Millsaps Conservatory of Music Spring Semester 2016 Dr. Kazuaki Shiota Music Theory/Musicianship Classes Two sections of Music Theory/Musicianship will be offered: Section 1 – 7 th -9 th grade Section 2 – 10 th -12 th grade The starting times and days of the meetings will be decided by the instructor and the students prior to the first meeting. Classes will begin the week of January 25 th , and continue through the week of April 18 th . Tuition for the class is $200. Students can enter at any level. Theory classes will include writing and ear training components to enhance musical communication and analytical skills. Music Theory class curriculum will be designed to prepare students for the following music theory exams: The Advanced Placement (AP) Exam The Royal Conservatory of Music Development Program (MDP) The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Private Composition Lessons Composition lessons will include the four different areas of study listed below, allowing students to develop their own musical expressions. Students will present their works at the end of each semester. Classical Music Model Composition (e.g., Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic) Songwriting (e.g., with guitar, keyboard, DAW) Music for Self-Made Instruments (e.g., PVC pipe marimba, PVC flute, glockenspiel made of tools, amplified small objects) Computer music (e.g., laptop orchestra, soundscape for relaxation, live electronics, electro-acoustic music, video game music and sound effects, ring tones) Composition lessons will begin the week of January 11 th . Tuition for 14 private lessons: 30- minute $560 ~ 45- minute $700 ~ 60- minute $840. Lesson times will be arranged between students and Dr. Shiota. About the Instructor: Composer, instrument builder, singer, tap dancer, violinist, guitarist, percussionist, and ukulele player, Dr. Kazuaki Shiota began is musical studies with guitar when he was a high school student in Japan, composing numerous pieces for his rock band. Dr. Shiota studied a wide range of composition techniques at the University of North Texas and University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music. His recent compositions include components of technology, multidisciplinary, and cross cultures, using Max (Cycling '74) and Shiota & Wissel’s ISDNS (Interactive Sonic Dance Notation System) to compose multi-media performing arts. He has successfully taught composition and theory students at the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music, both at the preparatory and undergraduate level.
