The ministry of the Church is the ministry of Christ, its chief shepherd andhigh priest. Those who are ordained are called to share Christ’s work: tospeak in his name and build up the Church of which he is the head.

This service of ordination perpetuates a pattern of ministry in directcontinuity – through a long line of succession – with the apostles. Just asJesus commissioned his first disciples, so by the laying on of hands thearchbishop will commission these disciples to mission. That is, to witnessto the resurrection and to preach the good news of salvation in all theworld. The particular role of bishops – while remaining deacons and priests– is to proclaim and guard the faith, to preside at the sacraments, to leadthe Church’s prayer and to hand on its ministry.

During the service the candidates will be asked to confirm theircommitment to these priorities. The archbishop will ask all who arepresent to undertake to support the ordination of these candidates, notleast because as bishops they will act not just on behalf of particular localChristian communities, but of the whole Church. This is followed by theinvocation of the Holy Spirit and the laying on of hands. John, Simon andVivienne will be anointed with sacred oil, signifying their role of leadershipwithin the royal priesthood of Christ’s people; they will receive a copy ofthe Holy Scriptures, both to remind them of their duty to proclaim theGospel and of the centrality of God’s Word; and they will receive a PastoralStaff, symbolising their sharing in the ministry of Christ the GoodShepherd.

Christ’s mission is the fundamental and unifying reality for all ministry. Itturns the Church outwards towards the world that God loved so muchthat he sent his only Son. It prepares the Church for that goal and end ofall things, when Christ himself will present to the Father a world madeperfect by his work – when all his people share in the joyful communion oflove that binds the Father and the Son, in the unity of the Holy Spirit.

The Greeting

Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.Blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen.

There is one body and one spirit.There is one hope to which we were called;

one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all.

Peace be with youand also with you.

God calls his people to follow Christ, and forms us into a royalpriesthood, a holy nation, to declare the wonderful deeds of him who hascalled us out of darkness into his marvellous light.

The Church is the Body of Christ, the people of God and the dwelling-placeof the Holy Spirit. In baptism the whole Church is summoned to witnessto God’s love and to work for the coming of his kingdom.

To serve this royal priesthood, God has given particular ministries. Bishopsare ordained to be shepherds of Christ’s flock and guardians of the faith ofthe apostles, proclaiming the gospel of God’s kingdom and leading hispeople in mission. Obedient to the call of Christ and in the power of theHoly Spirit, they are to gather God’s people and celebrate with them thesacraments of the new covenant. Thus formed into a single communion offaith and love, the Church in each place and time is united with the Churchin every place and time.

Gradual Hymn

Sing choirs of heaven! Let saints and angels sing!

Around God’s throne exult in harmony.

Now Jesus Christ is risen from the grave.

Salute your King in glorious symphony.

Sing choirs of earth! Behold, your light has come!

The glory of the Lord shines radiantly.

Lift up your hearts, for Christ has conquered death.

The night is past; the day of life is here.

Sing Church of God! Exult with joy outpoured!

The gospel trumpets tell of victory won.

Your Saviour lives: he’s with you evermore.

Let all God’s people shout the long Amen.

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.

The Choir sings and all repeat

Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with themwhen Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, ‘We have seen the Lord.’But he said to them, ‘Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and putmy finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe.’

A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was withthem. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among themand said, ‘Peace be with you.’ Then he said to Thomas, ‘Put your finger hereand see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do notdoubt but believe.’ Thomas answered him, ‘My Lord and my God!’ Jesussaid to him, ‘Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed arethose who have not seen and yet have come to believe.’

The Nicene Creed

We believe in one God,

the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is,

seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God,

eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God,

begotten, not made,

of one Being with the Father;

through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation

he came down from heaven,

was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary,

and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again

in accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit,

the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified,

who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come.

Amen.

The Liturgy of Ordination

The Declarations

The Ordinands stand before the Archbishop, who addresses the congregation,

saying

Bishops are called to serve and care for the flock of Christ. Mindful of theGood Shepherd, who laid down his life for his sheep, they are to love andpray for those committed to their charge, knowing their people and beingknown by them. As principal ministers of word and sacrament, stewards ofthe mysteries of God, they are to preside at the Lord’s table and to leadthe offering of prayer and praise. They are to feed God’s pilgrim people, and so build up the Body of Christ.

