G20 Foreign Ministers Meet in Mexico

The foreign ministers of the G20 met in Los

Cabos, Baja California Sur, on February 19-

20, as part of scheduled

activities arranged by

Mexico, which holds the

G20 presidency this

year.

In his message to the

participants, President

Felipe Calderón noted

that Mexico is the first

Latin American country

to chair the G20, and the second developing

country after the Republic of Korea to do so.

He noted that Mexico possesses a solid and

stable macroeconomic framework.

The ministers of foreign affairs of the G20

agreed upon the follow-

ing recommendations,

among others:

• It is important to con-

tinue working for the

reform of multilateral

institutions within the

existing framework,

using a pragmatic ap-

proach.

• It is vitally important

to make use of existing

international instruments and mechanisms

rather than attempting to establish new ones.

• It is crucial to conduct rigorous and constant

monitoring of the commitments made by

heads of state and government leaders, both

within the scope of the G20 and in other rele-

vant forums, given that the degree of compli-

ance has not met expectations.
