Construction Update March 2013 - Issue No. 4

Regional Rail Link Welcome to the March edition of the City – Maribyrnong River (CMR) Construction Update.

The project continues to stay on track and is progressing well with a lot of activity occurring along the entire alignment. Works are continuing on piling for the Maribyrnong River rail overpass and flyover structure in Footscray, the freight rail underpass in North Melbourne, and have commenced on the new Dudley Street rail bridge in Railway Place, West Melbourne.

This construction update is a great way for you, our neighbours, to stay informed and gain a better picture of how the project is progressing along our section and what works to expect in the coming month.

Project progress Viaduct in Footscray begins to take shape

 Maribyrnong River piling almost complete

Gas main re-coating in West Melbourne commences

Footscray & Kensington:

Widening of the rail corridor towards Hopkins Street in Footscray is almost complete. The old retaining wall on the south side has been removed and reinstated in its new location; these works allow the new Regional Rail Link (RRL) tracks to fit into the rail corridor in this area.

Pre-cast piling is 95 per cent complete on the RRL/Werribee line rail-over-rail flyover. The piles are now being cut back to ground level and ground reinforcement for the structure has begun.

Piles are ongoing on the Maribyrnong River embankment for the Maribyrnong River rail overpass. Three permanent piles in the river have already been completed and the permanent columns for the new bridge have started. These permanent 1200 diameter steel columns are filled with pre-cast concrete, which will remain to support the main beam of the bridge. Piling is continuing to the west of Kensington Road. East of Kensington Road, excavation has commenced in preparation for construction of the retaining wall.

North & West Melbourne:

Gas main re-coating works near Festival Hall have commenced and are expected to continue for several weeks. Site establishment in Railway Place, West Melbourne will commence mid-late March.

The Arrivals Yard in West Melbourne is nearing a major project milestone, with the train equipment rooms ready for commissioning in March. Works on the security fencing, pedestrian and vehicle underpasses are also progressing well towards completion.

Want to keep up to date with progress?
