Spring 2014

Canterbury’s 20th AnniversaryThis year marks the 20th anniversary of Canterbury-on-the-Lake. Residents and staff are excited to celebrate this wonderful milestone. Yet, as we celebrate and look forward to the future of the community, I think that it is equally important to look back on the rich history of Canterbury, and remember what brought us to where we are today.

In 1855, when Detroit resident Matilda Caniff bequeathed $1,500 to St. Paul’s church “for the purpose of erecting a hospital for the poor…to be called St. Luke’s Hospital,” she planted a seed that would nurture and protect thousands of lives for more than a century and a half. That gift became the seed money that eventually blossomed into St. Luke’s Hospital and Church Home, constructed in 1868. Stemming from the St. Luke’s seed, a new bud was created in 1994 — which we all now know as Canterbury-on-the-Lake. The organization’s name and location continued to morph slightly over the years; however, the mission stayed the same: “Guided by a rich tradition of respect for people of all faiths, to offer the highest quality of housing and health care for today’s and tomorrow’s seniors.”

Canterbury has positioned itself as a frontrunner in senior living and has long been considered the model that new communities strive to replicate. Canterbury has carried out its mission well for generations — and we will continue to care for our seniors in the same loving way for many more generations to come.

Thank you for your support!

Canterbury-on-the-Lake is a continuing care senior living community that offers three levels of care under one roof: Senior Living Apartments, Assisted Living Apartments and a Health Center, which includes short-term rehabilitation and long-term nursing care.

Canterbury-on-the-Lake offers comfort, security and convenience — all in the company of good friends and neighbors.

Canterbury has a continuing commitment to people in need. The Canterbury Good Samaritan Fund provides financial assistance opportunities for residents who would otherwise be unable to continue to live at Canterbury.

Thank you to all who have been a part of the Canterbury community for the past 20 years. We are excited about changing the definition of retirement living — now and in the future!

Bob and his wife of more than 50 years enjoyed their home at Canterbury-on-the-Lake. With no children and limited family, they relied on the Canterbury staff for care and the Canterbury residents for companionship.

After many years at Canterbury, Bob’s wife fell gravely ill and needed to move to the Pavilion, Canterbury’s skilled nursing/rehab community. Bob remained in his apartment (in assisted living) and was extremely grateful that he could visit his wife on a daily basis without leaving the building.

Bob’s wife lived in the Pavilion for more than two years, requiring extensive care and nearly depleting their retirement savings. After she passed away, Bob (now 100 years old), realized that he could no longer afford the place he called home. He desperately wanted to stay —and he really had nowhere else to go.

That’s when the value of The Good Samaritan Fund became apparent. The Good Samaritan Fund provides financial support to residents when they have exhausted

their finances. Many residents that have had to utilize the Good Samaritan Fund never anticipated the need. Most planned for their retirement, but unplanned life events interceded. Fortunately, Canterbury is able to provide them with continued stability and security — and the knowledge that they can stay where they truly feel at home.

Bob became a Good Samaritan recipient and remained in his Canterbury home, with his friends and trusted caregivers, until he passed away at the age of 102.

Every year, the Good Samaritan Fund provides assistance to seniors like Bob. Proceeds from events such as the Golf Outing and Gala support the Good Samaritan Fund. In addition, annual gifts from donors are key to sustaining the Good Samaritan tradition.

Whether you have donated in the past or plan to donate in the future, please know that Canterbury and the residents deeply appreciate your generosity.

The PioneersThe Canterbury Pioneers are residents that have lived at Canterbury since the doors opened in February of 1994. As we celebrate our 20th anniversary in Waterford, we also celebrate these pioneers!

Before there was an actual Canterbury-on-the-Lake building to tour, Bill and Liz Hard and Joe and Dorothy Lanni visited an offsite office that held only a promise of what was to come. In that office, they viewed renderings of floor plans and swatches of material. The vision was enticing enough for both couples to put down their deposits and schedule a move-in date.

Liz and Bill HardBill and Liz moved in on March 2, shortly after Canterbury’s doors officially opened. Bill had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and Liz was also experiencing health challenges of her own. It was important to Liz that they move into a community that offered the full continuum of care. The security of knowing that, should something happen to her, Bill would be cared for was paramount. Liz recovered fully; when Bill sadly passed away six years after they moved in, Liz was extremely grateful to have developed a close network of friends and staff at Canterbury to help her through that difficult time.

