BEHOLDER WINS VANITY UNDER HAND RIDEBy Jeremy Balan
Regardless of the competition or the distance,
Spendthrift Farm's Beholder just keeps rolling.
In the $400,000 Vanity Mile (gr. I) at Santa Anita
Park June 4, the three-time champion only broke a
sweat because of the nearly 90-degree temperatures
in Arcadia, Calif.
Turning back to a mile for the first time since
September 2013, the daughter of Henny Hughes
raced just off crawling fractions set by stretch-out
sprinter Lost Bus. Beholder took command without
any urging from Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens
in the final turn, and effortlessly held off a late drive
from fellow champion Stellar Wind to win by 1 1/2
lengths.
Stevens hand-rode the 6-year-old mare to the
wire finishing in 1:35.97 on a fast main track for her

WAGERING ON U.S. RACES FALLS ABOUT 4% IN MAY Preakness day registered record handle but with the Kentucky Derby day handle down slightly from last year's record mark, wagering on U.S. races in the month of May fell 3.95% when compared with the same month last year.

eighth straight win, all in stakes competition.
She now has 10 grade I victories for Hall of Fame
trainer Richard Mandella.
"She continues to amaze us all," Mandella said.
"There was a time when we didn't think she'd go
long. She seems to adjust to what we're doing. I'm
lucky to experience something that very few people
in history have—to have a great horse this long.
"Good horses come along, and there are a few
great ones, but to be great and stay great, it really
is special."
Beholder broke well from post 2, and Stevens
was able to get her off the rail as Lost Bus cleared
the field from post 5 and hit the front going into
the first turn. With fractions of :25.03 and :49.31
through a half-mile, Beholder was only a half-
length back in second, then took her own half-
length advantage as six furlongs went in 1:12.53.
Stellar Wind loomed on the rail under jockey Victor
Espinoza and found space in the stretch, but never
made a serious challenge.
"I almost wondered if it was a mistake when I
saw :25," Mandella added. "I didn't think you could
do that, but you've seen her work. She'll work real-
ly slow if we want, and she'll work fast if we want.
She's really turned into a professional."
Stellar Wind, the 2015 champion 3-year-old
filly, ran well in her first start off a more than
seven-month layoff, following a second-place
finish in the Breeders' Cup Distaff (gr. I).
Lost Bus tired to finish fourth, followed by
Divina Comedia to complete the order of finish. All
Star Bub and Taris were scratched.
Beholder now has a 17-3-0 record from 22
starts, with more than $4.7 million in earnings.
Spendthrift owner B. Wayne Hughes said the
"Breeders' Cup in November is the main goal" for
his standout racemare, but also that another run
in the Pacific Classic (gr. I) at Del Mar against males
"is our intention right now." BH

