Consents – Variation 5 – Taupo Map Select the map from the Maps introduction page http://www.waikatoregion.govt.nz/Maps/

If you have the map browser open the Variation 5 - Taupo map will display when selected in the top right of the Map Window.

DOCS# 3220250

The map is initially centred on the Taupo area of the region. The Variation 5 Catchment and Near Shore Zones are clearly shown as coloured shaded areas in the map window and legend. State Highways, TA Boundary, Regional Boundary and Google maps are initially shown to give context. These specific instructions for the Variation 5 - Taupo map should be read in conjunction with the standard tools (http://gis.waikatoregion.govt.nz/wrcmaps/pdf/standard_tools.pdf) guide that covers basic tools available on the map (like zooming in and out etc). The legend shows all the layers available for users on this map.

The Catchment and Near Shore Zone are shown as blue / mauve lines (and shading depending on the scale.)

The Properties (Rating Units) are coloured in shades of Red, Yellow and Green to indicate where they are inside or out of the Near Shore zone and/or Catchment

The Base Layers give context to guide you around the map. The Google maps can be used in conjunction with the Base maps layers to give you further context to guide you around the map. The latest Aerial photography Images (2012) is provided as a back drop at scales between 1:1.000 and 1:20,000

To turn on or off layers check or uncheck the tick box in the legend next to the name to toggle between on and off.

Main Workflow

Browse to find out if you are in the Variation 5 Catchment

Select the Zoom By Area Tool from the top toolbar.

1. Left mouse click in the map to define the first corner of the area, move the mouse and the pink zoom area box is drawn as shown below.

2. Left mouse click again to finish selecting area and the zoom area box turns pink. 3. The map will be re-centred and zoomed into this area.

DOCS# 3220250

As you zoom in past 1:100,000 property boundaries become visible.

As shown above the properties are shaded to indicate:

Red = Property completely, or partially, in Near Shore Zone and Catchment

Yellow = Property completely, or partially, in Catchment

Green = property outside of catchment.

Important notes about the above classification:

1) Due to the nature of hydrological catchments and scale at which they were collected this classification is indicative only. See the metadata for full details. (http://www.waikatoregion.govt.nz/Environment/Environmental-information/REDI/1016036/)

2) A single property is based on the „Rating Unit‟ made up of the legal parcels shown on your rates bill. This means all parts of the rating unit will be classified as in the catchment even if only one parcel actually falls within the catchment.

3) Where only a small part of a property is inside the catchment the whole property is classified as such

4) Properties that are near (within 200m) the catchment still may come under the variation 5 rules.

DOCS# 3220250

5) The data is indicative only. In all cases please contact Waikato Regional Council on 0800 800 401 to confirm the exact rules and how they may apply to your property.

As you zoom in past 1:20,000 the aerial photography backdrop automatically turns on and the colour classification shading becomes transparent.

The transparent shading aids finding a particular feature or property shown on the aerial photography and makes it clearer where the catchment boundary falls. As you hover your mouse pointer over the properties note that a pop-up label tells you the address and classification.

A (red) property that is within or partially in, the catchment and Near Shore Zone.

A (yellow) property that is within or partially in, the catchment.

DOCS# 3220250

A (green) property that is outside the catchment.

If you click on a highlighted property, as shown above with the Feature Info tool , you get some basic details about the property from the council database, for properties outside the Taupo catchment you get our standard property report.

DOCS# 3220250

If the property is indicatively shown in the Taupo Catchment or Near Shore Zone you will see a slightly different message as shown above. Catchment details and Near Shore Zone details below

At scales less than 1:20,000, when the aerial photograph is shown behind the transparent shading you will see (as in the example below) that there are properties where the shading becomes less transparent.

This is because there are several rating units that have an equal share in the same piece of land. The darker the shading the more rating units share the land. To discover all the property numbers with an interest in such land use the „Select By Point‟ tool to get a list.

Click on the „Select Features By Point‟ tool and then the „Add selected features to clip board‟

DOCS# 3220250

A report is generated in the clip board listing all the interests in the property.

Tip: To ensure you are able to query a layer ensure it is in the svgz format.

Please Note: For refreshing the Map the performance is better in png format. Map Performance

will be slower at scales > 1:25,000

Query to find out if you are in the Variation 5 Catchment

Select the Simple Query Window Tool from the Tools Tab.

Rather than browsing the map to find out if a location is within the catchment there are seven queries available (Address, Consents, Road, Places, Valuation, Legal and Mark_IT) that can be used to find a location. Each one works in a similar way. You enter the information in the boxes as prompted, results are shown and when selected the map automatically zooms to that location. For example in the Address query you enter both a House Number and all or the beginning part of the Street Name e.g. entering Vic will find both Victoria and Victory. There is no need to enter Street, St, Road Rd etc the name is sufficient.

Click button to start the

search.

The query will return all the addresses that match what you have entered.

DOCS# 3220250

Click on the Taupo District record and the map window will zoom automatically to that address and highlight it „hot pink‟.

As shown in this example the property is shaded, as before, to indicate if it is in or out of the catchment. Red = In the Near Shore Zone. Yellow = In the Catchment Green = Outside the catchment.

Search for a location on the Map with NZTM coordinates

This query allows you to enter NZTM map coordinates and center the map on the location on the map.

Click the Centering map with an input NZTM coordinate Tool from the Tools tab. Enter your NZTM easting and northing as shown.

Click Center and the map will zoom to that location at a default scale of 1:1,000

DOCS# 3220250

…and maps zooms to point at the center of the Map Window

You can now clearly see if the entered location in inside or outside the catchment You may need to zoom in or out to see the surrounding properties.

Note: be sure you are reading and entering the correct numbers, as the system cannot detect incorrectly entered numbers, missing numbers or extra numbers…

Search for location using other queries

There are other queries work in a similar way to the Address query and can be used to find locations. As with previous examples you will then be able to see if the searched for location is inside or outside the catchment by the shading applied to the area / and or the pop up labels in the area.

Search for location using the Consent Query

In the Consents query you need to enter a valid resource consent number (or the first part of it) e.g. entering 12257 will return all the consents that start with those numbers.

Click button to start the search. The query will return all the consents that match the number you entered. Below is an example from the older Web maps.

DOCS# 3220250

Click on a row and the map zooms to the found consent.

You can use the Feature Info tool to click on the map and get a report of the property details etc.

Tip: To return to the default Pan tool (“the hand”) try a left click in the Map Window.

DOCS# 3220250

The map window will zoom automatically to that consent and highlight it „hot pink‟.

If you hover your mouse over the property the consent is in, it gives the label that indicates the address and whether it is in or out of the catchment.

Tip: To clear highlighted features in the map between queries use the Refresh Map tool

DOCS# 3220250

Road Query: In the Road query enter all or the beginning part of the Road Name e.g. entering Waia will find both Waianiwa Place and Waiari Road.

Click button to start the search.

Click on the Richmond Heights record and the map window will zoom automatically to that road name.

Places Query:

In the Places Query enter all or the beginning part of any topographic Place Name (town, stream, hill etc) e.g. entering “lake taupo” will return any place that starts with “lake taupo”.

Click button to start the search. To select all the Places you can click on the top row and then Shift click on the bottom row to zoom to all of them.

The Selected Geographic Place Names are shown in green points.