Dorothy and Joe LanniJoe and Dorothy Lanni followed in the Hard’s footsteps and moved into Canterbury in April of 1994. Like Bill Hard, Dorothy had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Without any family nearby, they saw the value in Canterbury’s various levels of care all housed under one roof. Joe knew Dorothy would be in good hands should something happen to him.

The “Pioneer” Life at CanterburyLife in 1994 was much different for the residents than it is now. The residents played an active role in the daily running of Canterbury. In the Pub Café, the residents collected money and served sandwiches made by the kitchen staff. They also ran the gift shop and actively planned extracurricular activities for the residents. Liz started the Resident Association, which consisted of six executive members and many different committees. Joe ran the food committee and served as an executive member.

Twenty Years LaterTo this day, Dorothy, Joe and Liz are very active residents. Everyone at Canterbury is so grateful that they chose Canterbury as their home. Without the influence of residents like Joe, Dorothy, Bill and Liz, Canterbury would not be all that it is today.

The Pioneers: Liz Hard, Dorothy and Joe Lanni

5K Fun Walk/RunThe Canterbury 5K Fun Walk/Run was held on September 14, 2013. Fifty-two runners registered for the 5K while 48 residents from our community participated in a shortened race around the perimeter of Canterbury. Dawson Comps finished in first place with a time of 19:45. Ed Haley was the first Canterbury resident to participate in a Canterbury 5K; he finished in just 45 minutes.

The proceeds of $5,700 will benefit our community’s Life Enrichment Program, which provides our residents with positive programming and a nurturing environment including plants, animals, and activities that keep the body, mind and soul active.

A special thank you to our sponsors: Dr. Ray Breitenbach, Best Source Credit Union, Behavioral Care Solutions, Diversified Medical Supply Corp., Dynaflex, Evergreen Home Health Care, Dr. Fadi Salloum, Great Lakes Caring, Green Magic Growers, Home Health Partners, Mercy Home Care and Mercy Hospice, Moving Forward, Residential Hospice, Strategic Partners, Vitas Hospice, Waterford Treasurer - Margaret Birch, and Wyse Guys Printing. Without your support, these events would not be possible.

This year’s 5K event will be May 18. Participants can register now at canterburyonthelake.com

Why should I give to Canterbury? A gift to Canterbury touches the lives of so many people – and in so many different ways. It’s not the amount of your gift that is important; it’s the power of giving. With the generous support of people like you, Canterbury is able to make an immediate impact on our residents and their quality of life. Through steady gifts, one person and

one contribution at a time, Canterbury’s giving program can be more responsive to our residents’ needs.

What is an Annual Gift? Annual Giving is the lifeblood of any non-profit organization. It is the consistent financial support from residents, resident families, friends, and vendors that keeps Canterbury strong. An annual gift is a donation that is utilized in the same year the gift is made. Annual Giving falls into two distinct categories: •Unrestricted gifts support programs that need the most immediate attention. •Restricted gifts support a specific designated area — the Good Samaritan Fund, the Life

Enrichment Program, Pastoral Care Program or the Gardens and Landscaping Fund.

How can I give to Canterbury? There are many options for giving. For the Annual Giving program, you can choose to make one contribution annually — or we can tailor a pledge program that best suits your financial budget, with monthly, quarterly or bi-annual contributions.

Other options include charitable gift annuities as well as bequests from wills or trusts. The Development Department would be happy to meet with you to answer your questions about these exciting giving opportunities.

Remembering Our Matriarch: Jane Windeler LawrenceIn 1954, Jane and her husband, Edmund L. Windeler, purchased the property that Canterbury now calls home. For more than 38 years, the Windelers and their six children lived in a beautiful home on the property.

Jane and Ed had a shared desire that this wonderful setting would be used for seniors when the time came that they would no longer need it. In 1984, Ed Windeler passed away; after his passing, many developers approached Jane about developing the property. Nothing appealed to her until 1990 when Fran McMath, a St. Luke’s Board of Trustee member, contacted Jane with the plans for Canterbury. Jane’s response was “I couldn’t have asked for anything better.” She immediately sold the property to St. Luke’s for a price that was significantly below market value.

After Canterbury was built, Jane actually moved in and called Canterbury home for the remaining years of her life. At various times, she lived in every area of the community and was a very active resident, taking pride in her involvement with many committees, including her position on the Canterbury Board of Directors.

Jane lived life to the fullest—and she lived it here at Canterbury-on-the-Lake. Jane also left a special legacy—one that lets us continue to honor seniors with dignity, respect, and meaning in their lives.