MIDNIGHT STORM TURNS TABLES IN SHOEMAKERBy Claire Novak
Midnight Storm lost the $400,000 Shoemaker
Mile (gr. IT) last year by a half-length—this time
he would not be denied.
Leading from start to finish under jockey Rafael
Bejarano, A Venneri Racing and Little Red Feather's
5-year-old son of Pioneerof the Nile first turned back
a challenge from multiple graded stakes winner
Heart to Heart and then held off Tourist to claim his
first grade I score June 4 at Santa Anita Park.
The Phil D'Amato runner rebounded from a lack-
luster seventh in the May 7 Woodford Reserve Turf
Classic Stakes (gr. IT) at Churchill Downs, finishing the
mile on firm turf in 1:33.55.
"It's vindication because I thought he should have
won it last year; he was kind of up against it," D'Ama-
to said. "He vindicated himself and now he's a grade
I winner."
The Shoemaker Mile is a Breeders' Cup Challenge
"Win and You're In" event
for the Breeders' Cup Mile
(gr. IT), and guarantees
the winner a berth in the
starting gate with pre-en-
try and entry fees paid.
"Onward to the Breed-
ers' Cup," D'Amato said.
Midnight Storm did
not run that race in 2015,
ending his season instead
with a victory in the Nov.
27 Seabiscuit Handicap
(gr. IIT) at Del Mar.
This year, quickly
ranging over from the
outside post in a field of
six, Midnight Storm got
the advantage over Heart
to Heart and put up fast
opening fractions of :22.68
and :46 flat.
"He had his ears up
doing it." D' Amato said.
"I thought Rafael saved a little bit at the top of the
lane."
After three-quarters in 1:09.95, Midnight Storm
put away Heart to Heart, but then had Tourist to
contend with, who closed with a huge run around
the final turn and made a strong effort through
seven-eighths in 1:21.75. Midnight Storm would not
be denied, digging deep and pulling clear just in time.
The win was a second consecutive in the race for
Bejarano, who last year handed Midnight Storm his
defeat aboard Talco.
Midnight Storm and Tourist finished 4 1/4 lengths
in front of third-placed Twentytwentyvision, while 4-5
choice Heart to Heart wound up fourth after press-
ing the pace early. Cape Wolfe and Home Run Kitten
completed the order of finish.
Bred in Kentucky by Alex Venneri and Marjorie
Post Dye out of the Bertrando mare My Tina, Mid-
night Storm was a $38,000 RNA at the 2012 Keene-
land September yearling sale consigned by Vinery
Sales. He improved his record to six wins and three
seconds from 16 starts. BH

AGA KHAN HOMEBRED HARZAND WINS EPSOM DERBYBy Frank Angst
The Aga Khan’s homebred Harzand moved to the
lead in midstretch of the Investec Epsom Der-
by (Eng-I) and fought off a challenge from US Army
Ranger to win the 1 1/2-mile classic June 4 at Epsom
Downs.
Jockey Pat Smullen picked up his first Epsom Der-
by win after delivering a well-timed move, opening
a clear advantage passing Idaho in midstretch and
then fending off runner-up US Army Ranger, the 7-2
favorite, for a 1 1/2-length victory in the £1,545,000
($2.25 million) classic, the most lucrative race ever
run in Great Britain.
Trained by Dermot Weld, who also secured his
first Epsom Derby win, late-developing Harzand
successfully completed a big jump in class. The son
of 2009 Epsom Derby winner Sea The Stars didn't
register his maiden win until a 16-length romp in his
3-year-old debut March 26 at Cork.
He entered the Derby off a clear victory in the P.W.
McGrath Memorial Ballysax Stakes (Ire-III) April 10 at
Leopardstown.
Harzand faced a physical challenge before the
race as he suffered a sore foot caused by a shoeing
problem and was almost scratched.
"We had a huge worry this morning because he
spread a plate travelling over and he was a very
doubtful runner right up until about an hour ago,"
Weld said. "With tremendous help from all of my
colleagues and my team, we made it."
Harzand is the fifth Epsom Derby winner for the
present Aga Khan, joining Shergar, 1981; Shahrastani,
1986; Kahyasi, 1988; and Sinndar, 2000.
"This is a major gift for everybody who works with
me in this wonderful activity. To win a fifth Derby for
the family is obviously very historic," said the Aga Khan
after matching his grandfather's five Epsom Derby wins.
Harzand is out of the group III-winning Xaar
mare Hazariya, who also produced group III win-
ner Harasiya (Pivotal) and stakes winner Hazarafa
(Daylami).
Sent off at 13-2, Harzand completed the 1 1/2-mile
test on good to soft ground in 2:40.09. US Army Rang-
er followed him home and it was 1 1/4 lengths back
to third-place Idaho, who was five lengths ahead of
fourth-place Wings of Desire, a supplemental entrant.
Aidan O’Brien, who was vying for his sixth Derby
win, trained the second- and third-place finishers.
In an earlier race favored Postponed secured his
third career group I
win and fifth straight
win when he drew
off late for an easy 4
1/2-length score in
the 1 1/2-mile Queen
Elizabeth II Coro-
nation Cup (Eng-I).