They are to baptize and confirm, nurturing God’s people in the life of theSpirit and leading them in the way of holiness. They are to discern andfoster the gifts of the Spirit in all who follow Christ, commissioningthem to minister in his name. They are to preside over the ordination ofdeacons and priests, and join together in the ordination of bishops.

As chief pastors, it is their duty to share with their fellow presbyters theoversight of the Church, speaking in the name of God and expounding thegospel of salvation. With the Shepherd’s love, they are to be merciful, butwith firmness; to minister discipline, but with compassion. They are to havea special care for the poor, the outcast and those who are in need. Theyare to seek out those who are lost and lead them home with rejoicing, declaring the absolution and forgiveness of sins to those who turn toChrist.

Following the example of the prophets and the teaching of the apostles, they are to proclaim the gospel boldly, confront injustice and work forrighteousness and peace in all the world.

19

The Ordination Prayer

The Ordinands kneel before the Archbishop.

We praise and glorify you, almighty Father, because in your infinite love youhave formed throughout the world a holy people for your ownpossession, a royal priesthood, a universal Church. We praise and glorifyyou because you sent your only Son Jesus Christ, the image of youreternal and invisible glory, the firstborn of all creation and head of theChurch. We praise and glorify you that by his death he has overcomedeath; and that, having ascended into heaven, he poured out your HolySpirit upon his disciples, to give them power to preach the gospel to theends of the earth and to build up your people in love.

And now we give you thanks that you have called these your servants, whom we ordain in your name, to share as bishops in the ministry of thegospel of Christ, the Apostle and High Priest of our faith and the Shepherdof our souls.

Therefore, Father, through Christ our Lord we pray:

Here the Archbishop and other bishops lay their hands on the heads of the

Ordinands, and the Archbishop says

Send down the Holy Spirit on your servant Name,

for the office and work of a bishop in your Church.

The Archbishop continues

Through your Spirit, heavenly Father, fill these your servants with the graceand power which you gave to your apostles, that as true shepherds theymay feed and govern your flock, and lead them in proclaiming the gospel ofyour salvation in the world. Make them steadfast as guardians of the faithand sacraments, wise as teachers and faithful in presiding at the worship ofyour people. Through them, with their fellow servants in Christ, increaseyour Church and renew its ministry, uniting its members in a holyfellowship of truth and love. Give them humility, that they may use theirauthority to heal, not to hurt; to build up, not to destroy.

Defend them from all evil, that they may, as faithful stewards, be presentedblameless with all your household and, at the last, enter your eternal joy, through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and your HolySpirit, belong glory and honour, worship and praise, now and for ever.Amen.

Preparation of the Table

Offertory Hymn

during which the Deacons place bread and wine on the altar and a collection

is taken to support the work of the Church Urban Fund, Embrace the Middle

East and The Gift of Years.

And can it be that I should gain

An interest in the Saviour’s blood?

Died he for me, who caused his pain?

For me, who him to death pursued?

Amazing love! How can it be

That thou, my God, shouldst die for me?

’Tis mystery all: the Immortal dies!

Who can explore his strange design?

In vain the first-born seraph tries

To sound the depth of love divine.

’Tis mercy all! Let earth adore,

Let angel minds enquire no more.

He left his Father’s throne above –

So free, so infinite his grace –

Emptied himself of all but love,

And bled for Adam’s helpless race.

’Tis mercy all, immense and free;

For, O my God, it found out me!

Long my imprisoned spirit lay

Fast bound in sin and nature’s night;

Thine eye diffused a quickening ray;

I woke, the dungeon flamed with light;

My chains fell off, my heart was free,

I rose, went forth, and followed thee.

No condemnation now I dread;

Jesus, and all in him, is mine!

Alive in him, my living Head,

And clothed in righteousness divine,

Bold I approach the eternal throne,

And claim the crown, through Christ, my own.

The Eucharistic Prayer

The Archbishop says

The Lord be with youand also with you.

Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.It is right to give thanks and praise.