We invite everyone to help make the next 20 years as great, if not better than, the previous 20, in this special place called Canterbury—a place we are proud to call home.

Jane Windeler Lawerence1917-2013

On September 15, 2013, Canterbury-on-the-Lake lost its matriarch—and a truly wonderful woman: Jane Windeler Lawrence. We want to recognize Jane for leaving an important legacy; she will never be forgotten.

The 17th Annual Good Samaritan GalaOn Friday, November 8, 2013, a sold-out crowd enjoyed a wonderful evening of great food provided by Unidine and entertainment by Blackthorne, a Celtic band that sings traditional songs of emigration combined with some of Ireland’s best contemporary songs. Many guests continued the night by participating in the Afterglow party. Dancing, gaming and more fabulous food topped off an already spectacular evening. And, if the evening could not get any better, every guest was given a parting gift of homemade chocolates from our platinum sponsor Great Lakes Caring. Through continued support from residents, family, staff and friends of Canterbury, more than $25,000 was raised for The Good Samaritan Fund. Thank you again to everyone who participated in this wonderful event!

Mark your calendars for the 18th annual gala on September 20. We’ll be celebrating our 20th anniversary in Waterford with aspecialRoaring‘20scelebration.

Golf OutingOn June 20, 2013, the fifth annual Canterbury Good Samaritan Golf Outing was held at Brentwood Golf Course. The weather was perfect for golf: sunny, breezy and beautiful. A helicopter released 700 golf balls onto the fairway at Brentwood. The ball closest to the flag belonged to Irene Santia, who won the $500 first prize.

The Canterbury Team consisting of Ray Emsley (Director of Finance), Nancy Boari (Canterbury Board Member), Cyndi Klucharich (Pavilion Administrator), and Joel Kolodsick (Brightline Technology) won the outing with an amazing score of 62!!

Thank you to the 35 hole sponsors and the many donors of raffle prize items. We would like to recognize our premium sponsors: Allegra Printing and Strategic Partners. The combined support resulted in over $18,000 raised, benefiting the Good Samaritan Fund.

Diane Slupka is a Canterbury employee on a mission.

If there are ways to make life better for the residents who live at Canterbury-on-the-Lake, Diane Slupka will be first in line to help make it happen.

As Canterbury’s Resident Services Director, she works daily to provide programs with a purpose that contribute to the whole person—for each and every Canterbury resident.

“We look at their past lifestyle,” said Diane. “What they did as a career, their hobbies, how involved they are with their families, their

churches…basically, what was it that made up their life and who they are. Did they get up early and work in the garden? Did they work in a shelter? Were they a teacher?

“Then we look at what we offer and make sure we are hitting programs of interest for all walks of life.”

It can be as simple as changing the setup for bingo for a resident who recently had a stroke and would otherwise be unable to play. Or as complex as helping implement an ongoing Campus Care program that’s designed to promote dignity and independence while also helping residents age in place.

Diane was also involved in implementing Canterbury’s extensive wellness program, and residents are enjoying many new activities that enhance their lives socially, physically, and emotionally.

The staff at Canterbury also has weekly interdisciplinary meetings to ensure that everyone throughout Canterbury – including dining, nursing, and therapy – is working together for each individual resident’s benefit. Of course, Diane is always there, her residents’ happiness top of mind.

“These efforts not only support the residents but play a huge role in giving peace of mind to families,” said Diane. “And that’s why we’re here.”

Diane Slupka and many others in the Canterbury community are always looking for ways to enrich the lives of residents, giving them places to go and interesting things to do while living or rehabbing at Canterbury.

Canterbury’s Life Enrichment Fund was created to give individuals the opportunity to contribute to this important mission.

The Life Enrichment Program provides positive programming and a nurturing environment – including plants, animals, and activities – to keep the body, mind, and soul active. Thanks to Canterbury’s supporters, avaiaries and aquariums were recently added—giving residents a new place to visit and a new focal point for their conversations with loved ones. Now, the Activities Department schedules events and learning opportunities around the aviaries and aquarium. In addition, the residents are able to witness the births of the baby birds—and chart their growth.

The Life Enrichment Fund provides the care for the birds, the fish (and the Canterbury cats!). And the residents have grown to love and rely on their new animal friends for companionship.

For more information, or to donate to the Life Enrichment Fund, contact Jen Thamer at 248.674.9292.