(gr. IT) winner Found

CATCH A GLIMPSE 'NEVER IN DOUBT'By Frank Angst
Facing males for the first time proved no problem
for Catch a Glimpse, as Canada's 2015 Horse of the
Year waltzed to an easy victory in the $500,000 Penn
Mile Stakes (gr. IIIT) June 4 on the Hollywood Casino
at Penn National Race Course turf.
After leading throughout, Catch a Glimpse put
the race on ice in the early stretch where she quickly
opened a big advantage coming off the far turn un-
der some urging from jockey Florent Geroux. Sta-
blemate Airoforce never threatened for the win, but
the grade II winner closed well to finish 2 1/4 lengths
back in second, completing the exacta for trainer
Mark Casse.
From early in the race Catch a Glimpse looked a
likely choice to secure her seventh straight win and
sixth straight stakes score, as the City Zip filly raced
within herself while enjoying a clear lead at every
point of call. She cruised through a half-mile in :47.96
and six furlongs in 1:11.39 before opening a three-
length advantage in midstretch. Not asked for much
late, Catch a Glimpse completed the mile turf race for
3-year-olds in 1:34.39 on firm turf.
The performance earned the comment, "never in
doubt," on the official race chart.
Undefeated on turf, Catch a Glimpse becomes
racing's newest millionaire, her earnings standing
at $1,213,053. Giant Run finished third, one length
behind Airoforce. Oscar Nominated, who's previous
race was the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum!
Brands, finished fifth behind Silent Waters.
Out of stakes winner Halo River, by Irish River,
Catch a Glimpse is a half sister to grade III winner Old
Forester, by Forestry.
The evening card opened with the $200,000 Penn
Oaks, where Peter Leidel and George Bolton's Sweet
Victory secured a second straight stakes win and
third straight win overall. The Blame filly drew clear in
the stretch to register a 1 1/2-length win over 7-5 fa-
vorited Pricedtoperfection. Trained by Todd Pletcher,
Sweet Victory was guided to
victory by Javier Castellano.
Involuntary was disqual-
ified from third to last of
five after ducking in near
the eighth pole under
Trevor McCarthy, causing
Conquest Serenade to clip
heels and fall, unseating
Geroux. Conquest Sere-
nade appeared to be in
good condition as she
quickly got back up and
was walked off the course
by Geroux.
Geroux came back to win
the third and fourth races,
guiding S'maverlous to a
win in the Mountainview
Handicap before his score
on Catch a Glimpse. BH

SONGBIRD WORKS BULLET AT SANTA ANITABy Blood-Horse Staff
Undefeated champion Songbird worked six fur-
longs in 1:13 flat under regular rider Mike Smith
June 4 at Santa Anita Park.
The daughter of Medaglia d'Oro is gearing up for a
return to racing since missing the Longines Kentucky
Oaks (gr. I) because of a fever.
The time equaled the fastest of nine drills at the
distance, tied with Angels Flight Stakes winner Bel-
lamentary, who was also clocked in 1:13 for leading
trainer Phil D'Amato.
Songbird's fractional times were :36 2/5, :48 2/5,
and 1:00 4/5, with a gallop out to six furlongs in 1:28.
"It was a very nice work," said Hall of Fame trainer
Jerry Hollendorfer, who conditions Songbird for Rick
Porter's Fox Hill Farms. "She went off slow, finished
up fast, and galloped out nice in 1:28."
Hollendorfer reiterated the June 18 Summertime
Oaks (gr. II) "is possible" for Songbird's first start since
her victory in the April 9 Santa Anita Oaks (gr. I). BH