It is indeed right and good that we should give you thanks, praise and glory, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord. Forafter his resurrection he sent out his apostles and evangelists to preach thegospel to all nations and lead us in the way of truth. Himself the chiefcornerstone, he founded his Church upon the apostles firmly to stand forever as a sign of your holiness upon earth and a living witness to all of theway that leads to heaven. And so with angels and archangels, and with allthe company of heaven, we lift our voices and join in their unending hymnof praise:

Holy, holy, holy,Lord God of hosts,Heaven and earth are full of your glory.Glory be to thee, O Lord most high.

Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.Hosanna in the highest.

Lord, you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness; grant that by thepower of your Holy Spirit, and according to your holy will, these gifts ofbread and wine may be to us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ;who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave youthanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is mybody which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the sameway, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which isshed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often asyou drink it, in remembrance of me.

Send the Holy Spirit on your people and gather into one inyour kingdom all who share this one bread and one cup, so that we, in the company of Thomas and all the saints, may praise and glorify you forever, through Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, and inwhom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever.

Hymns during Communion

Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart,

Be all else but naught to me, save that thou art,

Be thou my best thought in the day and the night,

Both waking and sleeping, thy presence my light.

Be thou my wisdom, be thou my true word,

Be thou ever with me, and I with thee, Lord,

Be thou my great Father, thy child let me be,

Be thou in me dwelling, and I one with thee.

Be thou my breastplate, my sword for the fight,

Be thou my whole armour, be thou my true might,

Be thou my soul’s shelter, be thou my strong tower,

O raise thou me heavenward, great Power of my power.

Riches I heed not, nor all the world’s praise,

Be thou my inheritance now and always,

Be thou and thou only the first in my heart,

O Sovereign of heaven, my treasure thou art.

High King of heaven, thou heaven’s bright Sun,

O grant me its joys after vict’ry is won,

Great Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,

Still be thou my vision, O Ruler of all.

Words: Irish, 8th century, Tune: Slane

trans. Mary Byrne (1880-1931), alt. Traditional Irish Melody

Will you come and follow me

If I but call your name?

Will you go where you don’t know

And never be the same?

Will you let my love be shown,

Will you let my name be known,

Will you let my life be grown

In you and you in me?

35

Page 36: Consecration - May 2012 · with the Ordination and Consecration of The Venerable Dr John Perumbalath Archdeacon of Barking to be Bishop of Bradwell in the Diocese of Chelmsford and

Will you leave your self behind

If I but call your name?

Will you care for cruel and kind

And never be the same?

Will you risk the hostile stare

Should your life attract or scare?

Will you let me answer prayer

In you and you in me?

Will you let the blinded see

If I but call your name?

Will you set the prisoners free

And never be the same?

Will you kiss the leper clean,

And do such as this unseen,

And admit to what I mean

In you and you in me?

Will you love the ‘you’ you hide

If I but call your name?

Will you quell the fear inside

And never be the same?

Will you use the faith you’ve found

To reshape the world around,

Through my sight and touch and sound

In you and you in me?

Lord, your summons echoes true

When you but call my name.

Let me turn and follow you

And never be the same.

In your company I’ll go

Where your love and footsteps show.

Thus I’ll move and live and grow

In you and you in me.

Hymn

during which the Archbishop’s procession returns to the west end of the

Cathedral.

Faith overcomes! The light of Christ is shining,

Piercing the doubt and darkness of our world.

Walking in trust, we find the way inclining

To follow in the footsteps of our Lord.

Faith overcomes! The truth of God, unfolding

Wisdom and Word, in cosmic time and space,

Dwells in a single life for our beholding:

Eternal glory in a human face.

Faith overcomes! In Jesus God is teaching,

Healing, forgiving, loving to the end;

To all who know him not his arms outreaching

From Calvary’s cross, our Shepherd and our Friend.

Faith overcomes! The life of Christ, abundant,

Spent and exhausted in the hour of death,

Bursts from the tomb in mystery triumphant,

Makes us alive through his own Spirit’s breath.

Faith overcomes! Christ’s witnesses have spoken:

We have not seen, yet now we dare believe

In him is freedom, peace and joy unbroken,

A gift to share with all who will receive.

Faith overcomes! In Jesus’ love abiding,

We yield ourselves to follow his commands,

Willing to suffer for his name, confiding

Our needs and hopes and fears into his hands.
