granular levels and monitor how those campaigns are affecting return on investment (ROI) in real time.