NYQUIST FEELING GOOD AND READY TO TRAVELBy Blood-Horse Staff
Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I)
winner Nyquist spent his last morning on the main
track at Pimlico Race Course with an energetic two-
mile jog June 4.
It was the third straight day of training for the
2015 champion 2-year-old male, who is scheduled to
return to trainer Doug O'Neill's base at Santa Anita
Park June 5.
Nyquist suffered his first career loss, a third in the
May 21 Preakness Stakes (gr. I), and exited the race
with a fever and an elevated white blood cell count
that caused O'Neill and owners Paul and Zillah Red-
dam to scrap plans to meet Preakness winner Exag-
gerator in the June 11 Belmont Stakes (gr. I).
"He's great this morning. We jogged two (laps) this
morning, and I need a new right arm. He's full of en-
ergy and kind of dragged us around there and came
back to the barn full of en-
ergy," said O'Neill's assis-
tant trainer Jack Sisterson,
who accompanied Nyquist
on the pony. "We're happy
with the way he went this
morning."
Since his illness
Nyquist had been limited
to walking the shedrow
at Barn D behind the
Preakness Stakes Barn at
Pimlico before returning
with an easy jog June 2.
"He's the boss of the
barn, so whatever Nyquist
wants to do, Nyquist does.
We let him be happy and
do what he wants," Sister-
son said. "He's looking for-
ward to seeing his boss,
Doug, and the owners
Paul and Zillah. He's hap-
py. He knows he's flying
back tomorrow, and we're
excited to put him back on
the plane."
It will be the first time Nyquist has been back to
California since shipping East for the April 2 Xpress-
bet.com Florida Derby (gr. I) at Gulfstream Park
where he defeated previously unbeaten multiple
graded-stakes winner Mohaymen.
No plans have been made for Nyquist’s next start.
"He's been on the road for a while. Pink's Hot
Dogs is throwing a party for him on Wednesday, so
he's happy about that," Sisterson said. "We're going
to kind of load the van around 9 o'clock here and
once the van's loaded, we'll put Nyquist on and away
he goes. He loves to fly and travel, and he's looking
forward to getting back home."
With several O'Neill-trained runners pointed to
stakes during Belmont Stakes Racing Festival June
9-11, Sisterson heads in another direction.
"We're actually headed to New York, so we're
looking forward to that with the ones we have," he
said. BH

FOGGY MORNING TRAINING FOR CALIFORNIA CHROMEBy Jeremy Balan
California Chrome was a blur during much of his
workout at Los Alamitos Race Course June 4 but
not because he ran particularly fast.
On an unusually foggy Saturday morning, the
2014 Horse of the Year was barely visible down the
backstretch and in the far turn under regular exercise
rider Dihigi Gladney, but he emerged at the top of
the stretch with his familiar powerful strides.
After the 5-year-old son of Lucky Pulpit hit the
wire, trainer Art Sherman looked at his stopwatch
from his perch at Schwanies At The Gap, just beyond
the Los Al eighth pole, somewhat unsure.
"I've got—something," Sherman said.
A quick phone call to clocker Russ Hudak con-
firmed the time for California Chrome's fourth work-
out since his Dubai World Cup Sponsored by Emir-
ates Airline (UAE-I) victory.
He hit the wire in :48 3/5 and galloped out five fur-
longs in 1:01 2/5. Hudak timed his first quarter-mile
in :26 and three furlongs in :37 2/5.
"He was striding out down the lane," Sherman said
of California Chrome's early-morning move during
his normal private session at about 5:30 a.m. PT. "He
looked like a big train to me. That makes my morn-
ing, when I can see him run. What a difference.
"Down the lane he looked perfect, and the gallop
out was really strong."
The drill, in preparation for the July 23 San Diego
Handicap (gr. II) at Del Mar, followed two half-mile
breezes, :49 4/5 May 21 and :48 4/5 May 28, which
were preceded by a three-furlong move in :36 2/5
May 14, his first since returning to California from a
short break at Taylor Made Farm in Kentucky follow-
ing his Dubai trip.
"Each week he's going faster," Sherman said. "You
can just see the steady clip on him. He's like a big
train. He does everything so easy, but that's what
good horses do. They make it look effortless."
A few hours later Sherman headed north to sad-
dle Mucho Chrome in a maiden special weight event
at Santa Anita Park, and he'll get a chance to scope
out the competition for this summer's TVG Pacific
Classic (gr. I).
"I've got to get him tuned up for that filly," Sherman
said of Beholder, the defending Pacific Classic champ
who won Saturday’s Vanity Mile (gr. I), adding before
that race, "We're going
to get a good look at
the competition." BH

CAMELOT KITTEN PREVAILS IN PENNINE RIDGEBy Blood-Horse Staff
Ken and Sarah Ramsey’s homebred Camelot Kitten
prevailed in a tight three-horse finish in the $200,000
Pennine Ridge Stakes (gr. IIIT) June 4 on the inner turf at
Belmont Park.
The Chad Brown-trained Camelot Kitten hit the
wire in 1:46.41 for 1 1/8 miles, besting Highland Sky
by a neck, and stablemate Call Provision a nose back
in third.
Camelot Kitten came off a narrow win in the
American Turf Stakes (gr. IIT) May 7 at Churchill
Downs and posted his second consecutive graded
stakes victory and third win from six career starts,
all on turf.
"Camelot Kitten ran great," Brown said. "He got a
terrific trip on the inside saving all the ground. (Irad
Ortiz Jr.) worked out a beautiful trip with the horse.
He's now 2-for-2 with blinkers and he's a horse that's
starting to figure it all out."
"I got a perfect trip. I can't complain," Ortiz said. "I
broke out of there and saved some ground. He kicked
from the three-eighths pole; he was there when I
asked. He's a nice horse; he does everything you ask.
It's easier when you ride those kind of horses."
Toughest 'Ombre, trained by Thomas Albertrani,
went off at 99-1 but started strong from post 9 to lead
while setting fractions of :23:02, :47.90 and 1:16.47
through six furlongs.
Camelot Kitten tracked the pace from the inside
and made a move at the three-eighths pole to pass
Highland Sky. Call Provision, who finished in the
money in his second career start and first in a graded
race, went six wide at the quarter pole with Jose Ortiz
before losing out on second by the slimmest margin.
"Call Provision ran great," Brown said. "At certain
points of the race I loved him. When they were going
for home I thought he had nothing, and then when
he felt Camelot Kitten come through, Jose told me he
reengaged on the
bit and ran again."
Toughest 'Om-

TAKE COVER OUTRUNS VETERANBy Claire Novak
Veteran Ben's Cat was upstaged by a youngster
with a good future ahead of him June 4 in the
$150,000 Pennsylvania Governor's Cup at Hollywood
Casino at Penn National Race Course.
Charging to his third straight victory and picking
up his first stakes score, Take Cover took over in the
five-furlong turf sprint while Ben's Cat finished third
behind Spring to the Sky.
The race was a first step into stakes competition
for the 4-year-old War Front colt trained by Alan
Goldberg for Colt's Neck Stables. Although he broke
his maiden after six starts with a few gaps between
races, Take Cover is undefeated since finding the
winner's circle March 4 at Fair Grounds Race Course
& Slots.
An April 29 allowance win at Laurel Park proved
a stepping stone to next-level success, which Take
Cover achieved in the Governor's Cup under jockey
Joe Bravo.
Take Cover closed from fourth after rating behind
Spring to the Sky and Boot Scootn Daddy. He swung
out as the field turned for home and passed the
leaders en route to win on firm turf.
Bred in Kentucky by Padua Stables, Take Cover is
out of the Farma Way mare Juliet's Way. He was a pri-
vate purchase by Colt's Neck after failing to meet his
reserve on a $320,000 final bid as a weanling at the
2012 Keeneland November breeding stock sale. BH
ALSVID DEFENDS ARISTIDES TITLEBy Jeremy Balan
Black Hawk Stable's Alsvid successfully defended
his title in the $100,000 Aristides Stakes (gr. III)
June 4 at Churchill Downs and snapped an 11-race
winless streak in the process.
Since last year's Aristides, the 7-year-old Officer
gelding has been more than competitive with in-the-
money finishes in his last seven starts, but thrived on
the familiar Churchill main track Saturday, holding
off a charge from favored Limousine Liberal to win
by a head.
Under jockey Chris Landeros, the Chris Hart-
man-trained runner broke best and relaxed soon
after to let Union Jackson take command of the lead.
Alsvid raced a half-length off the pace of :22.08 and
:45.10 through a half-mile, put a head in front in the
stretch with Limousine Liberal looming on the out-
side. Alsvid finished off the six furlongs in 1:08.26 on

"He's got it, man," Landeros said. "Honestly
though, 1:08 and 1/5, I can't say he lost a step. He's
pretty incredible. I'm kind of speechless today more
than anything. He beat some real nice horses today."
Alsvid's third graded stakes win, and 14th victory
overall, he now has more than $1.2 million in earnings.
"Chris put a beautiful ride on him so it was a per-
fect trip, perfect ride and everything went smooth,"
Hartman said. "That's a perfect race for that horse. It
was a good race." BH

ESTIMATING OPTIMAL WINNING DISTANCE
The upcoming Belmont Stakes (gr. I) serves as
a good excuse to illustrate how to estimate a
runner’s optimal racing distance.
The estimates for Belmont probables in the
supplemental table are based on the distance
proclivities of sires in each runner’s family.
The sire provides half the foal’s DNA, so it’s
logical to use a 50% weighting for the aver-
age winning distance of the sire’s runners in a
formula estimating a runner’s optimal racing
distance.
The dam’s sire provides 25% of the foal’s DNA
because he provides half of the DNA transmit-
ted by the dam to the foal, so weight the AWD
of the damsire’s runners by 25% in the formula.
The sire of the second dam of a foal provides
12.5% of the foal’s DNA, so use 12.5% for his
contribution.
Now 87.5% of the foal’s DNA (50% + 25% +
12.5%) is accounted for. It is possible to go back
additional generations to account for higher
percentages of the foal’s genes, but in practice
we’re limited to three generations because reli-
able data on AWDs have only been collected in
recent decades.
Using this weighting method, here are esti-
mates of the optimal racing distance for poten-
tial Belmont
starters, plus
those for Dan-
zing Candy, the
pacesetter in
the Derby.
Lani, the
Belmont runner
with the high-
est estimated
optimal AWD, is
by Tapit, whose
AWD is 7.5, but
Lani’s damsire is Sunday Silence, whose runners’
AWD is 8.7, and the sire of Lani’s second dam is
Sadler's Wells, whose runners’ AWD is 10.7
Though probably very close to best estimates
to be had without spending extensive time re-
searching historical AWDs, these estimates are
imperfect.
Influences from beyond the third generation
were left out because of data limitations. Also
an upward adjustment was made (I estimate by
.2 to .3) to the reported AWDs for Cherry Wine
and Mo Tom because their second-year sires’ re-
ported AWDs are lower than they will be as ma-
ture stallions. We are also ignoring the influence
on distance capabilities of the mitochondrial
DNA passed on by maternal inheritance.
It’s not surprising that my estimated optimal
AWDs of projected Belmont runners are higher
than those of this year’s Derby horses. Perhaps
Danzing Candy should have run in the Belmont.
Like Bold Forbes in 1976, he might have been
able to coast through a 47-second half mile in a
wire-to-wire victory.
For an illustration of the formula for esti-
mating optimal racing distance, as well as more
detail on statistical and genetic considerations,
see rllosey.com. BH

Stacked Deck and Bye Bye Bernie will most likely find themselves in front of this field, but while Stacked Deck has more graded stakes experi-ence, Passion for Action may be the one to beat. He's won his last 2 stakes, with a victory over Stacked Deck last out. Glenville Gardens makes his first start since 2015 and is a bit of a question mark.—M.R.
